apparently. It's been picked and banned away several times in EU LCS. I just tried it and it's not bad. Went against an Aatrox, kinda lost my lane but was more relevant in teamfights since he tanks and peels like a boss. Your ult also gives your ad carry more wiggle room with their positioning.

mao was always a good solo laner, the rework didnt change much except bring attention to him. albeit he is less fun and more "LCS'd" as I like to put it as the superior build is now full tank.

Not true, back in s2 (I think) they disabled leveling w first. TECHNICALITIES.

He was the same before unless you ran around a bunch (which happened less because burst wasn't as weak as now and mobility wasn't as prevalent), it's just that with the recent changes making it harder to tank shit his ult makes itself felt more, and because ADs are so damn strong atm having a frontline dude capable of holding for a bit longer while your Tristana 4-shots everyhting has more value than 2 patches ago.

Same reason Nautilus can actualy be useful now, more than the golem changes.
Cant take LMS hipsters serious.

eh. the recent patches also gave him a bunch of mana buffs which lets him compete with the other top laners. Even post-patch he can still go oom pretty fast if you spam too hard.

before, Maokai was usually laned mid where he could get blue buff to cover his mana issues early on before he gets a big mana item.

Mid lane Maokai usually also built a crapton of AP early on and maxed Sapling Toss, his most expensive spell, first. In the offlne you max Q for more harass, the slow's utility, etc. and because you don't necessarily want to push as hard and aren't as threatened by ranged champions.
Cant take LMS hipsters serious.

The fact the ult centers on him and follows him around means that in longer engagements you aren't limited to fighting in his old ring, even if said ring was larger.

Tried maokai top. Was against a lulu, and the matchup is surprisingly tolerable. Passive sustain really punishes any help pix>glitter combos and it's really easy to force her to choose between Q'ing wave, and q'ing you because Q is such good wave clear. Might need a negatron before finishing the roa, but after that point it's smooth sailing. The ult is pretty ridiculous as well, lategame when I'm pushing 4.5k hp fully potted up, pretty consistently saw 1k+ damage blocks, and you deal non-negligible damage even lategame.

The new ultimate is ridiculously strong. Fairly easy to keep at least 2 others in range of it, and maokai's kit punishes diving so incredibly hard.

His E also is invaluable for checking baron from really long range. Basically impossible to bait it when the maokai is too tanky to engage on even if you can break banshees+catch, and everybody else is sitting behind him.

That's true, but my point is that the last time he was popular it was also simply harder to fight out of the ring if you played against a decent Maokai because there was less mobility in the game and the fights were shorter (or, more precisely, actually got people killed (usually through burst though) instead of slapping each other, spamming heals/exhaust/shields, then each team runs back to its corner).

Obviously now unless you're playing the artillery piece style with Ziggs (and then you deserve to be gifted headphones playing Lux's laugh on repeat) or Kog, you won't do much with an immobile ult because one team tries to initiate, the other one counter initiates then runs away, then everyone scatters, then the loser gets chased.

In today's edition of "shit boot enchantments fuck up", Alacrity Merc treds apparently give 0 tenacity. Not sure about other enchantments.
