I follow tennis enough to know no one remembers single Grand Slam winners opposed to Golden Medal tennis players. That's so wrong. Everyone remembers Wimbledon winners. Every British Tennis player would give their left arm to have their name on that famous plaque alongside all the greats of Tennis. They still talk about Fred Perry in England today, he will be talked about every time Wimbledon comes round again. "of course we haven't won since the great Fred Perry in 1936." The fact that Wimbledon is such a jinx for British tennis players would make it even more incredible if Murray won.

I remember who won grand Slams four year ago but I have no clue who won the olympics in Beyjing. The fact that the olympic tournament was held in Wimbledon made it a little bit more interesting this year so that the best players actually came but I do not think we will see the same in Rio.

Slam is vastly more important to tennis players. It's not even close...

In a grand slam you get more money for making it to the second round as you get winning the golden medal.
Source1: List of gold medal earnings
Source2: Prize pool distribution AO
Winners get approx. 90times more money. That's all there is to say.
|
To be honest money has nothing to do with it.
Wimbledon> Other Slams> Other major tournaments such as the olympics. Atleast that is how it is perceived over here. Is Wimbledon the most prestigious tournament for foreigners still? I am with the people who want rid of tennis, football, basketball in the games. If it isnt the pinnacle of the sport it shouldnt be in, that is what the olympics represent.
|
I think they should shorter versions of the sport. Like a 7aSide footie tournament with rolling subs would be good. I REALLY like the addition of Rugby 7s at Rio. Look forward to that, trust me it's a really fun game.

The former Fulham and Liverpool manager admitted he was not impressed by the atmosphere at Villa Park when Manchester City and Chelsea met in the Community Shield on Sunday, in comparison to what occurred in stadiums at London 2012.
Hodgson said: "I wouldn't mind a spotlight also focused on the crowd because I think one of the things that made the Olympic Games for Great Britain was the incredible support within the stadia where the events took place.
"Maybe we need to start looking not only on the field and off the field after the match, but maybe in the stadia itself.

Yeah lets remove Olympic football so we get more boring club football!

Lol those people who think Murray wouldn't trade his gold medal for a Wimbledon title obviously don't follow tennis.

I think that's more than a bit presumptuous to just assume someone would give up an Olympic medal for anything. You don't know. Maybe he would, maybe he wouldn't. An Olympic medal is about as prestigious, rare, and renowned an achievement as can be.
More people watch Olympic tennis than watch Wimbledon, for obvious reasons.
|
I really don't think it's much of a presumption honestly, at least when it comes to Andy Murray and Wimbledon.
|
This is like asking a Lebron if he would trade his NBA championship for a gold medal.
Olympics have always been a sideshow for professional sports. I don't even remember who won the tennis gold medal in Beijing. It's only important for Andy Murray because he's never won anything signifiant before, and it's a coincidence the Olympics were held at Wimbledon.

Not only that but the competition for wimbledon and other majors is pretty fierce. Every single round is bo5, and there's more rounds and more players. It's just a harder tournament to win. In the olympics tennis is a sideshow, at wimbledon it's the main event and the whole country is gonna have its eyes on you.

Uh, maybe the olympics overall.... but certainly not the tennis.

Not a fucking chance more people watched the olympic tennis than Wimbledon.

Key word US, less than 8m audience whereas in GB alone the Wimbledon final was watched by 17m. Olympic final was 10.7m.
