Chinese is a little different, since it typically uses particles or word order to specify case but means that non-native English speakers can run into the same problem.

As usual, Yango with knowledge bombs.

English is a hard, non-intuitive language.

What to do for a 4k post though, coming mighty close.

idk, everything I've heard from multilinguals is that English is stupid easy. Little conjugation to remember and not having to remember genders for objects that can be the opposite of your native language.

Indeed, English is quite easy and very widespread so it's hard not to learn it, doesn't mean people won't make mistakes while speaking/writing it obviously but it is easy to get understood. French and Chinese on the other hand ...

Really though we should all be learning Esperanto anyways, and then tell people we know Esperanto at every possible moment.

In fact we should turn the entire subforum into Esperanto to ward off those awful newcomers

English is hard? y'all smoking dat good weed.

I speak English as a second language here and i take nothing but honors and ap after living in the state for a year. It flows easy, and honestly rules and exceptions are easy as balls to pick up, because, chances are if it doesn't sound or look right, it's an exception. A little bit of me dies everytime someone write "dieing". Fucking serious? You can't see anything wrong at all with how that word is spelled?

At leash any Asian languages would kick its ass anyday in any way you can think of, easy.

Well I believe that English is a rather easy language compared to Finnish which I still feel is significantly more difficult even though it's my native language. Japanese's easier than both apart from the letters but those are a pain in the ass and imo brings it over English in difficulty. Swedish is the easiest out of these 4 languages, it makes a lot of sense and many things are pretty straight-forward and logical. Don't have a whole lot of knowledge about other languages. So out of the languages I know

Finnish >>>>> Japanese > English >> Swedish in difficulty. Japanese and English swap places for spoken.

English is easy to manipulate too, just add "the courage" to any sentence to make it sound better than it is.

The courage to lie to your spouse.
The courage to betray your comrades
The courage to be a pervert
The courage to hate someone

East Asian languages are often viewed as "hard" by Westerners because of the writing system. English is considered hard because the grammar and spelling can be unintuitive compared to the relatively simpler sentence structures like say, Chinese. Generally speaking, stuff with lots of conjugations and word gender will be more difficult and complex. You can't lump all "Asian" languages together since some are naturally more complex than others. Chinese, for example, has very simple grammar and no gender. Japanese, on the other hand, has to worry about gender of speaker, social rank, etc...

Also, proper English is different enough from colloquial English that it's honestly a lot more complex than you'd think.

IIRC lit is not a grammar/structure course, and composition probably isn't either.

American is easy to pick up because it's like 3rd grade English and you can have dozens of grammatical errors and still be understood fine. Chicago in particular is known for ending sentences with prepositions, which actually just throws shit for a loop in proper English but no one bats an eye because fuck it, you got your point across.

Not ending sentences in prepositions is a holdover from Latin grammar. And there it makes lots of sense because your sentence would be fucking gibberish if you ended in a preposition. Applied to modern day English it is a dumbfounding rule, and should serve as a tiny illustration of why 'correct' English is a hilariously difficult language to learn and why most speakers (natives in particular) do not.

E: Latin really sucks fyi.
