Back when I was in China learning Chinese, I was pretty good after one year of study but my westerners classmates cant even hold a conversation after one year of study.

On a constructive note, I would also advise to raise your ELO. When leveling a smurf or helping drag a friend out of low normals-elo there is definitely a point where you will stop getting queued with toxic non-english speaking people. It only makes sense that in a team game, if you suck at the primary language of the server, you will have lower ELO.
