I figured it was time to make another one of these threads because i want to expand my music collection again. This is a thread to post music you really enjoy, but nothing too main stream please. i made one of these threads months ago; you can find the first one here:
post either the youtube video or the myspace of the artist you like (please tell us which song to listen to if it's myspace). make sure you give a brief description of the artist as well.
i'll go first! this is a canadian artist Final Fantasy. he named himself after the game but his songs are not remixes of the games music. he plays a violin and has several pedals at his feet which are hooked up to different recorders. he plays a few notes then taps the pedal putting those notes on repeat. then he moves on to another part of the song, playing with the different notes he played previously, it's quite interesting to watch and impressively technical. give it a little over a minute to play before you draw any conclusions. enjoy!
post some good stuff! there were some great artists posted in the previous thread! lets do it again DO NOT POST IF YOU CAN'T FIND A SAMPLE OF YOUR ARTISTS SONGS.
Start - Depapepe: Two Japanese guys playing a very nice acoustic duet. Very uplifting, hence the name Start (I believe). Involves a very repetitive strumming pattern throughout the song, but with various solos, alternating with each player.
Eve - California Guitar Trio A very mellow, peaceful mix of two acoustics, a bass, and very light drums in the background. It's a nice song to really lay back and phase out to. I can't really place any specifics, but there is quite a bit of emotion, as how I percieve it.
Baba Yetu - Stanford A Cappella An amazing song, involving great three(?) part harmonies, and a male tenor as the main voice. It is an a cappella group. I read somewhere it is sung in Swahili, but I'm not sure. it is written by Christopher Tin. Very emotional, and has an uplifting spirit, but combined with a sort of passion.
Recently, I've been looking for some good Indy bands/songs. Anyone mind posting/PMing me songs? EDIT: I realize how broad this request is. I don't care, send me anything!
EDIT2: Tasteless, do you mean to say I wrote these descriptions for nothing?
this is Alias. i really recommend clicking on the 3rd song: What You Gave Away. this guy has really laid back music but i really enjoy it. it's very peaceful electronica, with an entrancing sound. ENJOY!
Insomnium is sogood.gif, one of my favorite bands of all time.
I'd recommend a band called Loom, here's their myspace. A review on their page says "At the Drive in + Cursive", and I'd say that's pretty accurate. I'd recommend listening to Breath, it's my favorite song of theirs and it's overall a really good song. Surface is pretty damn good as well.
Loom is a finely oiled beast of a band :D so in sync with each other lol
all that remains didn't show up to warped tour ! that suxed. they ditched us for Japanese girls on tour with CoB (quoting first music thing lol) + Show Spoiler +

This is a very particular band called Nevermore. They've already been around a long time, and they have a very interesting style. The vocalist has an amazing range, from soft, high notes to growls. It's hard to categorize them, but progressive thrash metal probably fits best. This song is called Believe in Nothing. The lyrics are generally about political and social issues.
heh all that remains did a cover on that; i generally didn't like their newer album though =/ was alright
There is no good youtube vids of them, I suggest listening to "Smuggled Mutation" and "The Return" as they are both great songs from their last album. EDIT: You can change the menu to the album "Palace of Mirrors" and play a much clearer version of "The Return". Many songs on that album are great but those are definitely the best two.
The band is best described as a country classical alternative jazz metal surf japanese psychedelic electronic progressive anti-progressive death metal gypsy scottish irish rock band. (I think that covers everything, a lot of their songs certainly cover half of that at any particular point)

