Games like halo and sc2 have a kind of spectator appeal to them even if you do not play them.
Some games do not translate well over to a full on esport that can carry a solid viewership. League of legends sports a 180k viewership at this years Dreamhack im pretty sure that trumps any sc2 stream to date by far as far as daily streams LoL pulls just as much as sc2 if not more on own3d.tv RIOT made it so that everybody who was in the LoL lobby counted as a viewer, even tho you couldn't actually view it thru the lobby, there was a link there. WP RIOT. If they did this, the view count would be in the 6 digits, so yeah no.

There was a link to the stream in the client that you could click if you wanted to watch the Dreamhack competition, but simply having the client open did not count you as a viewer.

The people who are criticising LoL for being in the lineup have no idea on the fanbase that the game has.
Dreamhack at one point hit 200k viewers (note, 2x that of SC2's viewer count). It got there based on popularity, whether you like it or not it's going to be quite successful in the overall E--sports community.
Edit:
MLG always likes adding the more "popular" games, although I'll admit they haven't exactly worked out in the past (SSBB anyone?)
Its one of those things where even if you don't like the game, no need to criticize them for trying to spread the game.

Hope it works out for them.. but i mean DotA 2 is coming out- why pick up LoL now? It'll take like a fucking year to complete if it somehow happens to go 7 games. Probably looking at 40 minute games with like 15 minutes to pick and ban and get everyone ready.

MLG uses the "extended series" though, and because LoL is going to be pool play every team will play every other team in a bo3 before the finals. So at most the finals will go to 5 games, and even that's unlikely because of the huge psychological disadvantage of starting a bo7 down 0-2.

Tell that to MC.
Though, it will still be a long finals more than likely. LoL games can drag on even if one sided.

i guess i need to figure out what is going on so i can watch these games. right now to me it just looks like characters running at each other :|

I'd much rather watch DotA or HoN. So I guess I'm glad they didn't chose one of those; I won't have to watch another stream simultaneously.

Can we just put a warning at the top that any post bashing LoL or saying how much better some other game will be an automatic ban?
It's really gotten old.

I don't know where you see this potential from, but the game is still so under-developed as an Esport I can't see it being spectator-friendly. If you want a spectator friendly UI, SC2 is a clearly a good example, but also look at hon's spectator UI.. popouts of the items when everyone someone buys it... good detailed info on the stats from last hits, g/m, and just very informative and spectator-friendly. Furthermore, the lack of a pause function really makes LoL a joke when compared to any game such as this where one game could easily take 30+ minutes and restarting a game is a very controversial thing to do. I'm not a HoN fanboy who hates LoL, seeing as I play both at a high level but the two games have issues that will stop them from being successful in the esports scene unless things change. S2 has a horrible esports department and marketing that they just lagged in player base and will never truly bring enough players or anywhere near LoL to make HoN a heavily-supported game. (remember advertising is everything when it comes to sponsors). Riot also runs LoL as a business and the game was 100% never intended to be concentrated as a esport at the start If you want to argue this, you'll have to explain the lack of a pause, when the bane of dota was the fact that pausing/reconnecting was impossible.. which was btw what made HoN very friendly to dota players. This is also ignoring the fact that they need to have a special server where all heroes are available and observer. Also you need to download a third-party program to get replays? This definitely does not seem to be the making of a game with esports in mind. Most esports-oriented games will try to start people on even-footing and let the skills take care of the rest, not provide perks in which people need to purchase or play for a while to earn. Riot runs LoL like a business, which is fine, but they haven't been and need to start making changes to the game that makes it spectator-friendly and develop it towards being a esport. Potential being the key word... Any team based game has way more potential as an esport... Look at cs 1.6... look at even WoW. WoW arena was pathetic as an esport, and blizzard made it impossible to continue promoting it at lans... but it got more viewers than any other esport game. Do you know about a game called BW? The most successful esport in the world. No game, let alone team games, right now (maybe except for SC2 with time) comes close to having the potential to mirror its success as an esport.
No, sorry, bw is the most successful esport in korea, not the world. It never took on a global scale to the degree that games like 1.6, quake series, and hell even WoW took.
Im not trying to downplay bw, i love it to death, much more than I love sc2, but when you look at esports you have to look at it thoroughly, what is big in what regions and why. Many have cited LoL as having tons of viewers for some event, WoW and CS have been known to have massive viewership in their primes as well. In korea 1v1 rts is king, outside of it, different picture.

Remember how well WoW did in MLG? Bigger =/= better. I agree that this is good for e-sports but to use the amount of users that actively play it a day as a basis for how well the game is to do would not be an accurate representation. I'm sure both Halo and CoD have more players a day than SC2, but look at the spectator numbers for each game. Yea but WoW is just, inarguably, a terrible e-sports game. It's painfully obvious the only reason it was attempted was the sheer amount of players that played the game. Spectating an arena match is basically just looking at health bars, that's it, it's just not fun.
DotA esque games are nowhere near that magnitude of horrible for observers, although I personally don't find them as enjoyable for RTS style games, it's a lot more watchable, and LoL has already proven that there's a big audience for the game.

Not a fan of LOL HoN style games as a spectator or a competitive sport but glad its coming to MLG. Just wish that they would put money into SC2.....
People at MLG probably decided to not put that much money into SC2 cuz they know that SC2 will succeed despite the prize pool while other games *cough* Dota2 *cough* would not do as well without a massive prize pool. Ill watch a game or two

The issue with the SC2 prize money was dealt with a while ago with Sundance on SotG iirc. MLG could not be certain of the success of SC2 during its planning phase last year and they also like to keep their prize pool approximately equivalent between the games (~$4000/1st place player). I think someone mentioned that they are reconsidering the policy of a static prize pool for next year, but who knows if that will happen.
