RIO DE JANEIRO — Federal prosecutors in Brazil on Tuesday charged the American journalist Glenn Greenwald with cybercrimes for his role in the spreading of cellphone messages that have embarrassed prosecutors and tarnished the image of an anti-corruption task force.

In a criminal complaint made public on Tuesday, prosecutors in the capital, Brasília, accused Mr. Greenwald of being part of a “criminal organization” that hacked into the cellphones of several prosecutors and other public officials last year.

Mr. Greenwald could not immediately be reached for comment.

The Intercept Brasil, a news organization Mr. Greenwald co-founded, has published several articles based on a trove of leaked messages he said he received last year.

In a 95-page criminal complaint, prosecutors say Mr. Greenwald did more than merely receive the hacked messages and oversee the publication of newsworthy information.

Citing intercepted messages between Mr. Greenwald and the hackers, prosecutors say the journalist played a “clear role in facilitating the commission of a crime.”

For instance, prosecutors contend that Mr. Greenwald encouraged the hackers to delete archives that had already been shared with The Intercept Brasil, in order to cover their tracks.

Prosecutors also say that Mr. Greenwald was communicating with the hackers while they were actively monitoring private chats on Telegram, a messaging app.

Mr. Greenwald moved to Brazil in 2005 after meeting David Miranda, a Brazilian man he later married and who became a federal congressman last year.

Mr. Greenwald became widely known for his role in the release of classified national security documents leaked by the former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden in 2013. He co-founded The Intercept Brasil in 2016.

After The Intercept Brasil began publishing articles based on the leaked cellphone chats last June, Mr. Greenwald became a deeply polarizing figure in Brazil’s bitter political divide.

The articles raised questions about the integrity, professionalism and motives of key members of Brazil’s justice system — particularly of figures directly involved in the investigation of a vast corruption scheme that resulted in the imprisonment of powerful business and political figures.

Among the revelations in the articles, for instance, were chats in which Sérgio Moro, a former federal judge who handled the prosecution of former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2017, provided strategic guidance to prosecutors, in violation of legal and ethical norms. Mr. Moro is now Brazil’s justice minister.

He better move to a country that doesn't extradite to Brazil/the US or he's probably going to die in (or on the way to) a lifetime in prison.

Patiently awaiting JimmiC dropping in to explain to us how Glenn should have just done his best to not do cyber crimes if he wanted to not get arrested by the Brazilian government.

Is it really necessary to namecheck another user out of the blue like this? What purpose does this post serve?

Not really supporting Maduro, but Spain is at best ignoring Guaido and at worst undermining him.
Pedro Sanchez refuses to meet him and recognize him as the legitimate president, like other european countries because a faction of his government supports Maduro ("Podemos" leaded by Pablo Iglesias). Dirty talk says they even got financing from Venezuela in the past, but I haven't researched enough on it to comment.

This has caused "VOX", Spain's most right wing party to hold a rally to support Guaido as legitimate president and Venezuela's freedom and democracy.

Means to an end.

This "anti-corruption" force is nothing but reaaaaaaaally bad meme that can be summarized with this image:

They are just attacking with all their resources what they consider (and can fool the lowest common denominator) "left-wing" to hide and detract attention from their mistakes.

The comedy increases as there are ex-reality shows participants, youtubers and bloggers who actually believe on fanfics that goes as far as saying that feminists killed more than the two World Wars and it goes downhill from there.

There are even meme Facebook pages who lists what was called communist (a lot of brazillians are living a Cold War on their heads), fast foods and even Netflix is involved xD.

Election experts writing for WaPo have shown that OAS claims of election fraud are simply not supported by the statistical evidence and rely on unreliable assumptions, that if applied to US elections, would indicate massive election fraud.

... We and other scholars within the field reached out to the OAS for comment; the OAS did not respond.

...

There isn’t statistical support for the claims of vote fraud

There is not any statistical evidence of fraud that we can find — the trends in the preliminary count, the lack of any big jump in support for Morales after the halt, and the size of Morales’s margin all appear legitimate. All in all, the OAS’s statistical analysis and conclusions would appear deeply flawed.

We've got news here that Bolsonaro tested positive for coronavirus (1st test), right after coming back from the US for talks with Trump at Mar-a-Lago. Another member of his cabinet has already more conclusively tested positive.

Presumably, the infection ocurred while there, as only now things are taking off here. This raises some flags about whether Trump and co might also be infected.

(interesting that there are 3 different threads where I could have posted this)