imagine listening to smuggled mutation stoned out of your mind you would be going nuts
But besides that, check out Imogen Heap if you didnt already. She performs live partly like that final fantasy thing you explained except she uses her voice instead.
Current band that I've recently gotten into and enjoy immensly is Godspeed You! Black Emperor. I really enjoy their style/genre of music, it really pulls me into what I'm listening too.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Blaise Bailey Finnegan III part 1
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Blaise Bailey Finnegan III part 2
Listening to this band also brought me to Explosions In The Sky. Along the same line as Godspeed You! Black Emperor but different, and I enjoy them a lot as well.
Explosions in the Sky - The Birth and Death of the Day
Of course a good music thread requires Muse, whom I hope needs no introduction. I really like their HAARP Tour: Live from Wembley DVD(although I unfortunatly don't have it myself >< ), it's quite good.
Muse - Stockholm Syndrome (HAARP Tour: Live from Wembley DVD)
hes an electric jazz bassist, among other things, and imo a very talented player. i dont know much about him apart from his solo stuff and his work with SMV, but hes got a great thumb style and i think he really kicks ass especially in the fusion genres. definetely check him out if you like the funky sort of bass (well not as funky as larry, but still)
They are a bass trio of marcus miller, stan clarke and mr wooten. they are great, they have just released a new album called Thunder and its GREAT!!! i loved it. again, if you liike marcus milller check them out
What can i say, maybe the greatest sax of all time? definetely one of best jazz players, his improv style was absolutely incredible, he was able to use one single lick or phrase from the head and just change it around and solo for so long, its incredible.
i love joe, i love his chord melody style, i love his swing, i love his sad/mellow tone, and i love how he could play just the right number of notes without wankery and overdoing it. when i hear that walking bass and those chords, i just float into another plane, its so great
ill post some more later, please check them out. oh btw, they are all jazz or jazz-related
Some background: Funk’s distinctive style reflects unconventional time signatures and extremely rapid and erratic rhythms. Unpredictable and stimulating, the music is intense. He is known for making experimental IDM (Intelligent Dance Music), breakcore and glitchcore, although he can’t be only bound to those genres. Musical influences include funk, free jazz, metal, gabba and symphonies.
A kind of nice vibe to it, the main rythm of the song is like this sync mixed with electronica and drum samples, following by a more fast tempo, but the same amazing rythm in the back. I found these guys back in the day, and I still really really like them.
It's like a departure from all the noise I constantly hear ?
I don't listen to new music anymore, here are things I still put on. I don't know what your criteria for mainstream is, this stuff is well known in its respective circles but rarely outside. That MIA track sees play in college bars though.
Roky Erikson. Super early psych rock and by far some of the best stuff the rock genre ever produced. Hes really crazy and it shows in his stuff; grab a copy of The Evil One (it was re-released in the past few years) his other stuff is pretty hit and miss.
Mercyful Fate. Part of the 'first wave' black metal bands, one of the few that held up over time. It sounds like 70s metal trying to identify itself and not black metal as it became in the 90s. Melissa and Dont Break the Oath are the only albums from my teenage years that I still love, anyone who tells you they like metal and doesn't love King Diamond is probably an idiot. A lot of his later stuff sucks though.
Metallica did a medley of a number of their songs on Garage Inc, its pretty badass. + Show Spoiler +
Though all the originals off that album are badass as hell (Diamond Head LOLOL).
Bunji Garlin - Pan and Soca its soca music, caribbean sounds + Show Spoiler +
also, I don't know if you consider it mainstream, most people probably heard this tune somewhere, but I don't think it has enough recognition for its awesomeness Teddybears & Mad Cobra - Cobrastyle (like alternative rock remix of Jamaican ragga song?) + Show Spoiler +
Korean Underground Hip-hop. Not like that Epik High, Dynamic Duo etc. crap. This is easily the best korean Hip-Hop artist out there. Ignito made a album called 'Demolish' but now this year he has released a collab with Dazdepth, and they call themselves Revenans. Their first album is selftitled.
I'll list a couple of songs from both Revenans and Ignito's album.
I'm very into music with great vocals, and good layers of music. But I must say I also enjoy harmony, and good rhythm but not with too much excess.
Mates of State, they're a great indie group part of the Polyvinyl Records group (they've been getting some decent publicity lately), anyways Mates of State is composed of a husband and wife and they seem to have a good connection in their songs.
Anna Nalick, shes probably more mainstream than the Mates of State but I really enjoy her vocals. This is not the song video, as it has none, but its decent all the same
Foy Vance has a very powerful voice, and that mixed with the simple background music make him sound awesome (which he is), anyways these are my two favorite songs by him
Gabriel and the Vagabond by Foy Vance Indiscriminate Act of Kindness
The Mars Volta are pretty well known now, but their sound is original and very interesting, the lead singer has a great voice as well.
Televators by The Mars Volta Miranda that ghost just isin't holy anymore + Show Spoiler +
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPeSbITit5U (bad quality but w/e)
Damien Rice, he has also become very mainstream but his music is very awesome. Also he went from living in the streets to famous artist, which is totally cool.
The Blower's Daughter (his most famous song) by Damien Rice Elephants
Modest Mouse: Teeth Like God's Shoeshine. I can never get enough of this song, especially the middle sections, which just are just heartwrenching (imo). The song is on the longer side which allows it to touch in a bunch of places.
And finally something i actually found on teamliquid! I think it was Day[9] that wrote a thread about it, but I checked out Trentemoller on a whim, and jesus galloping christ his music is amazing. If you need some minimal electronica it's here.

