You realize that's how all team sports work, right? Ask any football, American football, hockey, basketball, baseball, cricket... You name it. You propose that player's get the rights to the spot? How exactly would that work? I mean, great in theory, but it's kind impossible to make work.

Player's unions with guaranteed contracts and CBA's and whatnot help smooth those issues out though. eSports has some growing pains it's still got to go through before it matches its 'professionalism' with its viewerbase and advertisement potential.

Just like real sports! (except without a player union) Real sports were incredibly shitty to their players without player unions. The fact that players can leave for greener pastures at all is a really good thing and allows avenues for players to not be exploited nearly as bad. Basically, if professional teams who own spots can't keep players they will have to pay players more until they can (absent collusion)

But yes "real" sports are based on the franchise. but they also have players unions, and guaranteed minimum contracts, trades, more than 5 man teams. ect. also most franchise based sports have leagues with 30+ teams. not 8-10. so if player is mistreated by team A they have tons of options if they aren't just terrible players and can be traded away. many things that allow a healthy environment for players are explicitly prohibited by riot or avoided due to the way those contracts function. players get most of their income from non-team salary as well. Not to mention how individual player sponsorships/endorsements are discouraged by riot and its LCS sponsors getting to use your image for free. To be fair most professional sports leagues have been around for decades with some nearing the century mark. They had time to grow to those 30+ slots. I can see esports growing to that level in time.

Monte seems to think big companies in the west will start investing in esports next year, given how much buzz S4WC caused.
