I have never played a non gen1 pokemon game before. Should I play Emerald, or stick to the safe and tested Fire Red. (My only two choices. Wish I could make a poll on this damn phone.) HALP I'm going to guess there will be a lot of people who will go "NOSTALGIA FIRE RED" but seriously what's going to happen is you're going to go all nostalgic and remember the good old days and then suddenly "WTF MAGNEMITE IS STEEL TYPE NOW WHAT THE FUCK DO I USE TO KILL HIM" "WHAT DO YOU MEAN WEEZING ISN'T WEAK AGAINST GROUND MOVES ANYMORE" "WHY DOES THE ELITE FOUR SUDDENLY HAVE NON-RETARDED AI" "WHY THE HELL DID I THINK THIS PUZZLE WAS HARD WHEN I WAS 10" Emerald's not my favorite one but I think everyone should play one game from each generation at least once.
Play gen2 if you have it, Gen3 never really "caught" me and i didnt like it so much.
Also, Nuzlocke runs funny as fuck.

Silver/gold/crystal is by far the most entertaining, it will take you ALOT of time to complete.

still remember playing pokemon in japanese when i understood nothing at all. i had to take a huge risk everything i overlap a skill onto another, it's pretty insane how I even managed to finish the game without reading any guide.

You should probably avoid quoting the spoiler when you're complaining about one.

Can the discussion about Flat vs Scaling armor be applied to every one type of rune?

Just tossing my 2 cents into the Flat vs PerLevel runes debate. I always value my runes based on the break even point. If per level out scales flat at 6 then I take per level. If per level don't out scale flat until 9 then I take flat. The idea here is to maximize my potential at levels 6-9. You get two power spikes, (at 6 and at 9) where you will usually still be in the laning phase or teamfights haven't fully developed and are still fighting small scirmishes.
What about the power spike at 11? When you hit this before the other team you force 5v5 and if they hit it first then you don't want to be picking any fights until you hit 11 yourself. Any advantage you get taking flat over per level runes, at least in Silver 2, is negated by bad positioning and taking minion aggro early.
TL;DR Maximize runes for level 6-9 because at level 1-5 minions are OP.

It depends on matchups a lot more. For example if you are vs tristana/sona and you take scaling mr you are bad. Most of the time it's matchup dependant if you can afford it.Also the difference isn't very big so flat is safer and the whole point of runes is to make your early stronger.

edit: if they don't have any other magic damage on the enemy team against that bot lane, then yes flat MR every time.

I don't understand how what I asked was a spoiler, but... ok

My first foray into the Pokemon discussion...
I feel that I'm a life-long die hard Pokemon fan.
I played Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow before I could read, and learned to read with Silver/Gold/Crystal. I played Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald/FireRed/LeafGreen more than any others due to my family's tendency at the time to take long car trips. I was hyped enough for Diamond/Pearl that I imported them from Japan (I still don't know any Japanese) and of course, got them in English when it came around to it. After 'competitive' play in Diamond/Pearl end-game (EV training, IV breeding, etc), I played Platinum and EV-trained at lvl1 (Sinnoh has OP EV training spots early... the first route, for example) and thoroughly destroyed the game. When B/W/HG/SS came around, me and my brother continued our competitions between ourselves.
Then B/W2 HAPPENED. By god, B/W2...
First off, 1st and 2nd gen are antiquated and design-wise, flawed. The designers realized this and that is why they were remade. Gen3 will likely not receive a remake because they were the beginning of the current Pokemon formula. Anyone who says that Gen1 or Gen2 are better (as in, the originals rather than the remakes) is looking through the ruby lenses of nostalgia.
As such, I do not recommend playing Gen1 or Gen2 as a first timer.
I think that there are a huge number of 'quality-of-life' changes made throughout the later generations that are often looked over and make them more of a joy to play in. Quick-item slot in battle for Pokeballs? The amount of hours saved by that simple feature alone... is ridiculous. So, I honestly believe that if you want the best possible Pokemon experience, you start with the DS games.
I would recommend directly:
HeartGold or SoulSilver (Doesn't matter which! These get you in on what "Pokemon" means to everybody because it includes both Johto and Kanto) followed by Platinum followed by Black/White 2
Platinum is as far as you want to go down in Sinnoh; I actually found it far more enjoyable to play through than Diamond/Pearl, and there was a lengthy gap between their releases for a reason. The stories are of course, always anime cheesy, but... that isn't the point.
Black/White 2 is by far the best, and there is just mountains upon mountains of reasons why. Black/White are good starting games much like HeartGold/SoulSilver, but I recommend HG/SS over them because HG/SS will put you closer to understanding the hype.
If you play through those 3 games (HG/SS, Platinum, B2/W2) and you do not own a 3DS, you will buy one to play X/Y in 2 months. Period. You'll pawn your belongings and sell your body and soul if you need to.
