Both in terms of draft strategy and avoiding mistakes in positioning, ultimates and shotcalling. Not at all in terms of draft strategy, I think some of the drafts were quite bad, honestly. I was just going to mention a few comments, but then I ended up writing this. Enjoy: ![]() Game 1 probably makes the most sense, but still not really. MVP.B FBs Kael'Thas, Team Hero is obligated to ban Rehgar as an "OP" Hero. MVP.B then takes Jaina and prevents Hero from getting a mage they want. Paradoxically, Hero responds with Uther/Zagara, maybe out of fear of an Uther/ETC combo inc, but they sacrifice a lot of waveclear for it (which is important on Dragon Shire). MVP.B then picks ETC/Tyrande, which is a solid comp, but sacrifices a lot of waveclear and fails to punish Hero for giving up all of their lane control with their first two picks; at this point, they're relying entirely on Jaina to clear waves in a 4-1 split. Second bans inc, Diablo for MVP.B, no idea why - maybe LB/Apoc synergy with Maw? Who knows, maybe they were going for a double tank draft the entire time and were trying to freeze Hero out of useful Warriors. Hero then bans Chen. It's kind of paradoxical, but I guess it makes sense if you consider the bodyblock potential + Blizzard/Lunar Flare, especially if they wanted to go Li-Ming next, which.... They do. This is probably because they got frozen out of a mage earlier and wanted some burst damage. Tass for secondary support, but probably not necessary if you've already secured Zagara as a solo laner and they can't freeze MVP.B out of good solo laners; this is most likely because they were afraid of the stun and burst train, and Uther couldn't heal enough. MVP.B then goes double Warrior with Muradin to help counter the Li-Ming (Anub and Johanna were still on the table, Anub potentially a stronger choice here) as well as Thrall to match Zagara in lane. Keep in mind that MVP.B has next to no waveclear aside from Jaina on this map, so rotations are always going to be a bit slower than Hero's. Hero then picks up Johanna to round out their composition and give them some better waveclear - really the only decent tank left since Leoric isn't an option against Jaina/Tyrande. Hero wins the draft because MVP.B isn't playing to the map at all. Hero outrotates MVP.B hard in the early game, WooJae beats KyoCha in the solo lane...it all adds up to a strong early lead that they carry for the rest of the game. ![]() More of the same in G2. Tomb of the Spider Queen = waveclear is unbelievably important. Hero FBs Uther for some reason (Likely afraid of ETC/Uther - KT or Sonya are probably better bans here), MVP.B is obligated to ban Rehgar (OP pick). Hero FPs Jaina, which is solid, but fails to deny MVP.B KT, so it's not a great victory. MVP.B responds with the same Tyrande/ETC pick from the first game, so no waveclear for them. Hero then takes Tass/Zagara, both solid choices on this map, and they force KyoCha into either Thrall or Sonya to deal with Zagara and also prevent the Zeratul sleeper pick. Hero then bans Chen again for no good reason. At this point, they're just scared instead of playing to the draft; they can punish MVP.B super hard for their bad early game choices. Banning KT or Sonya would have completely crippled MVP.B from lack of waveclear since they were unlikely to pick Johanna, Leoric, or Sylvanas. MVP.B bans Johanna, smart choice, forces Hero into Muradin (Leoric can't stand up to Tyrande/ETC and doesn't do well against hard engage, and Diablo doesn't synergize with their comp). MVP.B gets KT/Sonya, a lot of their problems are alleviated, but they still really lack some crucial waveclear in the early game. Again, they're relying entire on the map to clear waves, so they're going to be slow on rotations. Hero picks Muradin to get their tank and Monk to counter some of the burst incoming. LP Falstad for MVP.Black, kind of curious pick. Falstad is all hard engage and provides them sustained damage and a means to disengage from a Maw if necessary; Valla and Greymane are also options, but MVP.B values the disengage here. Hero wins draft again because they played to the map. Ironically, they disregarded MVP.B's picks quite a bit and did two fear bans, so MVP.B got away with far more than they should have. Contrasted to that, MVP.B did not play to the map at all, but managed to shut down a lot of Hero's options so that they were left with a super passive composition against a late game god comp with super hard engage. Hero won the early game hard as expected, carried their lead into the late game, but were not able to close it out before 20:00, so MVP.B just beat them in better teamfights. I'll do analysis on the rest of the games later if anyone's interested. I gotta run right now ^^. | ||
