Kids on reddit tried to convince me that Ahri loses to Swain. I cannot fathom why they would believe that. I'm pretty sure Ahri loses to some champions but she doesn't really do that bad against most common mids. I think she definitely struggles with Galio but I don't think it's too heavily skewed against her.
I don't think she needs more nerfs though. Her lane phase is really good and she's strong through out most of the game but I don't think she's as good as like TF or Karthus or Anivia. I don't think her team fight presence is as good as like Morgana or Vlad or Kennen either.

I think the basic assumption on Ahri vs Swain is that she can't be as mobile as she wants to and she has a hard time bursting him at lvl 6. Personally I have no idea how that matchup plays out if people aren't fucking around.

Why would you ever want to get near Swain with any AP that isn't Cassie/Sion/LB? His damage is retarded strong in lane pre-6, possibly the highest only behind Cassie/LB.

Ahri is one of those bitch lanes. She's one of the few champions that don't have a bad lane. The best case scenario for picking Ahri, you shit all over your lane, and gank all the other lanes, and shit on them too.
Worst case scenario, your lane becomes a farm lane, and the other ap carry *might* out scale you into late (ryze has been known to do this).

Yeah, but that just means you can't kill Swain. Swain's never gonna stop Ahri from farming unless you play stupid and get hit by a random W or let him get too close. Ahri pushes harder than him too. The only time I had to lane against Swain as Ahri I just farmed until I had blue buff, then pushed the lane and went to gank while he tried to farm at tower. Could've been a "bad" Swain but it's not like Swain pushes that well. Ahri pushes well and is a good ganker.
Seems like every time you could just farm safe as Ahri, get blue to push lane, and then go gank. Just like any match up where Swain has someone that out pushes him he has to decide to follow his opponent and lose CS or stay in lane to get CS and hope his teammates do okay.
I think Ryze, Galio, and Cassiopeia are much worse lanes for Ahri personally. Ryze typically is pretty tanky, outscales you, and pushes decently when he ults (assuming you try to clear and then roam), Galio clears faster than you and is tanky, and Cass is just Cass (but as was mentioned Ahri can go even against Cass).

Yeah, I'm sure that in a straight 1v1 in a vacuum Swain would beat Ahri. But I think that if you're just farming until first blue, wave clear, and then roaming you can do just fine as Ahri against Swain in lane.

Thats pretty much how you should go about playing the matchup as Ahri imo, unless the Swain is horrible at dodging skill shots.
Swain's weakness has always been shovers. Like you said, shove the lane and go gank other lanes. Whenever I face a Swain with anyone that isn't Cassie/Orianna, I purposefully avoid all contact and shove the lane on him.
If I play Swain vs Ahri, I go out of my way to trade with her at level 1 and onward, pretty much like with every other matchup he has. E+AAs out-damages her outside of her q hitting for true damage as well as the usual damage. One snare on her pretty much means she loses ~half her health.

If you're looking to just branch out from support I like picking one less-played but still strong champ for top or mid and just learn the shit out of them. The unusual champs means you will know most of the matchups for that champ but regular top/mid laners won't necessarily.
Fiora/Volibear/Malzahar/Nidalee/Xerath/Ziggs can all do very well if your lane opponent isn't particularly familiar with them.
