I have barely played at all since the beginning of S3. Like, still don't know most of the new items and have no idea what the masteries are like now. A few friends are playing tonight and I thought it would be fun to make it a team event. However, I don't want to be the guy that feeds and makes it not that fun for everyone.
Is there a resource for someone who still hasn't made the transition from S2 to S3? Basically I am just looking for the go to items for bruiser, support, assassin and AP (they probably won't ever have me play ADC or jungler since I was no good at those even when I knew the items) and the standard mastery set up for those roles. Any broad suggestions would be welcome.

What build was he running? I haven't seen many successful Rengars since his nerfs.
Edited for spelling.

There are always going to be guys who have specialization in certain champs; even if the champs are on the weak side.

Jax is pretty good against anyone not named Malphite, Singed, or Rumble. I went from silver->mid-level gold almost solely from learning Jax, and playing him helped me clean up my top lane mechanics quite a bit. He's also in a pretty good place as far as balance goes, so I doubt Riot is going to buff or nerf him anytime in the foreseeable future.

He is pretty much the typical Top lane character. Plus if you get fed you can carry pretty hard. Either him or Rumble. I played some Singed before but the incoming nerfs have kind of turned me off to him (I know they aren't that bad...might still be worth playing.)

Elise is one of the strongest top laner too, she's getting nerfed next patch though...

If you want the strongest toplaner for solo Q, I'd pick Rumble. His laning is good, his teamfight presence is amazing and he snowballs really well. Elise/Singed are the other 2 top tier picks atm and while they're both a bit easier to play, they also both have a bit more weaknesses (Singed has some really hard MUs that can spank you and Elise can be difficult to play in team fights). They're also both getting nerfed next patch while Rumble will remain untouched. Other good suggestions are Renekton or Akali, both pretty much the epitome of tanky bruiser and assassin respectively.
People recommending Jax are stuck too much in S2 meta where it was all DPS bruisers like Irelia/Jax. He's not bad by any means but he's not very resembling of most currently strong toplaners either.

I know you're supposed to harass with Q a lot but I just felt like I was constantly OOM even when I was trying to save mana. But yeah, incoming nerf makes me hesitant.

It always feels to me that Singed is easier to play than Rumble though.

Jax doesn't snowball hard the way Darius, Olaf, or especially Rumble (screw the little fucker, give a nail to that guy and your lane is as good as dead, every gank lending him a kill regardless if he dies or not post-6) do, and he's much more reliant on farm. Of course giving him a kill early is a death-sentence for the lanes that require to shut him down pre-6 (hi Shen), but he can't zone and 100-0 you as soon as you misstep the way others can and he can't push very well to roam.
(I still love him and should work on my ability to Leroy as him.)

I dunno if there are any resources but builds for AP at least haven't changed much at all with the notable exception that Tear is a lot more viable on champions that it previously wasn't viable on (it charges faster and it's cheaper plus its upgrades are better). You still want deathcap and voidstaff and probably Zhonya's maybe Abyssal's at some point. A few APs like Liandry's Torment but most of them still like deathcap builds. Of champions that need mana the only ones that really build chalice/athenes anymore are Orianna and Lux (but you could probably go Tear on Lux if you wanted). Since the athenes buff it might be more viable than Tear on some other mana reliant AP mids.
DFG isn't as great as it used to be but it's still pretty mandatory on AP assassins. AD assassins love BC. Builds basically stayed the same for them too although Warmogs is generally better than GA and against heavy AD teams Randuin's Omen is better than both for your defensive item.
Support has a multitude of viable build choices but as a general rule you want sightstone and you shouldn't buy gp10 anymore (although after the change to philo stone hits that item will probably be good to buy). Locket and/or Bulwark are good items to get after your sightstone. There's really a multitude of support items that work in S3 and it's really dependent on what your jungler is building/what support you're playing.
Bruisers have a lot of build options. Most bruisers go tanky first instead of damage first but this is still reliant on which bruiser you're playing. Attack speed centric bruisers like Jax or Irelia could probably go BotRK and Zephyr despite the BotRK nerfs (although once the Sheen buff hits and Trinity gets cheaper you'll probably be better off just going back to Trinity). AD scaling bruisers still prefer Bloodthirstier. Cooldown reliant bruisers (so lots of them) can get away with like Locket+Spirit Visage and delay damage items for later (although BC is still a good choice if you aren't gonna get Visage or something to CDR cap yourself).
The biggest thing about S3 is that there are, imo, a lot of viable build paths which vary depending on your champion, your team comp, the enemy team comp, and the flow of the game. If the people you're playing with are good you'll probably see a Locket and a Bulwark in every game.

I've not played top in ages but from what I recall I can agree. Even if Singed gets behind he can still make himself useful, a rumble in the same situation requires I feel at least items to do stuff besides just drop ult and slow.
Should try to learn both as they are both quite strong and singed will be fine post nerf.

Stop with the goddamn BC on assassins, they're assassins, they want to assassinate, not help their teammates kill stuff during their peak, you don't complete the damn thing till you stop being your team's main physical damage source. :[
I'm a militant.

She takes some getting used to b/c you have to realize that your spider form packs a decent punch as well, and you need to learn when you're able to go in - % remaining health dmg means your harass does less the lower HP they get so it's a pretty fine line. Elise isn't as easy to play as people make her our to be, which is why her solo Q winrate is actually not that amazing.
Also remember - spellpen is your best friend. With guise + sorc boots you can push anyone out of lane SUPER fast.
