Google Plans to Introduce a PC Operating System
By MIGUEL HELFT and ASHLEE VANCE

SAN FRANCISCO — In a direct challenge to Microsoft, Google is expected to announce on Wednesday that it is developing an operating system for a personal computer based on its Chrome browser, according to two people briefed on Google’s plans.

The details of the technology could not be learned, but Google plans to make the announcement on a company blog on Wednesday afternoon, this person said.

Google did not immediately return calls and e-mail messages seeking comment.

The move would sharpen the already intense competition between Google and Microsoft, whose Windows operating system controls the basic functions of the vast majority of personal computers.

Google could well be hoping to capitalize on the rise of netbooks, the compact, low-cost computers that have turned the PC world on its head.

Google already has already developed an operating system called Android, that is used for mobile phones. The software is also being built into lightweight PCs called netbooks by several manufacturers.

Google has not encouraged netbook makers to use Android as an operating system, and the Chrome-based operating system appears to be the company’s preferred software for operating netbooks.

Google has also long promoted a vision of computing in which applications delivered over the Web play an increasingly central role, replacing software programs that run on the desktop. In that world, applications run directly inside an Internet browser, rather than atop an operating system, the traditional software that controls most of the operations of a PC.

Last year, the company released the Chrome browser, which it described as a tool for users to interact with increasingly powerful Web programs, like Gmail, Google Docs and online applications created by other companies. Since then, Google has been adding capabilities to Chrome, like the ability to allow it to run applications even when a user is not connected to the Internet.

It is not clear how much work it would take for Google to turn Chrome into the central part of a full fledged operating system. But in a recent interview, Marc Andreessen, who developed the first commercial browser and co-founded Netscape, compared Chrome into an operating system

“Chrome is basically a modern operating system,” Mr. Andreessen said.

Google has also long customized a version of the Linux operating system for use internally.

The rise of netbooks has started to challenge some of Microsoft’s dominance in personal computing software. The first wave of netbooks relied on various versions of the open-source Linux operating system, and major PC makers like Hewlett-Packard and Dell have backed the Linux software.

In an unusual move, Intel, the world’s largest chip maker, has worked on developing a Linux-based operating system called Moblin as well.

The company has aimed the software at netbooks and smart phones in a bid to spur interest for its mobile device chip sold under the Atom brand.

To combat these efforts, Microsoft began offering its older Windows XP operating system for use on netbooks at a low price. In addition, the company has vowed that is upcoming Windows 7 software, due out this fall, will run well on the tiny laptops.

Netbooks have stood out as the brightest part of the PC market during the global economic downturn. Overall, PC sales have plummeted, while netbooks sales have surged.

Haha finally. After spending millions and millions every year to fight microsoft, apple and the likes indirectly. I was wondering when they would finally take such a direct approach.

I'm interested to know why not simply write their own linux distribution. I'm gonna look this up.
edit: nvm, just read about it in their blog, this is actually a linux distribution ^^

I'm all for it. Fight the power!

Google is slowly but confortably conquering the industry. I don't that's a bad thing, I love Chrome myself.

Still, Facebook and other sites like it fail hard.

Yeah, it won't amount to anything in the personal computer space.
Hardware vendors would need something extra generous from google to push their OS.
If there is one thing that Microsoft does well, it is their ability to team up with other players and make profit from the ignorant majority.

But in the SMB and high end workstation space. I think they can do very well if they can integrate cloud computing on a massive scale and support it with a nice and reliable application stack.

Let me rehype this. If there is one company in the whole world with the technical + marketing power to get a linux distribution to become more popular than windows+mac. Consequently bringing the open source culture to match and then maybe even exceed proprietary culture. Regardless of how "well" it runs on Netbooks or not. That company is google.

Will it succeed on all that? Well I dunno. But google surely have the potential ^^

Which would be in-browser, be completely free, have advertisements on the top and right side of the screen, but be more balanced than the original Starcraft, and be probably the best game you ever played.

I'm sold.

Will try this out. Do not think it will come anywhere near ubuntu or XP though. Will take quite a while to improve.

Yeah.

But like all things people might get a little suspicious, I remember like a year or two ago, there were these rumors about google releasing an OS and whatnot.

Maybe it's time for them to really do it. I hope it's good ;( (Not like the screens that were running around back then)

I believe this OS is more of a 'shell' (I don't mean literally in comp terms) for the computer to load chrome and then your apps will all be in the cloud. EDIT2: As opposed to 'just a linux distro thats been modded', the article clearly made the distinction between this new thing and what google currently use in their own offices.

This announcement is something a lot of people have been predicting since chrome came out with separate processes for each tab (i.e. if your app crashes it doesn't crash the whole browser and thus your entire operating system).

EDIT: A couple of years ago I would have scoffed at the chance of something like this succeeding, but since recent advances in javascript extensions and some of the new html5 elements (specifically the <canvas> element) I will admit to pretty high hopes for the concept.
Their are four errors in this sentance.

One slight problem.

Googles business model (as in every product they ever created and will create ) is based on them owning your information in some way, by this I mean that it will stored on some remote server that can be accessed by google at any time and other people depending on access rights.

With this new system everything about your computer and what you store on the computer will be seen on the internet. Yes there will be usernames and passwords to assure that only you decide what people can view your computer, what you cannot decide is to make your computer strictly offline.

This would means that Google would have no idea of what you have on your computer thus their business model falls short. Do you really want everything on your computer to be accessable online with no option to take certain parts of the content offline?

The benefits is that your operative system becomes one with the internet, the backside is that it requires some very heavy antihack software to keep it secure.

Good or Bad? Who knows.

Funny thing is, Google's distro will most likely be more popular than most other distros while not necessarily being better.

Fucking google.. it is the microsoft of this decade.
