I'm surprised that shits like this still happens after the Savior scandal. Are the players simply ignorant of it or do they honestly believed that they could get away with it?

With millions and millions of dollars on the line in season 2 and 3....I am very very skeptical about the "integrity" of future LoL matches.

It's a possibility that Savior and other players have shown before. Honestly the players have to keep the spirit of the competition on their minds and do the right thing, but before Season 3 even starts we have this stupid mess. The fact it even happened is now up to MLG/Riot to decide if they need to set an example for their future. It's just something stupid they've done and I frankly won't follow Dig/Curse in their future tournaments, because they gave up their chance at first place and didn't show their spirit to win legitimately

It's not only eSports. There was the big scandal involving pro tennis a couple of years ago too. Collusion and match fixing can happen almost anywhere. The only thing you can hope to do is have harsh enough penalties to dissuade people from doing it and instill enough pride in the competitors to always give it their best.

edit: Also, that thread on the LoL forums that was linked is the dumbest shit I've ever read. Holy fuck, now I know why people think elo hell exists.

There is no way the penalties MLG handed were enough.

Do you think 0$, no points, and the public shaming wont be bad? Do you think their managers wont absolutely tear into their assholes for making them look like shit and embarrassing their sponsors? I personally would have no problem with further punishments that could include either a % of purse being taken if they place at nationals or complete removal from nationals. It would weaken the tournament, but would send a huuuuge message.

If riot banned an Elohell member from playing in a tournament because he got tribunal banned, they are going to unleash a shit storm at Dig and Crs for this incident. If Riot does not, I can't see how I can take any tournament that Dig and Crs is participating in seriously anymore.

They're not really the same thing.

I dunno if Riot will go a step further, but I'd be in favor of it. Cheating is pretty much the absolute #1 worst thing you can pull.

It's a gaming culture thing. A loooot of smaller tournaments have splitting occur on a daily/weekly basis. I'm not just talking about the LoL scene. Every competitive scene I've been a part of had splitting that was really common. People just have to understand that they're not just athletes anymore; they're also entertainers. That means putting on a legitimate show for their fans and paying customers on/offline regardless of whether they really care about the match they're about to participate in.

Random addendum: I'm glad MLG is giving out all of the cash to the lower placed teams. Some of them could legitimately used the influx of $$$ and while I don't always love the idea of subsidies, I'm ok with it in this case. Granted, they were probably legally obligated to pay it all out is my hunch.

well I wont be supporting the players or the teams anymore I would like to see them banned from future tournaments, both as teams and individuals. If my team asked me to throw the match I would have just not went on stage if they went through with it. I've been in similar situations where we played the last match of a tournament very tired from a long round robin for a match between 7th and 8th with no money on the line. But both teams played it out to win because its the competitive nature of being in a sport, and people came to watch and actually paid to watch. If I paid for this shit scandal I would be seriously pissed.

Can someone tell me how this affects the final circuit standings? I've been looking everywhere for a breakdown of how many points were to be awarded for each place with no luck.

As someone pointed out before, this type of stuff happens in all sports and not just eSports. In fact it's even more prominent in regular sports - there are many scandals involving athletes getting free As in college classes and not having to even take tests, because the school really wanted a certain player on their team.

Not saying it's excusable, just saying this occurrence is not exclusive to eSports let alone League of Legends.

It's not just gaming culture... It's anything with decent money. Ever hear of Men Nguyen and his "poker teams"? The Russian pros? Hell, I was involved in some mild collusion with my "team" as well and I'm sure plenty of other college kids are/were.

The Circuit Points that would normally be awarded to 3rd-8th place will be awarded as normal. Curse and Dignitas will not receive their Points however, and they will not be given to any one else either.

At the end of the day, Dignitas and Curse remain as 3rd and 4th Seeds respectively in NA for now. The only changes are to the lower Seeds.

Anyone have the possible NA regional seeding if this result went through as planned (Crs over DIg)?

There's a rumor going around...I want to see if it could be possible.

No. Dignitas and Curse pre-MLG were 860 and 515 Points respectively. 1st place gets 400, second place gets 200. So no matter who won, would not have changed seeding in that respect. Just Prize Money.

The only difference is that a win for Dignitas allows them to surpass CLG by about 100 Points and move to Second Seed. But they both stay on the opposite side of the bracket from Curse and TSM. So yeah. No big difference there either. Only changes Round 1 matches since Dignitas and CLG will still face off in Round 2 if they advance from Round 1.

Wow, that's an over reaction. Dig and Crs's motives were entirely clear, they cared more about S2 finals than this tournament. It's completely ridiculous to over generalize what occurred here. Would they pull this kind of stuff at regionals or s2 finals? hell no. Maybe they fucked up, but its not their fault that there wasn't enough incentive at this competition, or rather, there was enough incentive not to play 100% (Far more important to have every edge they can going into regionals and s2 finals).

But heres the thing, almost every real sport doesn't actually use a tournament format like this because it doesn't make sense as far as growing the game and the sport is concerned. Prize splitting isn't an issue in say Hockey/Soccer/Football/Basketball because people get paid a salary that is the same regardless of whether they 1st or last. They dont compete for money, they compete for pride.

Just because two teams are splitting money how does that mean they dont care about whether they have #1 or #2 beside their name? How does them getting paid regardless mean they wont try their hardest to win? How does allowing more people to make a living/devote more time into the game kill the competitve spirit/competition?

If anything I'd say it allows players to get better at the game and increase competition... but I guess that just me...

lol

How is it anyone's fault but their own? They clearly didn't need to attend this tournament to qualify for the later tournaments. They chose to come and chose to cheat. That's on them and them alone.

The rumor was that Dig threw so they wouldn't have to face Legion in NA qualifiers. Seems like that it might be plausible.

(It doesn't help that casters were commenting consistently about Dig's problems against Legion).

Dignitas and Curse chose to go to MLG. No one forced them to go. They could have pulled out; By willingly going to MLG, they don't have any excuse about motivation. If they're that concerned about being watched in the Finals, then just play super safe and standard, or play super experimental and janky to not show anything. It's not like TSM and CLG aren't going to watch every other game they played in.

@Moonbear, Yeah, they could have pulled out, and thats a fair point... but ther ewas something to play for, the seeds could have changed... up until the finals, at which point they were just playing for the difference in cash between 3rd and fourth. Personally, I think they were retarded not to play hard and go for the extra cash, I was just taking issue with the guy saying he cant take any tournament they will be in seriously...
