Don't care much for professional athletics though, what a waste of time/money/effort. How can you say that... That is basically what the Olympics are all about... athletics, dexterity, stamina etc. You really don't understand the point of the Olympics do you... Actually I understand it better than you. It's about celebrating athletic ability, determination and belief in yourself whilst also inspiring people to live more active lives and go for their goals. Unfortunately that is undermined by the fact that money buys medals. In the UK the number of gold medals a discipline wins determines the funding that specific field receives in the next Olympics. It's worked brilliantly in increasing our medal tally since we now dominate events that other nations ignore like cycling, rowing; but it kind of sucks if you're a brilliant British gymnast because you'll get no funding compared with the mega bucks America are throwing at it. Huh, that's a shame I didn't know that. I could see that being a problem, but I guess there is no other real way to distribute funds besides evenly across the board which still wouldn't solve the problem. Seems to be like the Rocky vs that Russian dude scenario where he has all the technology and Rocky has nothing but meat and an old dude yelling at you.

I love the fact that NBC (US major cable channel) will be streaming all events LIVE. In the past you had to wait until primetime and watch the tape of the event. This way you can watch any event online, not just the main ones like swimming and track and field. Very nice! Although, Bob Costas can't have that omnipotent Olympic presence anymore ...

Other than money grabbing London fucks and the whole thing being a gigantic waste of money the thing that annoys me about Olympics is there are too many sports where the most elite competitions are actually their world championships and not the Olympics. I think it should be about the best athletes competing regardless of nationality, i.e. if the top 10 fastest 100m runners are all Jamaican and Yanks then so be it. Best example is always football, the Olympic competition is a half arsed attempt at a football tournament. It's no surprise some of these football games will be played half empty stadiums.

400m Individual Medley Medley Relay 100m Sprint Men's Basketball Every other Olympiad event bores me to death, really... I'll sometimes stay and watch random ones like pistol shooting or archery, but events like cycling I really can't. Especially boxing - holy shit - it's like SC2 these days, all drama.

Although some sports I question their existance in the Olympics (basketball), I'm personally excited for this event. Especially since it's that time of year where Korean Americans everywhere just go nuts together. As much flak nationalism gets their is nothing like getting excited for your parents and grandparents culture and homeland.

So track and field events aren't "real sports". What is a "real" sport then cause you definitely did lose me there. Also, how is T&F a waste of time/money/effort? In what sense are any of these activities a waste of time or effort. Should the people competing in them just not bother or something because they aren't worth it? Gonna be honest....I don't have a clue in heck what your point is you are trying to make or why you would feel this way about some of the purest competitions of human strength/speed/endurance. Actually I understand it better than you. It's about celebrating athletic ability, determination and belief in yourself whilst also inspiring people to live more active lives and go for their goals. This explains perfectly why countries like Kenya and Ethiopia dominate the distance events. Oh, wait... IMaybe in sports involving a large degree of technical skill then yes, access to the coaching and top level instruction might be an advantage for successful or wealthier countries. However, when you look at things like T&F or weightlifting or whatever you can't possibly tell me that throwing money at it wins medals. As much as I hate to say it a bunch of money and support isn't going to help someone run 12:55.

I really have to agree with you here, I'm not much of a sports fan in general but I'll watch a game of football, rugby or perhaps even NFL but the running and swimming and stuff just bores the hell out of me. Still, I think the general atmosphere in the city will be good.

But it's a totally different thing if you are saying that it is a total waste of time/money/effort. That just isn't true.
