I mean this is cool cause it will bring more people intro playing these games but outside of normal league and sc2 I have no desire to pick up any new games, certainly not mobile ones

really like what they want to do with TFT, seem pretty nice and good for long gameplay.
Card game could be also nice.

Ok maybe this sounds really spoiled but with the lead up adds and promotion, Riot even sent me an email asking me to watch. I was really disappointed there was nothing to buy or play or watch immediately following the presentation, I get this is very 2019 of me and I have been spoiled by Nintendo directs probably.
I especially dislike the watching streams increases your odds of getting beta for the card game if I cannot play it I have 0 interest in watching it.

Nothing for 10 years and then like 7 games at once.
Maybe not all top games but this is certainly ambitious. I have a feeling it would be better for them to use resources on fewer projects, but it is not like I know their resources.
Personally I am only interested in the RPG game. Well and maybe one of these will create another viable esport. I am sure Riot will have this in mind given their experience with League.

Wait, is it actually hard to get into the LoR alpha? In the stream, they made it sound like it would be very exclusive but I managed to get an invite yesterday. For reference, the last time I logged into my main LoL account was 3+ years ago so I figured I wouldn't have a good chance of getting in. Was I simply just a lucky SOB?

For those that want access to the Legends of Runeterra alpha, you can drastically increase your chances of getting it by using Twitch.
Steps: 1. Go to www.playruneterra.com and click on the "Pre-Register To Play" button and sign-in. 2. On Twitch, login to your Twitch account and link it to your LoL account, if it's not already done. 3. Tune in to any of the Twitch channels that are playing LoR says that they have the drops enabled. 4. Let the stream run in the background until you (hopefully) get the access drop. Make sure to check on it once in a while since the streamer might decide to end the stream or host another streamer (which I don't think enables the drop).
I'm pretty sure this was how I got my alpha access, I just tuned in to Imaqtpie's stream while he was playing LoR thinking that the "drops enabled" meant that it would give me an in-game lootbox or something, then an hour later, got the email.
Now's a good time to do it since some select streams advertises that they have a bonus 5x chance to get the access if you watch the stream.

Pretty impressed by the card game from what I have seen. And it seems Riot is very generous with the cards. There is apparently very little pressure to spend money. Although I am sure Riot will therefore make much, much less from that game than Blizz from HS.
|
Keep in mind that this is only the "Preview Patch" and if Riot/Tencent see that their data shows that the game does not make enough money, they can makes changes to rectify the situation (e.g. reduce amount of shards, wildcards, etc.) Pretty sure none of what we saw in this beta in terms of amount of card drops/XP is set in stone and we've seen other card games (like M:tG Arena) adjust their monetization schemes following their release and very positive reception by making it harder to grind out free cards, much to the dismay of their player base.

I mean you'd want people to play with the strong cards in a beta. Helps you catch users and also test stuff out.

Nevermind the numbers on shards or cards whatever, the system is just fundamentally different. They would have to go full 180 to get into HS territory.
What really fuels sales is always the randomness of packs / loot boxes. If you dont have that you will not be close with monetization.

Speaking of which, they unlocked all the cards for the last day so that we could play around with all possible decks. The Preview Patch alpha ends in a couple hours, at 02:00 GMT (+00:00).

"the League of Legends team (including marketing) has accounted for under 20% of Riot’s total headcount"
I thought that number is interesting. I dont think anyone suspected they put this much into other things, at least before the recent announcements.

Does that include Esports though? Or is that considered a separate endeavour?

Or is that considered a separate endeavour? Seperate, just as music. I guess it includes graphic artists and customer support, not sure though. Tbh overall pretty hard to say how many are then allocated to the other games, that would be the more interesting number.

The next LoR preview patch is in less than 24 hours and there will be more invites this time around so you should have better chances of getting in. It will add the Expeditions mode, which is their take on the Arena mode. https://playruneterra.com/en-us/news/expeditions-preview-patch-faq
I'm interested to see how it will play out since it seems they have taken steps to reduce RNG (e.g. synergy picks). The shard cost to get into an Expeditions run seems pretty high, though; guess they want to incentivize coin purchases this way.
Also, for those that are not aware, I've created a LoR thread on the TL.net forum a while back. https://tl.net/forum/games/552055-legends-of-runeterra. I assumed that this was the most appropriate place to discuss the game since LoR is in a standalone game separate from the League client.

The faq says if you had access for the first preview you will still have it for the next one. Nice.
