so are they gonna lend an ipad to all the 128 players ? I think it's dumb if you can't play it on PC...i guess blizzard offered lot of dirty esport money to make the promotion of the iPad version :/ I'm not against lend iPad to the invited players and make people play on iPad on the stream, but if 128 of the players are obligated to play on iPad it's really dumb
|
Don't really see the problem with using iPads. Depending how they capture the video between the devices it might offer a better viewing experience than what we see when players use PCs.
|
I was gonna go and play open bracket, but only 4 people from open bracket? Really? No way im going now.

Ofc you dont have to bring your own.

you wouldn't have made it if top 64 qualified
|
What is the selection criteria for being a seed? Probably doing well on invite only tournaments

Seems like dreamhack listened to criticism from the last event with seeded players getting to the top 16 straight away and double elimination for the open bracket.

Still some time left to practice opening bottles of champagne if you intend to win
|
I wanted to go until I read that there's only 4 qualifier spots. I dont't know anymore!
|
Time for that Apple sponsorship.
|
Wow that's really neat that they're doing it on iPad, hope the spectating will work... And I agree, get dat dirty apple sponsorship esports money
|
not sure why they're playing it on ipad instead of PC. Bit of an odd choice unless they're trying to advertise for the ipad. Huge prizepool looks awesome though

Having 75% of the player pool invited seems like a step backwards considering how many players would love a shot to win a dreamhack.
|
will be awesome!!! so Hyped!! !

I like the choice for iPads. You can put opponents next to eachother on a couch with commentators in between or so.
And when someone rages they can throw their iPad to pieces.

Top players could easily fails top 4 by a few positions due to RNG. well technically it is possible for anyone to win and 4 qualifier spots should be enough in case there is any player out there who is just miles ahead of anybody else. however, if all players are around the same level anyway you can understand them wanting to invite a lot of people

Thinking about going, but having to buy the BYOC pass may be too much for me.
|
Still no swiss?
hahaha. oh man. The admins have 0 clue how to run a TCG tournament
If they have ipads, easily B03 Swiss Rounds, 6 Rounds(if 128 or less players) cut to the top16. Ideally for fairness sake, they should cut the the top32 and continue on to find the top4.
Its not hard dreamhack, stop getting SC2 admins to run Hearthstone. Its not the same thing.
Will not pay my way to sweden for 2 coinflips.
|
It is not quite clear to me yet if the whole tournament will be on iPad or only from the round of 16 and if you have to bring your own PC and/or iPad for any part of it. Some clarification on that would be nice. The fact that you have to buy a BYOC spot for the part before the round of 16 makes it sound like you need to bring your own PC, which would be hard for somebody who has to fly in, unless he owns a laptop.
|
the admins for the 2 competitions (sweden and bucharest) are different. I have no clue what their setup is and what time and how many computers they have to run things, but we did the best we could with what we had. Sorry if it wasnt good enough for high standards, but we will improve next time.

Well if its a BYOC/providing ipads for the event, then I do not see why NOT doing swiss is a problem.
Swiss is best for competitors(since you are playing a card game) and since it is a live-event people will not be inclined to drop-out of the tournament like they do in online swiss tournaments.
You can improve now and just change the format, absolutely nothing changes.
lol.

lol.
128 double elim bo3, then round of 16 group stage double elim bo3 and then bo5 single elim.
Seems like a great format to me.I understand that as a player you would prefer swiss format but this is way better for the viewers, more exciting and still fair.

im not in charge of the hs tournament in jonkoping, i had a little input in Bucharest and thats it. Atm im not even sure if the 128 bracket will be played on ipads or just the final 16. Sure if its all on ipads and they have 128 of them they could do swiss, but somehow i doubt that is the case. Prolly they have around 30-40 computers, the 128 man bracket is set for 2 days, with bo3 double elim thats how long it would take to get 4 winners out of that.

yeah, for this swiss just works so much better... albeit i guess its harder for rounds to continue if one group is particularly slow...

How is it more exciting/better for viewers? Its a tournaments its about the players. Swiss allows for people who are good but have bad luck still get through. A B03 Swiss will get the best players through, rather than the lucky good players. In Swiss, 128+ tournament, you can go 0-2 to 5-2 and still make top cut(however many rounds you have)
If it is a BYOC(which it seems) there seems to be no reason why they cannot do swiss other than bad admining.

It is more exciting because every match is important.Since it's double elim you get 2 chances which is fair and it also guarantees that the best players will advance.Of course there will be upsets but that's fine,it's a card game.