Eric Clapton I think Manablue mentioned him awhile back in a thread long ago and since then I've really come to attach to his music. Mix of blues, classic rock with some great solos and riffs. Lyrics are heartfelt and profound. + Show Spoiler +
High Contrast. One of the most talented Liquid Funk/dnb producers of today. He comes from Wales and makes beautiful music. So if youre open to electronic music definitely check it out:

The song Barra Barra from his album Made In Medina was featured in the 2001 film Black Hawk Down as well as in the Games Convention 2008 trailer of the game Far Cry 2.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rachid_Taha he has made a lot of music, most of it not my cup of tea, but he really hit it with this song, most of the songs in his album "Made in Medina" are decent ~
found this description, not sure its valid, but it will do..
Rachid Taha is not the first artist to blend Arab and Western musical styles, but he is certainly one of the most innovative. Born in Algeria, but residing in France since age ten, Taha fronted a highly political punk band in his teens, then made his mark as an equally radical DJ before launching a solo career. Made in Medina is the latest in his string of crossover... More creations. Recorded on three continents and four countries (U.S., U.K., France, and Morocco), utilizing musicians from equally far flung locales, and overseen by long-time producer Steve Hillage, the album is brimming with the exotic and the familiar. With lyrics in English, French, and, at one point, Berber, the sleeve notes provide English translations and explain the songs' core message and musical roots. Like a sumptuous banquet, Medina is a rich mix of dishes, one that will tempt even the most jaded palette. Inevitably, it will be branded world music, a label guaranteed to scare off much of Taha's prospective audience. There's crunching punk numbers, as hardcore as any anarcho-punk band's, but sliced with techno beats, sure to appeal to Prodigy fans. Spanish-flavored numbers are perfect for the salsa crowd, Afro-pop with a syncopated beat are sure to capture reggae fans, and there's even a space rock number for the ambient/prog rockers. With lyrical themes that run the gambit from alienation to the spiritual, Taha's appeal across genres is evident.
I've been listening to Radiohead for some time now and I believe they are truly genius.
Beautiful song:
Last Flowers (bonus track) - Thom Yorke solo <3
I've fell in love with this track ever since I listened to it. And the track is in a bonus CD of their latest album, imagine how good the actual album's songs are.
I don't think there is any band who put so much creativity and inspiration in their songs nowadays as Radiohead.
For about a year now; I've been listening, rather exclusively, to underground rock;
More specifically - melodic death metal - (<3 Insomnium, kalmah old in flames + CoB)
...and forgotten there was other great genre's of music out there. Although i still maintain my negative stance towards patronized mainstream music. ( currently )
For example i liked this song that i heard during House and googled the lyrics + Show Spoiler +
Don't get me wrong, before i listened to metal i had EVERYTHING, nearly 5 gigs of what i believe to be utter mainstream crap -I like Enimem, Tupac ( only rap artists i find tolerable, really )
alkaline trio ;a day to remember ; alesana ( i'll stop scrolling my Ipod now ) and Breaking Benjamin with death cab for cutie and all the mainstream rock groups like Linkin Park; basically anything you hear on the radio, I'd know it. - or maybe all the game/anime music from Final fantasy .hack//sign; + Show Spoiler +
- or more classics music celine dion, eagles, beetles, - Or perhaps that time i was obsessed with cello music. Apocalyptica ~ - play the cello myself actually. and more recently an influx of metal, metal core groups such as All that remains ,+ Show Spoiler +
