Sure, W3 reforged might carry them for a short while, but it's just a rehash of an old stuff. Diablo Immortal was a shot to the foot and it's going to backfire on them severely.
There is absolutely nothing going on for them at the moment. Instead of doing stuff that would actually get the hype train going and bring back a lot of the fan base (like announcing the StarCraft: Ghost) they just rehash old stuff (W3R and WoWC) and try to hit the Chinese mobile market (which is totally not their audience). It seems like all the creativity is gone from them and I don't think they can sustain like that for long.
And speaking of rehashes, D2 remaster would be an instant smash hit.
WoW C will probably make a lot of money. Have several friends going back for that. I'm considering joining them but likely won't in the end since I've never played WoW at all.
The overall point I agree with though. Since 2012 they have released OW and a few expansions to current games or remakes. That is 7 years with 1 new title.

What an incredible comeback story Warframe has become. It looks like Bungie is positioning Destiny to compete directly with Warframe.

Warframe is interesting. 5 times the player numbers as at release. Not many games go in that direction.

Warframe has a good development team who stays in touch with it's community and caters to their needs, while changing systems and adding new ones in such a way that keeps the game fresh while not taking out stuff that people like for the sake of it being old. I haven't seen a team as competent as they are in a long time. They're also quite open and frank when talking to the community, which increases player engagement with the developers, providing a better feedback loop and making it seem like they genuinely care about what they have to say.
The only thing I have a problem with in the game is the time investment, but it certainly does help with a feeling of progression when things are time gated, and they've made sure there's almost always something you'll be able to do while you wait for stuff to build or while you're grinding mastery ranks. Some games miss that part when time gating things. It's far more palatable this way.
It also speaks for the importance of word of mouth marketing when you see how many people have come to the game over the years. People get their friends into it all the time, because it's a genuinely good game. The longevity of a game can really be bolstered by this, as long as the product is actually good.

Played this a few years ago I think. Maybe it's comeback time
Have you guys read about Facebook getting serious? Rumors are they bought exclusives for a Splinter Cell VR game and a Assassins Creed VR game

Eh, think I am still waiting another generation for VR. Mostly since my hardware doesn't really support it well.

just spit-balling here... during the summer time of a booming economy with aging consoles... video game sales should experience a big decline? right?

Videogame sales drop by double digits again in June
Videogame sales continued a double-digit downturn in June, with across-the-board declines contributing to a 13% drop from last year.
Sales fell overall to $959M from last June's $1.1B, according to NPD Group. Hardware sales were again a drag, falling 33% to $235M, but were joined in the doldrums by software (which dipped 1% to $386M) and accessories/game cards, which fell by 7% to $338M.
That deepens a year-to-date spending gap, now down 4% from the same period in 2018, to $5.6B, with hardware the drag over that time frame.
The best-selling hardware platform for the month was again the Nintendo Switch (OTCPK:NTDOY), and it's also the only platform showing year-over-year growth, analyst Mat Piscatella notes.
In software, Super Mario Maker 2 (OTCPK:NTDOY) topped the dollar sales chart with the best debut of a Mario Maker title. It was followed by Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled (NASDAQ:ATVI) and last month's leader, Mortal Kombat 11 (NYSE:T), which is still 2019's best-seller so far.
Rounding out the top 10: No. 4, Grand Theft Auto V (NASDAQ:TTWO); No. 5, Minecraft; No. 6, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (OTCPK:NTDOY); No. 7, Marvel's Spider-Man (NYSE:SNE); No. 8, NBA 2K19 (TTWO); No. 9, Mario Kart 8 (OTCPK:NTDOY); No. 10, Days Gone (SNE).
Related tickers with after-hours moves: OTCPK:NTDOY flat, SNE +0.8%, MSFT +2.7%, EA flat, ATVI +0.2%, TTWO flat, T +0.2%, OTCPK:UBSFY, OTC:NCBDY, OTCPK:SQNNY, OTCPK:CCOEY, OTCPK:SGAMY. Retail stock: GME flat.
congratz to Nintendo. IMO, their success is very well earned. The Nintendo Switch is f'n awesome.

