I think we can all agree the PvE strategy is the optimal game-winning strategy right now for its combination of high consistency due to its low reliance on snowballing off kills. I might do a writeup/analysis later on but for now I'd like to dredge up something I wrote a while ago that's pretty similar.

Dissecting M5's play

We've seen M5 dominate Kiev and really put on a show at Hannover, but what exactly makes them tick?

Many have described / observed M5 as being:

-super aggressive
-partial to counterjungling
-excellent at executing teamfights

I don't disagree with the above, but I feel that at the core of their play is the pre-game decisions that they make as team, with respect to picks/bans and itemization.

M5 bans

M5 typically bans champions that punish over-aggression (Karthus, Shen, Rammus) and in one specific example, champions that heavily influence teamfights (Cassiopeia). This allows them to play the way they are comfortable with.

M5 picks

M5 typically picks champions with a strong late-game / heavy teamfight capabilities. This is perhaps THE best way to draft in League of Legends, as unlike the other game *cough* DotA*cough*, champions with strong late-game in LoL do not get a weak early-game as a counterbalance (think Ryze, Shyvanna). In addition, drafting champions with good teamfight prowess allows for comebacks in the event that the laning phase does not go too well in their favor.

M5's play

M5 as a team applies high pressure throughout the whole map, not unlike the optimal Dominion strategy. What this means is M5 typically pushes out all three lanes, if possible, freeing up time for extra movement around the enemy jungle / recalling to buy. This also restricts the enemies' movements in addition to lowering their CS when the turret inevitably steals some last hits. While this might sound dangerous, when executed as a team it really puts a lot of stress on the lanes which a lone jungler is unable to relieve. The opposing jungler is torn between helping multiple lanes out and protecting his own creeps from invasion.

M5's itemization

What I found highly interesting / enlightening was M5's itemization, something which I think is instrumental to their success in most teamfights. M5's jungler, Diamondez almost always gets Aegis, which is obviously a super efficient item during teamfights where everyone stands to benefit from the aura. GoSu Pepper typically starts Faerie Charm into Heart of Gold, forgoing Philo Stone's sustain for the additional health buffer which is typically useful only for teamfights. In addition, GoSu Pepper goes for Zeke's Herald in a lot of games, even ones where M5 goes double AP. Where most teams spend their support gold on Philo Stone -> Shurelya's, M5's support gold is spent on Zeke's Herald which provides actual combat benefits.

An extreme example of M5's itemizing for teamfights/lategame is Dar1en, who often forgoes WARDS and makes up for his lack of vision by playing push-out+recall/invade (the need for wards to counter lane ganks is significantly lowered when you aren't in lane).

EDIT:
Changelog: Changed title from Breaking down M5's play to Dissecting M5's play because dissecting is a cool word.

M5's playstyle at that time was unpopular and against the accepted 'freeze/control lanes' playstyle, but I think it's pretty clear the push style when conducted as a team is a whole lot more effective. Blaze mixes it up really well by freezing 1 lane sometimes and basically just allocating their presence around the map really well.

Should Frost have picked Anivia instead? They were hovering over it, and it seemed like a good pick. Feels like a better pause champion than Xerath. Anivia / Shen play like CLG Eu. That is, their overall strategy didn't fail, but they just didn't get ahead like they wanted. Might just be my personal preference for Anivia coming into play though.
