As far as I know, Dota's model is only profitable because it drives people towards using Steam, which gives you ads every time you quit a game.

wow, so theyre following the LoL marketing.
was doing what valve did even considered?

Nah, its only the first time you close a game since you last signed into steam. And $10 bucks for a hero is ridiculous, though I will admit I don't know how that compares to what Riot charges, so it might be the standard.

The only ads I get when I quit a game on steam is any of their products up for sale on their platform. Who pays Valve to display those ads?

Regardless, I don't think it would be profitable without the Steam thing. Riot charges $7 for the most expensive heroes by the way. I think $10 for the most expensive is a test to see if people will pay more if a hero has some background lore from other games (which doesn't exist in LoL obviously)

its expensive, but people will buy. blizzard is gonna make a lot of money off this game.

Exactly, it's not arbitrary, there's more money to be made selling a character that's been around for over a decade than something you just made up.

I had to look up what Stiches was from, apparently it's a random creature that walks around in wow (and of course its an abom from wc3). Doesn't seem like it should cost more than most heroes. Though it could be its popularity comes from dota, :p

Sold separately of course.

Yeah if it weren't for Dota I don't think they'd charge more for Stitches than for Diablo. Then again the prices aren't final, with RoS coming out they might switch those prices.

This is one of those weird myths propagated on the internet. I don't know why anyone believes it.

Do that many people really buy the cosmetics in Dota?

I'm actually suprised that someone buys stuff for a game that is in alpha. I mean common, stop buying shit that is not even complete !!! My head hurts every time I hear about "early access", kickstarter and things like that. I'm pretty sure these prices will change, because right now they are not tested at all. When they see actual data, they will update the prices accordingly... And if people are buying even in the Alpha I don't think the prices are going down

It's not a myth. You can't run free game just on cosmetics. Especially with Dota2's population of players.

People buy stuff in the alpha because they get the money back in their blizz wallet every time they wipe the current accounts so the money never "leaves" it just stays in alpha. And consider that the people with alpha atm are a lot of content providers the skins and money spent on a game they will be promoting for a little while is worth it. People want to see the skins and different champs so its an investment in a way for them.

Speaking during day two of Steam Dev Days, the company revealed it paid out $400,000 to content creators in the first week of 2014.

yes. the fancy hat system already was a success for TF2 and a huge economy evolved from it (i made over 400$ trading tf2 shit).
valve is printing money with the most perfect f2p model instead of ripoff systems like what hots seems to be going with.

Makes me sad I stopped playing TF2 in like 2008.

Just looks to much like a LoL clone when in fact they could have been the first ones to make an official big Dota game but just didn't have any kind of foresight. Now it looks like LoL and is way worse than Dota 2 for the not-so-casual-player.

The movement, damage and abilities look too much like LoL. Hmm....
