The reason 4 is considered unlucky in Japanese is the word for 4 is "shi" which also sounds like "death" in Japanese. So, you don't give gifts with 4's in them. They actually have another word, "yon", which can also be used for 4.

in chinese its the same way, "4" is "si" which sounds like death (also "si" but a different tone)

lucky is 8 (ba) which sounds like the word for prosperity

As mentioned before by koreans/japanese, the 4 can be pronounced smialrly as death. Korean and Japanese is originated from Chinese...
