IMO top tower > dragon every time. Wat. Support gold is the most valuable gold in the game. It is exactly why dragons, turrets and barons are worth so much to a team. Everytime i play support, as long as I don't die with oracles, I'll always have enough to continuously ward the entire map. Ofc Aegis is useful, but EUs put in on the jungler/top lane a lot of the time so.......
You have to consider that pro games generally don't have a lot of kills, so not a lot of assists for gold

You can't possibly have enough to buy both items and wards.
Without HoG/Philo you will be behind in gold late game and behind in stats in lane. If you don't buy any items, you will get destroyed in teamfights.

Re Support Gold: Notice that Taric didn't buy boots until 23 min into this game while Janna had boots and has components for an Aegis. That's what global gold does for you.
Fnatic top tower dies to minions as Nasus pushes. He has Trinity now.

Leesin cannot handle nasus and he takes top turret.

Also, Wickd has been free farming top forever. This will be a scary Nasus. Then again, Wall of Pain, Janna ulti, Gragas ulti, Lee Sin ulti--they can keep Nasus at a distance.

Fnaic perfect timing on Baron, Lee Sin even launching his Q knowing it would hit. SK come in late after Dragon dies and gets caught by Gragas ult. WW and Cait trade for Karthus. Fnatic takes mid inner turret for free.

Nyph walks into warded area. Karthus wall, Urgot swap, byebye.
Fnatic goes top lane and throws everything at SK there. They lose Gragas and Karthus but kill Cassi, WW, Nasus and the top inner tower.