trivium , etc.
All in all, I'd just like to thank this thread for introducing me to a lot of good things and even though i don't listen to many of the things i listed ; i just figured i post them in case anything else likes it. I did list a bunch of random cool videos in my last post that is conveniently quoted here if you want to check it out; + Show Spoiler [Myoldpost] +
If you like jazz, another fantastic soloist is Dexter Gordon. He's a tenor sax player, and when he improvises he doesn't play words or sentences. No, he plays veritable paragraphs of music. This is his group playing the standard, Blue Bossa.
This might be a bit mainstream; I don't really know. This is Bobby McFerrin performing his song, Opportunity. He likes to perform acapella, and let me tell you. His voice is pretty fucking incredible.
I listen to a lot of jazz, but one of my favorite bands is My Morning Jacket. They're an indie country rock band from Louisville, Kentucky. Please, though, don't let that turn you off immediately. I promise that if you give them a listen, then you'll be pleasantly surprised. They may play a lot of country rock, but they're fairly eclectic and aren't afraid to try new things and grow as a band. This is the lead singer doing a solo acoustic version of his song Steam Engine.
OMG, Final Fantasy is awesome! I saw him play at Bluesfest a few years ago and he put on an amazing show. I just marveled at his ability to loop his violin riffs along with singing and even other instruments. And I know it was real cause he even messes up the riffs sometimes and has to redo them
I'd recommend Elliot Smith. He's one of my favourite musicians. He has great acoustic songs done with his unique brand of finger picking (great stuff to try to learn!). He has a quiet voice and his lyrics are also quite interesting. Unfortunately, he died of a drug overdose a while back.
Here's one of my favourite songs of all time, Angeles ( a song about los angeles):
Another one I really like, Big Ballad of Nothing:
If you like soothing acoustic tunes, check him out!
Sinergy. These guys are a metal band from finland. Unfortunately they haven't been active in the past 5 years or so, but the three albums they made were freakin fantastic. They feature Alexi Laiho (Children Of Bodom) on guitar, and on the second two albums Roope Latvala (Children Of Bodom, Stone, etc) on guitar as well, and Marco Hietala (Nightwish, Tarot) on bass.
Sonata Arctica. Another metal band from finland, but if you're not into the really heavy metal stuff, you might prefer these guys. It's more fantasy-based lighter speed metal (I don't know how to properly describe it, but my description sounds like dragonforce which they are NOT like).
Opeth. These guys are really heavy, more like a black metal band. Their singer growls (as opposed to the previous two bands I posted), but it's definitely a growl rather than a scream, and personally I love it. These guys have great heavy licks, you should definitely check them out. They're pretty progressive, especially with their new stuff. If you remotely like these guys I suggest you check them out on an actual mp3 file (not youtube shit) with a good pair of headphones, as there's a lot of subtlety to their music.
ALSO I SUGGEST YOU CLICK ON THEM AND GO TO YOUTUBE AND PUT &fmt=18 AT THE END OF THE ADDRESS BAR! Only some of them actually improve the quality, but for example the opeth one is so vastly improved by this it's disgusting to listen to it on normal youtube quality.
The music video has an altered version of the song that I dislike compared to the original. I suggest you get the album instead.
I don't consider myself part of this whole "scene" they seem to represent, so I don't really recommend watching their weird videos, but this is probably my favorite band.

