I mean even buying the Frozen Heart, it gives you 400 mana, considering that a single QW combo costs 120 and your ult drains 30 per second, it means when you'd get oom, you get an additional QW combo and can maintain your ult to wait for it (~6s so 300 mana total). Later in the game, throwing an additional sapling is enough to offset the rest.
One thing to take out of this is that despite people saying Maokai has good damage because of Sapling Toss' base, he has to refrain from using it because the spell offers to little for its cost (especially compared to the rest, since it only gives damage but it's hard to get the explosion on the key enemies and Q has a decent base for half the cd already, then you add its cc), which is part of why his damage is so low. Sapling Toss really doesn't bring much apart from scouting later in the game, sadly.
Also it's hard to get FH early now, as when I played a bit of Mao before the patch you could get Golem -> boots -> Locket and be set HP-wise, with 550 HP + the shield (something like 150+ at that point), then rush FH.
Now the new passive incites you to build some more HP before you move on to resistances, to make up for the 150 HP you lose (although if Golem works on itself then you only lose 100 HP compared to before I guess, so a Belt or 2 ruby would more or less make up for it?). Anyway, I wouldn't feel as comfortable going the same build (unless I go kindlegem after boots for the generic HP over the negatron).

I know mikael's is generally considered a shit item now but wouldn't that go pretty well with maokai's tank/peel role while providing him with enough mana for years?

mikaels still really good, just not first buy after sightstone. I can't believe they made it so fucking expensive though, really wish they just gave other support items the low gold costs, rather than make mikaels so expensive.

Crucible costs basically 800 more gold for 10% CDR (mp5 is ignorable because between chalice's own mp5 and mana font Riot managed to find the worst stat to slap on it). You'd think "well that a kindlegem a bit worse", but take it this way: Crucible's price was increased by 50% in exchange for 10% CDR. That's expensive as balls and while the item was already slot-ineffective and cost-ineffective, they made it barely more slot-effective while utterly destroying its slot effectiveness. You pay 1600 for 10% CDR and the active. You pay its previous price for the active, basically, and you happen to have a chalice lying in your inventory.
It's still good but it's not about the item itself, it's about the timing. It's considerably delayed unless you want to hurt your midgame (1600 gold is basically enough to get the active from your gold item, and they give you real stats/improvements for the cost too). Like Flare wasn't nerfed that much on paper, but because of how it delays your timing by 5 camps, so 2-3 minutes at best, which so happens to be right at the time you'd want to group and fight in pub games, making you have to choose between fighting with a weak item, or losing even more map presence and relinquishing the initiative to the enemy team, so that you can get stonger. Happening right as you start grouping it means a lot in terms of tempo/map control.

And Blitz has an always on Swain ult, and Cho has either Twitch or Eve stealth can't tell which yet. Edit: Apparently Akali bubble, didn't see the bubble circle a few times though, some visuals look crazy bugged.
