I can sort of understand why they picked up HoN over LoL tho, it has a way larger playerbase. However, I don't think the people who don't play it will appreciate the endless ricing that earlygame LoL consists of. Another reason for the LoL pickup is probably RIOT's eagerness to promote their game (as displayed with WCG etc.), HoN has taken a more laidback approach and only recently seems to have adopted their rivals offensive marketing strategies.

I don't follow LoL at all so I don't know. There won't be a next event, next MLG will have HoN and they'll decide which to keep after

As Lee said on twitter to HuK, the two(three) games may not be exclusive. http://twitter.com/#!/MLGLee/status/102145350638383104 Right now, LoL is the leader in terms of viewership and when HoN/DotA2 get comparable player base/viewers, MLG will likely add them in. Sundance even said on twitter that HoN could happen at MLG less than 2 weeks ago. http://twitter.com/#!/MLGSundance/status/97539903470047232

From what I've seen of their fans, they can be pretty rabid and zealous. (in a good way)

I wouldn't call LoL a bad spectator esport if 200k people are willing to watch it on stream. That just screams potential.

LoL's playerbase is big enough that this probably won't be a problem, but it's not like SC2 where you can show the game to any random non-gamer and they can still enjoy it.

Riot needs to do what i suggested a while ago and make short vids showing all of a characters abilities that they can then play during champ select to liven up the process. Of course, Riot refuses to hire me, so no one is actually capable of telling them to do that.
