Most of the Melee carries i mentioned can't even be kited. Fiora has two dashes, Shyvana/Hec have R, Jax lol, J4 has two nice jumps... once of these guys wants to kill you they going to kill you with Crucible and Mercurial Scepter.
I do thing you should still have a ranged AD carry, but the melee ones at six items right now are actually much scarier if they allowed to do damage.

Tryn's viable in the case of both teams have 4 people at 6 items, which melee carry(different than casters in that they have auto-attack steroids AND generally lack non-ultimate burst damage) do I want to be scenario. The rest of them generally have to build at least 2x survivability items to not blow up instantly(probably warmogs+randuins/GA)
Arguably the only one that fits that criteria that has been run competitively is nocturne, and apart from the midlane noct in OGN, has almost always been built wriggles-> tank.

Mid Noc is mostly about blowing people up with his RQ then die. He relies on his burst and his huge gapcloser instead of pure DPS.

Melee carries are still tankier than their ranged counterparts, and with runic bulwark, the qss upgrade giving 45 mr while being an offensive item, and with a team that could run ap janna, ap lulu, and support soraka, it's significantly harder to get blown up.
One of the biggest issue with melee ads has always been that cc prevents them from getting their massive amounts of life steal that allows them to tank a fair bit of damage. Take away that and you have a ton of possibilities in a 4-support-1 game. Imagine an ad sion that couldn't be kited and could always use his ult to the fullest extent.
EDIT: Or karma! Lux shield! Orianna shield! Imagine a mundo built ad carry with a warmogs that gets infinity shields placed on him when he gets low melting through people with his steriod!

But the thing is there are legitimate Carry items that give you defences.
No reason not to build both Mercurial Scepter and Frozen Fists on msot of these champions. Add in Hydra Lifesteal that pretty scary.
I honestly dont think Tryn Viable melee carry out of ones available,m he too easily kited. Think Fiora much much better. Would rather have the defensive steroids of a Jax or Shyvana as well.

You will 100% still blow up in melee if your only defensive items are mercurial and FF. A 6 item AD/AP will not give a shit that you have 130/130 resist instead of 80/80. An ER from a 600 AP anivia will "only" do about 1/3 your health, an AD carry will only shoot you for 300 a shot, 750 with crit.
You need to remember with the penetration changes, resists aren't worth as much, especially when you have low amounts of it. You need high EHP to survive, which is only really gotten through stuff like warmogs+resist item or randuins/SV
