Runes:
I've been pretty lazy with my runes this season. Still ,some guidelines...
- Mana regen. You want it, at the very least 2.0, Gleeb was running 3+ (though it was his nami page). You can't really exchange these, the so called presence of yours is measured by your shields and qs, whther they are used agressively or defensively.
- health yellows, armor quints. Aka basic bot stuff
- I use armor reds, but I've seen Jannas running mpen or flat attack damage. The latter makes you fucking annoying in lane with your shield aa harass, the former I do not like, unless you are maxin w, which you should not do if you are just picking up her.
- ap quints and scaling ap glyphs are a viable choice too. The scaling on her shield (both the shield and the bonus atk dmg part) is nuts.
- Janna goes 21 in utility and seemingly buys items with additional extra movement speed, so movement speed quints might seem reasonable too, but they are not.
- A full gp/10 rune page is awesome if you can get away with it. Janna scales extremely well with items.
Mastery:
Standard 9-21, though I'm running 5-25 taking everything in utility but phasewalker, scout, runic affinity, vampirism and inspiration.
Items:
- Start with coin, unless it's a lane where your hp bar is in danger (vs Leona ,Blitzcrank or shenanigans like pantheon or rengar), then you can start with a ruby crystal, howewer I'd strongly advise getting coin vs blitz too. If you are pulled you are fucked anyway. Starting with knife was ok too, but after the nerf to it, and the buff to coin, I see only a a very few reasons to start with it. You will always get talisman eventually on Janna. Always. Saying it twice just to be sure!
- It's not really a Janna thing but don't upgrade your sightstone to ruby sightstone. If you like wasting money, I can pm you which credit card you should transfer your money to.
- Mikael's is too good to pass up, usually a good second item. Start with the idol, unless the game is insanely passive or you do not plan on finishing mikael right away.
- Don't buy ionian boots unless you are really behind, and you don't want to be useless in teamfights. Mobi boots with 21 utility and with your w passive and with your innate passive is just ridiculously good, but always consider buying tabis or mercury. Janna is the support who can be everywhere on the map without mobis too. Usually captain enchantment is the way to go, but there are games when you absolutely need distrotion to reposition yourself with flash for ult. It's usually needed with assasins, because in a matter of seconds your adc can be chased far away from you.
- If the enemy has jax, or irelia, or yi, or trynd consider buying frozen heart. If they have at least two melee aa-based bruisers then don't just consider it, buy it.
- If you don't want Mikael as your second item, ardent censer is an amazing buy too, unless your adc is shit.
- Enemy ap carry fed; amumu or fiddle is jungling, etc. --> aegis. This is a good second buy as well.
- Get Twin Shadows early if they have an akali. Grab it anyway if your team lacks initiation, or the opponent has annoying melee aa based bruisers.
- Meijai is a great item if you learn to be safe. Usually, every death as Janna means you fucked up something hard, unless it's a game where you constantly have to flash into the middle of the enemy team, but even then you should be able to escape with talisman, shield, q-ing them up while leaving your w active.
Usual build vs a team comp (melee-, assasiny oriented) comp you shit on:
1. SS 2. Talisman 3. Tabi/Mobility 4.Frozen Heart 5. Mikael 6. Ardent - if mikaels passive is really needed, get it before frozen heart. It usually is, so just buy glacial shroud (armor and cd for you), then finish mikael.
Usual build vs more balanced team comp:
1. SS 2. Talisman 3. Mercury/Mobility 4. Aegis (locket after mikael) 5. Mikael 6. Ardent - again, Mikael can come earlier
Usual build if you are #winning
1.SS 2. Talisman 3. Mobility 4. Ardent (or Meijai) 5. Death Cap 6. Mikael, or a bf sword to disrespect. // 1. SS. 2. Talisman
3. Mobility 4. Ardent 5. Mikael 6. Frozen Heart/Locket (this is a more conservative winning build, but getting meijai or death cap is not trolly at all, ap is insanely good on support J)
- Buy a qss if you are against Malzahar. Not only because he can ult you, but you might be cc-d when you should flash q or flash r him from his ult. Oh yes, another isntance where you want distortion enchantment.
- Aside from twin shadows, vs akali or khazix upgrade sweeping lens into oracle's lens ASAP, priority over everything after Talisman. You can still buy a vision ward for skirmishes, but oracle should be more than enough.
Other notes:
- Always get exhaust, unless they have volibear support. Don't bring it if they have swain or voli top, just convince your ap to buy morellos, or buy it yourself, no biggie. You will absolutely need exhaust, it's the ultimate shutdown, and your only tool vs a fed vi or fizz. You can't stop those guys, only after they burned everything.
- It's ok to get scrying orb later on, matches are lost because there's comes a point when there are no wards at baron (it's not necessarily your fault, it could have a number of reasons), and then you either facecheck into a trap or give them free baron. Tbh it's not the support that should pick it up, but hey, it's solo queue.
- If you start playing with her in normals flash ult the enemy whenever you think "would it work?". Don't second guess yourself, you will probably die anyway, but you can't start practicing it soon enough! .D
- Stay. with. your. adc. Whenever you lose a 5v5, it's because you did something else. It's not true of course, there games where you have to play differently, but for first, always stay with your adc, even if hes shit. Unless hes vayne, fuck him then. Jk, help him too.
- Do not have more than 3 active items or vision ward in your inventory. My experience is that the more active items you have, the less efficently you will use them. You should draw the line, even though stuff like randuin (did not write about it, I know), twin shadows, qss are viable and sometimes needed, you either mash your keyboard in panic, or forget at least one of them, or fail to see one of your abilities came off cooldown. Don't forget, you will almost always have talisman and mikael, which is 2 out of the 3. That's why I like ardent, if you naturally struggle with activated items (ie have troubles even using the 1 you have) Ardent is an amazing purchease.
- Don't forget your passive!! Often just walking behind your teammate who is chasing soeone is enough for him to be able to catch up. Do not ever underestimate that 5%. remember, 3 movespeed glyphs adds 4.5% mov speed, so either everyone who uses them are stupid, or 5% is fucking good.

I really don't understand why you would start coin over frostfang.Coin gives you literally nothing for the same cost.Sure it builds into a more useful item but why would you limit your early laning so much.Much better to start with ff and sell it later.
Also don't always get exhaust.Look at both teams first.That should be common sense.

On Janna, always get exhaust. There could be a very little asterix for the likes of soraka, but janna is nothing like nami, where your opponents will sit under turret with 20% hp. If you are the type of guy who always bring ignite to bot as a support, then by all means, exhaust is still superior on Janna. That being said I won with CV Leona too, so yeah.
Frostfang is not "so much better", especially since the nerfs. It's upside was the $$$s and the better early game damage, but after this patch I don't see how can you argue about it. Frost queens active is shit, especially for Janna who already has 2 abilities to disengage and 2 abilities to catch someone. Talisman also good at two things, engaging and disengaging. cdr is the same, and it will be maxed out anyway with your choice of items, and if you want ap just buy mejai or deathcap. Spellthief is especially shit vs the likes of nami, lulu or sona, where it's way too dangerous and ineffective to utilize the goldstealing passive.
Edit: one thing I completely forgot is the cdr reduction on talisman. I've been already accustomed to having 20000% cdr (rough estimate) from support items. Ionian is still be just an emergency buy imo, but will see.