Why wouldn't hardware sales drop? Consoles is a few years old by now (apart from Switch) and on PC side a 5-6 year old PC can play most new games on medium still. To compound that on PC a lot of people still play older games such as Dota, Warframe, Starcraft or pretty much any MMO.

Does this account for mobile games?

True. My pc is from 2012 with 8 gigs of ram and Intel I5 processor and the only thing i've upgraded is the graphics card to a GTX 970 and i can still play most games in medium graphics with good FPS. Most games i play as well came out several years ago such as those you mentioned. I don't see a reason to upgrade because those games i play work fine with my current hardware, it works fine still.

Are PCs even in the video game sales statistic? If yes, how do they decide which PCs are video game PCs and which are "doing other things" PCs? Both strong graphics cards and fast processors can be used for other stuff.
And i don't find it very surprising that less consoles are sold in a year during which no new console came out. I am pretty sure that the further you get from the last new console, the less stuff is being sold.
Software lost 1%, which is basically nothing and probably within the margin of error of any reasonable analysis.

In 2003, Frank Pearce was part of a group of developers in attendance to sign merchandise and greet fans at the midnight launch of Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne at the Fry's Electronics in Sunnyvale. I was waiting in line with friends for hours before the doors finally opened. When they did, we gradually moved through the store at a snail's pace as the line snaked around designated aisles. Just before the cash registers, they had some folding tables arranged in a line where you could pick up swag like T-shirts and posters and get them signed by the developers who were seated just a few feet ahead. Since the line was moving slowly, there was more than enough time to get everything signed by each developer and even have a small chat with them. I believe at the Sunnyvale Fry's there were a couple of artists, one of the engineers, and one guy named Frank Pearce who I don't remember having a title. I remember not knowing what it was that he did, but I was gradually walking past him, passing along my shirt and game box for signatures as I was engaged with one of the artists about something inane like "what's your favorite part of the game to draw?". I never learned who Frank Pearce was until years later, when Blizzard started writing some of their retrospectives, and it hit me what a missed opportunity it was to pick the brain of one of the founders. He was just this unassuming, somewhat quiet guy at the end of a line of developers who handed my T-shirt and game box back to me and simply said, "We hope you enjoy the game. We're really proud of this one." Apparently that's just him in a nutshell.

its sad to see another pillar of Blizzard leave. i wonder if guys like Pierce and Morhaime are under the same "2 year non-compete after leaving" deal as Pardo?

So, it seems that Bethesda shot itself in the foot again with Wolfenstein: Youngblood. A piece of shit game and they won't even fix the worst issues and bugs but will patch the ingame store (for a single player game)... Bethesda must really hate their consumers.
|
Gotta always have the store working. Can't have a game where you buy the game and then have the game anymore. Constant user engagement! Recurring user spending!
Sadly, Bethesda is mostly good at making single player games which you buy once and then play. But executives hate those games. So they try to make Bethesda make "life services".
Have you seen that clip of Todd Howard talking about how people are still playing Skyrim and Fallout 4, and you can just see how mad it makes him that he has no way of getting money from those people? (Here is the clip on the Jimquisition, no idea where it is originally from)
The game industry hates it when you just buy a game. They want constant money from you. Thus, they make their games worse just to be able to get more "recurring user spending"
I gotta say that i am mostly disgusted at this shit, and that it is not going away. This basically means that i can currently only buy indie games, because all of the big studios try to get away from just having a game. And i like just having a game and playing it without someone constantly pestering me to give them more of my money.

Because that is how you make absurd amounts of money. You can rake in shitloads of cash by making your game worse, then demanding to be paid to make it less bad. Rational thought has nothing to do with this, just pure greed. Executives see others making all the money through microtransactions and loot boxes, and they get annoyed, because just making some money with a good game is not good enough. If others are making more money than you are, you are losing. Thus, you need to do the thing that makes the other guy more money.
