It's just not fun. Who are you playing? Pick Thresh or Leona and make plays. I think playing an aggro support can be one of the most fun things in this game. I mean yeah, Soraka is gonna be pretty boring to play, it all comes down to how you decide to play the role. I think that this is Riot's sentiment, and that is...unfortunate at best. Well, thresh is just ridiculous, but all in supports are not the kind of play style that lots of people like. I mean there are also poke supports like Sona/Lulu or more passive ones like Taric/Soraka. I'd say the variety of supports isn't really bad, I just find the people that hate playing support usually tend to prefer the aggro supports. Thresh/Leona are like the only two real all in supports anyway (Maybe Ali?). My two favorite characters in the game are Janna and Ali. Janna is totally antifun in YOLO-Q. Ali is probably my highest winrate champ.

I dont like all in supports, except Ali, if you consider him one, but I like supporting(in theory), I've always played buff-ing type champs like WoW Paladin/Druid, Warcry Barbs, Clerics/Bard (EQ). If I listed my supports in order of who I would like to play (if they were good): 1. Janna 2. Ali 3. Soraka 4. Lulu 5. Zyra 6. Sona 7. Taric 8. Leona 9. Blitz Unranked (Because I haven't played enough/have never played while that champ is balanced): Thresh/Elise Edit: Heck i forgot taric cus hes so...taricy

1) Leona 2) Thresh 3) Blitz 4) Sona I end up playing a lot of Taric though, mostly because he is the safest support (imo) and wins lane the easiest. I don't play Ali because I had completely forgotten about him. I'll have to dust him off. edit: What do people think of some of the unconventional supports? I just played a game with a Maokai where I was Ezreal. Since I spammed so much, Mao was getting some pretty solid sustain, and his CC and early damage is pretty nuts. Easy brush control with saplings, good gank support, etc. I could see him falling off late game because of how tanky he needs to be, but the same could be said for Thresh or Blitzcrank.

Love playing Lulu but hate playing Sona Support favoritism tiers (no particular order within tiers.) Tier 1: Thresh, Lulu, Nami, Blitzcrank Tier 2: Taric, Soraka, Alistar Tier 3: Sona, Leona Other supports or things-that-can-be-played-support I haven't really played enough to evaluate.

Blitz always has his pull, so he's semi relevant unless your team is behind to the point where you can get 2v5'd. Leona is more comparable to Mao because she has a dash/root to enemy champ and another hard CC (difference being point and click vs skillshot. However, Leona has a pretty good defense steroid which can let her dive more safely. Thresh has got an overpowered kit. He's going to be relevant all game as well. I've had games where we were 3 inhibs down but I was farming like 10 souls per wave. After a few minutes of that, I had like 300 armor and 300 damage autos, and once I got a grab, I basically instagibbed the enemy AD and AP singehandedly.

Honestly, some unconventional supports are OK: Morg, Lux, Fiddle, Leblanc, Mao, Panth, Yorik, ZIlean, but the problem is:for me at least, that I don't feel like Im supporting. And I want to support. I want to play a viable champ that has 3 heals and a shield, or 4 shielding moves, or 1 heal, 1 shield, and 2 crowd control effects. Unfortunately, that is not how the game is at the moment, so even players who think they would like support, are disappointed..

Mao support won't be tanky enough to use his W for anything other than peel after mid game; still, his Q and W are decent peel and his R scales off of enemy magic damage. I still think he could be a decent niche pick since his lane phase is quite good. That said, I can't really think of a time that I would take him over a conventional support besides maybe against an extremely AP+AoE heavy team comp (Ori + Vlad + Malph + Sona + Kog for example).
