Just wanted to briefly indicate my admiration for jasmine crockett. Is there some kinda leftist purity test she fails? Haven’t looked into her much but she’s got the energy I think the left needs right now

Pleasantly surprised here, even if it’s broken clock stuff, or a matter of some folks finding a backbone out of nowhere.

Canada successfully enforced their mild Canadian content laws effectively. It can be done. It is a slow, careful, judicious process. Many politicians on many levels of government from both sides of the aisle were 100% in alignment with enforcing them. If everyone in the USA gets on board it can work.

Instead of Sesame Street ... Canada had The Hilarious House of Frightenstein. It was way better than Sesame Street.

One problem is that everyone can just pirate everything. With 80" TVs being under $500 any one can have the theatre experience at home. Anyone can just create their own movie nights. Who needs a theatre?

That's bunk. The Canadian film industry was fairly anemic until we started becoming a production location for Hollywood.
I can remember Sesame Street. I've never heard of Frightenstein until today.

When we used to have video stores, American films were not categorized as foreign films. We inhale American culture. Maybe the only place it was truly successful was on the radio due to enforced CanCon percentages. There's been a few hit shows out of CBC like he Red-Green Show, but these days the best Can-Con comes up independent of all that those protective rules (Letterkenny).

Me either. I do remember mr dressup, littlest hobo, reboot, some cartoons once I got YTV. And some shows like T and T, cold squad, due south and Da Vinci's inquest and of course SCTV reruns. But the production was always questionable.

You know have Schitt's creek along with letterkenny, Totally agree with oyur overall point, just wanted to throw out some more gems because I had also never heard of House of Frightenstein, maybe just not old enough since wiki says it came out 1 season (130 episodes WTF?) in 1971.

Yeah, to be fair there are some other Canadian productions I can recall from my childhood like Fred Penner and Mr Dressup.
But the reality is our production was a small drop in a giant ocean of US content that inundates Canadian culture.

I don't know that I have met an American that heard of a Canadian show, whereas we know their shows as well as they do.

The family of insurrectionist traitor Ashli Babbitt are getting a $30m payout after Trump intervened and instructed the DOJ to settle. It was ruled a lawful shooting and self defence at the time but whatever.

In other news two Wells Fargo execs were found to be responsible for the fake accounts scandal and were fined $8.5m in January. Then a Wells Fargo linked PAC donated a million to Trump’s re-election fund and the fines were cut to $150k for unrelated reasons.

This shit is why Mario’s brother is going to get out of hand. If you piss in the social contract pool over and over then nobody will want to swim in it anymore.

Carney did a nice job today.

That said, Alberta makes more noise about separating than they ever have while the Parti Quebecois cheers them on. Same day, another Ontario Auto Manufacturing plant shuts down.

I wish Carney all the luck ... But Canada is fucked.

*Lives in Alberta*

*Has literally never heard a single person here talk with even a tiny fraction of interest about Alberta separating in the last 15 years*

*Is reminiscing about how this fucking JimmyJ moron was recently posting about how right now isn't an existential threat to Canada*

*Is also remembering how he was yelling at billy for not having been IN MONTREAL in 1994 therefore billy doesn't know anything about how real Quebec seceding was*

*Is noting the irony vis-a-vis JimmyJ not living in Alberta*

Hey, can you like... leave forever?

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week...

Before Teacher Appreciation Day, which is celebrated on Tuesday as part of Teacher Appreciation Week, the administration has slashed professional development initiatives, preparation programs, and other federally funded education projects that the administration has deemed as divisive and run afoul of its priorities. Melissa Collins, who was Tennessee’s Teacher of the Year in 2023, said professional learning grants through the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) made her a better teacher. ... However -- like many federal education awards -- the NEH grant was terminated by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and the programming is no longer offered due to the administration’s “shifting priorities,” according to a termination notice reviewed by ABC News. “As teachers, we strive to improve for our students, but currently, budget cuts are affecting the experiences that empower teachers to serve their schools and communities effectively,” Collins wrote in a statement to ABC.

Educators for Excellence (E4E) released new survey results today that reveal mounting concern among teachers in response to the Trump administration’s actions in its first 100 days and its proposed billions of dollars in cuts to federal education funding. Now in its eighth year, Voices from the Classroom is a nationally representative survey that captures educators’ perspectives on the state of public education. Only 29% of teachers feel optimistic about the Trump administration’s impact on education—a nearly 20-point drop since January. Additionally, 70% of educators oppose efforts to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. Teachers—including those who identify as Republican—also support existing policies and programs that President Trump has repeatedly attacked: 92% support federal funding for Title I and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), 88% support the use of culturally relevant teaching materials, and 84% favor protections for students against discrimination based on gender and sexual identity. “The message from teachers is clear: Trump’s education agenda, including the billions of dollars in cuts he proposed last week, will not move American K-12 public education forward,” said Evan Stone, co-founder and CEO of Educators for Excellence. “Teachers stand defiantly in opposition to President Trump’s actions not because of his political ideology, but because his words and policies harm students, teachers, and the future of public education.”

Teachers reject the Trump administration’s education agenda across the board:
Between 70% and 92% oppose each of the administration’s education priorities included in the poll.

The Trump Administration’s Actions Since January 2025
Since taking office in January 2025, the Trump administration has taken the following actions:
• Eliminated $900 million in research projects and program evaluations financed by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES)
• Rescinded regulations providing protections against discrimination for LGBTQ+ students, and issued Executive Orders (EOs) that threaten funding for schools who support transgender students
• Revoked guidance that prevented Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from entering school buildings
• Threatened to cut funding for schools that teach about racial or gender identity or that use “race as a factor in … hiring, training, and other … programming.”
• Issued an EO calling for the elimination of the U.S. Department of Education
• Directed the U.S. Department of Education (USED) to issue guidance on how federal funding can be used in voucher programs that include private schools
• Revoked previously granted extensions in the length of time allowed to spend COVID-19 federal relief money on previously planned projects
• Issued an EO calling on the U.S. Department of Education to revoke guidance intended to reduce disproportionate exclusionary discipline of student of color
Additionally, during his first presidency, he proposed eliminating the PSLF program that forgives loans for public school teachers and other public service workers. He also repeatedly introduced or endorsed budgets that dramatically reduced education funding, including Title I.

How mad would Trump get if the leaders of Canada started dropping hints/jokes that the United States should totally become a new province or territory of theirs?

FTFY. Funding to "teachers" sounds like teachers are just upset that they might be fired or paid less.
