New pope led order dedicated to the poor and service
By PETER SMITH

The new pope was formerly the prior general, or leader, of the Order of St. Augustine, formed in the 13th century as a community of “mendicant” friars dedicated to poverty, service and evangelization.

The order’s requirements and ethos are traced to the fifth century St. Augustine of Hippo, one of the theological and devotional giants of early Christianity.

The order works in about 50 countries, according to its website, promoting a contemplative spirituality, communal living and service to others.

What to know:

Who is Robert Prevost? The former pope, Francis, brought Prevost, 69, to the Vatican in 2023 to serve as the powerful head of the office that vets bishop nominations from around the world, one of the most important jobs in the Catholic Church. As a result, Prevost has a prominence going into the conclave that few other cardinals had.

How was the new pope chosen? 135 eligible cardinals participated in a secretive voting process known as “the conclave.” The cardinals had no contact with the outside world, and their votes will not be revealed.

Which cardinals were the leading contenders? There are never official candidates for the papacy, but some cardinals were considered “papabile,” or possessing the characteristics necessary to become pope. Some names include Pietro Parolin, who oversaw the conclave, Luis Tagle, dubbed the “Asian Francis,” Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, a conservative cardinal native to the Congo, and Pierbattista Pizzaballa, potentially the first Italian pope in decades.

What’s the difference between Mohammed and a Catholic Priest? One is actually open about fucking 9 year olds.Oh we’re just so edgy! And like, absolutely afraid to make jokes about that Prophet.

See, that joke DPB was actually quite clever as well, and not bad-natured or being a dick to Catholics too.

It basically ticked all the boxes that shit one I pulled out of my arse did not.

It could be, most of us mature adults grew out of making fun of religious people before we hit 20. Possibly. I don’t know.

I’ve even less inclination to make fun of Muslim beliefs because they’ve already got mouth breathers like Reform voters in my country breathing down their necks.

In the Western world if there’s a phrase, or variant thereof ‘you can’t say x anymore’ that is less untrue, I’ve yet to see it.

If explanation is required, which apparently it is the ‘as a Protestant I’ll allow it’ was a tongue in cheek invocation of Northern Irish sectarianism.

To anyone even vaguely, or in my case intimately familiar the idea of a (serious) Protestant being some arbiter of taste on such a joke is, unbelievably ridiculous, given they frequently say much, much worse.

And for some reason people are out there (including Jimmy here) celebrating a very vague trade deal that is basically just pulling back a bunch of tariffs Trump enacted for no reason at all (since UK has a trade deficit with US even if we don't include services) and that has not been ratified by either parliament or congress and does absolutely nothing except introduce exemptions to things that weren't there before Trump and leaves the 10 % flat rate that everyone gets.

The reporting has no details on what concessions US is getting and yet the vibe markets are responding positively to it.

Just shows that as far as markets go, nothing really makes sense anymore, this China news will be suppressed or spinned and number will go up, just like TSLA after their terrible earnings report.

And this is why I don't invest, plenty of land around here I can buy and plant shit in.
So, are you a pessimist? - On my better days. Are you a nihilist? - Not as much as I should be.

Yes lol. You clearly didn't understand what I wrote. The pun is a math joke; it's not a jab at the Pope. I'm also an atheist, like you, and this has nothing to do with atheism vs. Christianity vs. Islam. If any religious leader had a background in mathematics, then we could use the same reference angles. This isn't just inoffensive; I consider it to be complimentary (as opposed to supplementary). I suppose at this point it's rather derivative, but let me integrate the proper math explanation into my post, to help you differentiate between math puns and religious attacks:

There are six main trigonometric functions: sine, cosine, tangent, cosecant, secant, and cotangent. The most well-known are the first three (the last three are reciprocals of the first three). The three-letter abbreviations sin, cos, and tan are often used when writing out trigonometric equations: "sin" is short for "sine", "cos" is short for "cosine", and "tan" is short for "tangent".

When I said that the Pope understands sin, I turned "sin" into a double-meaning: Not only does the Pope understand traditional Biblical morality, but he also understands trigonometry because he has a math degree. It'd be like saying that he'd get especially bold "tan" lines if he went to the beach, or that he's so generous that he's happy to "cosine" my student loans.

Have a wonderful day

Isn't that plot about a toxic work enviroment real estate agency that ultimatively manages to lose all leads to competition and will face lawsuits over malpractice and business fraud?

I mean the real goal is to make money of people who don't have money to buy land.. so it's building up the mentality of the biggest financial crisis of this century.

Trump already said he made 90 deals in 90 days.

Then he upped it to 200 deals- not saying with whom.

Then the goons needed to downplay. It's 200 sub-deals within many deals considering certain goods.

Or even 200 sub-deal proposals that haven't been closed at all but think about.

The real news is with enough people clapping and giving him attention, he walks back his tariff idea.

Dow still down 4000 pts (or 10%) from Trump waving his tariff-dick around.

If he could just stop it completely, it will go up again.

250 points out of 40,000+ points isn't significant. Trump cratered the Dow Jones (by thousands of points) and the S&P500 one month ago. Now they've finally recovered to be about as high as they were two months ago, which is still worse than they were three months ago. The stock market's volatility and lack of success during Trump's second term should not be counted as a win for him, but for all I know he might brag about deporting cancer-stricken American children too.

I suspect the tension between ICE/Police and society is going to reach a high during the summer with confrontations like this only escalating.

I am told machismos are ever so manly and are totally capable of defending their communities. Perhaps they could try to approach the level of toughness seen by Black Panthers. Machismos could form their own movement to protect their communities the same way Black People did when they needed to.

I think machismo is just a bunch of bullshit insecurity. But I'd love to be proven wrong!

Someone needs to start a social media movement to inform machismos of how manly black men were and how well they defended their communities. The racism and insecurity among machismos will compel them to form their own version of Black Panthers overnight.

ICE has existed for 20 years and has arrested and deported millions of people. ICE deported 271,000 people during Biden's last year in office which is the most since the record high of 316,000 during Obama's second term. Why is this arrest in Massachusetts so much more deplorable than the 600,000 in the 2 years I mentioned or the millions of others? Is it just because it happened across your twitter feed?

Because they're weaponizing ICE against students exercising free speech, violating due process, deporting citizens, leveraging wartime and national emergency powers when neither are occurring, etc.

It's the crowd of people asking for identification and ICE agents response among various other reports about people calling ICE to settle personal grievances, masked agents, law enforcement pretty regularly breaking into the wrong houses, people pretending to be ICE to commit crimes, etc. Things also tend to heat up in the Summer, literally and metaphorically.

But I'm one that was appalled by kids in cages under Obama too.

the Obama administration Friday again defended family detention as necessary to send a message to Central American families that they are not welcome here—even though it concedes that most of them are fleeing persecution.

Those are good points. But that's also what I'm getting at. If you want to make the argument that Trump has brought ICE to a new level of nazi police or whatever you should be focusing specifically on escalations. Showing an instance of something that happened 271,000 times under Biden's last year and screaming "omg they're nazis now!" only weakens your argument.
