That said, it always fun to watch on TV.

Cons: I'm in Korea so if I turn on the TV then I'm not gonna get to see any events that Korea sucks at, because they don't bother showing them
Pros: Korea is decent at several of the sports I like, and it's still better than watching in NZ where they show nothing but f***ing swimming the whole time

So we got the Olympia ceremony in Greece, during the country's deepest crisis in recent times.
Then we got the Olympics in the U.K., where we just entered our second recession again, millions of unemployed, businesses shutting down constantly and we are told that this will go on until at least 2015. And our government is now spending astronomical money on this event.
Are you fucking kidding me...? Not even going to bother...

Bad time to live in London. Fuck me it's going to be annoying.
And I can't help but feel we could've spent the 10 billion pounds on something more useful and productive, especially in these times. This event is mostly funded by the public and it's the private corporations who will benefit the most, as usual.

Ah, the Summer Olympics. The time every four years where my high school and college sport of choice matters to more than the people who play it.
I speak of fencing, by the way.

Yeah it is O.O, plus the javelin has such difficult technique to master.

It's really hard to imagine someone throwing farther than that, at least with the new javelin.

I love (and am saddened by) the fact that this could apply to quite a large number of the Olympic events including things like T&F, weightlifting, Badminton, etc.

Don't care much for professional athletics though, what a waste of time/money/effort. How can you say that... That is basically what the Olympics are all about... athletics, dexterity, stamina etc. You really don't understand the point of the Olympics do you... Actually I understand it better than you. It's about celebrating athletic ability, determination and belief in yourself whilst also inspiring people to live more active lives and go for their goals. Unfortunately that is undermined by the fact that money buys medals.
In the UK the number of gold medals a discipline wins determines the funding that specific field receives in the next Olympics. It's worked brilliantly in increasing our medal tally since we now dominate events that other nations ignore like cycling, rowing; but it kind of sucks if you're a brilliant British gymnast because you'll get no funding compared with the mega bucks America are throwing at it.