Alias has really changed/evolved since his MCing days. He's still one of my favorite MCs but now hes making just these ambient music tracks now (I've even heard a song on a toyota commercial or something). Some of it is decent but I miss the old Alias.
PS- Has TL evolved to good/decent music tastes or are the Metal Heads just not posting in this thread?
Toad the Wet Sprocket - folk/alternative rock band that had some limited commercial success in the early 90s. Fear and Dulcinea are both very good albums.
Devin Townsend - I'm really not sure how to define his music. His work with Strapping Young Lad is extreme metal, but his solo stuff...progressive ambient industrial rock/metal I guess?
PS- You wouldn't happen to have the Mr.Lif and Insight song called Universal. Its fairly old (99?) and Its one of my favorite nostalgic songs of that era in my life. Its story-tale lyrics are so illustrative, its just a good song. I lost it and can't find it.
edit- well here is a video: but I still want the Mp3
Personally I think Insight does better in that song. Except for; "calculated time of arrival undefined destination is knowledge, it's a trip through the mind we've been assigned to give vision to the blind who cant find their way out of the terrible bind of course our arrival has been properly timed the moon is in place, the stars are aligned Mr.. Lif (and insight) have been combined to take us all (assault?) to a higher level of rhyme"
I wouldn't place Lif anywhere near my top 30 though. There are so many better. I only ever liked this song and Pulse Cannon.

alright i downloaded it, gimme a bit so i can figure out how to use this damn thing also, as far as the grouch goes, i think yardwork and breath are his best songs, but i really didnt feel like going through youtube for ages to find them...or even try for that matter.
I love Buckethead. It's like he makes you listen to a bunch of dumb shit (the beginning of this song) and just before you figure this guy is a total hack with some fancy pedals, he busts out some fucking wild shit and basically says "by the way im really good at guitar"
This song is stupid as hell (but very amusing) until about the 2:15 mark in this video. That's when the "Buckethead is super good at guitar" part starts.

As for (relatively) newer hip-hop, I like Last Emperor. His debut album Music, Magic, Myth came out in 2003. Here is part one of his Secret Wars, Comic Book Characters vs Hip Hop Legends.

All along the river Chelmsford's army lay asleep Come to crush the Children of Mageba Come to exact the Realm's price for peace And in the morning as they saddled up to ride Their eyes shone with the fire and the steel The General told them of the task that lay ahead To bring the People of the Sky to heel Chorus Mud and sweat on polished leather Warm rain seeping to the bone They rode through the season's wet weather Straining for a glimpse of the foe Hopeless battalion destined to die Broken by the Benders of Kings Vainglorious General and Victorian pride Would cost him and eight hundred men their lives Chorus They came to the side of the mountain Scouts rode out to spy the land Even as the Realm's soldiers lay resting Mageba's forces were at hand And by the evening the vultures were wheeling Above the ruins where the fallen lay An ancient song as old as the ashes Echoed as Mageba's warriors marched away Chorus
second one was fun. But what the fucking shit was the first one jesus christ i tolerate brutal black metal vocals and a lot of crappy ones in order to get to their good music- but alas all i can say is wtf . I used to be able to say i don't mind any music besides most rap and mainstream songs, then there's that. This is my opinion of course. ;o
I love Queensryche and you will too. Probably. Operation: Mindcrime is by far one of the greatest prog releases in history. I suggest to you if you haven't already heard it that you scoop it up as soon as possible.
A funk band that was intented to make the music for a cartoon here in Chile but the proyect got rejected, They liked the music so much that the decided to make a real album of it. Plus this is one of the best music videos i have ever seen.

Started like a death metal band now they are more closer to something like pink floyd. I STRONGLY recommend you to download the album "a natural disaster".
Siam Shade
Prog Rock - Jrock. Most known as the autors of one of the endings of samurai x. Great guitars.
