I know Elon has been drinking the crazy juice for awhile now, but he just threw away the dog whistle and came straight out. I wonder what Ivanka and Jared think of that one. Maybe we'll see an ugly split between Trump and Musk. It isn't just one freeze frame. Look at the clip. It is just Musk doing the Hitler salute. Twice in a row.

Indeed, although for me it’s not really a big deal at all in the wider scheme of things. It’s either him doing his chief cringe shitposter shtick, or a real ‘fuck you if youre gonna call us Nazis watch this’ It’s the stuff he actually does, or positions he’s serious on that worry me. Indeed it may be a positive thing as it seems to be grabbing a ton of negative attention. People for whom Musk generally isn’t on their radar, or a segment of the ‘I’m sticking my fingers in my ears I can’t hear you’ crowd, well Sieg Heiling at a Presidential Inauguration punches pretty damn deep in terms of media penetration. Not to hand wave it or be contrarian about it, it’s obviously not ideal to have folks dandering about giving such salutes. I just don’t think it ranks even close to the top of some of the egregious shit he’s been doing in recent times. But hey if this is the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back and gets them paying attention to the other stuff, better late than never I suppose.

Had me going ![]() I actually wouldn't be surprised if it came out that he was dared on 4 chan and thought it would be cool or something equally stupid. No matter the reason it should disqualify him from everything government related. He is either not a serious person you want doing serious things, or the more likely that he loves the Nazi's and think they actually did a lot of good things.

It's not so much about the relative egregiousness of the act, as it is a milestone in the Overton window. The reason people act like in the video Kwark posted, espousing fascist ideas without openly identifying as one, is because there are (were?) social consequences for it. If Elon unmistakably gestures that Nazism is cool while the whole world is watching him in a performance he no doubt repeated 50 times in his head before heading to the stage, and he faces no real social repercussions for it (boycotts, mass resignations, divestment, etc) that would mean that his assumption about where the window currently lies (or rather can be pushed) is correct.

Its shameful were gonna have to do it again, but maybe this time we won't be so gracious. Noticing a lot of problems are from being nice to really bad people, should've cracked down harder on the Confederate South post war, should have cracked down harder on the Nazis.

Well put. Perhaps the reaction being a resigned, depressed shrug on my part is down to some rare common ground with Musk on sharing an assessment of where the window currently is. I mean it’s nothing new, those with the ears attuned to dog whistle frequencies have been aware for years, and plenty have thrown out warnings, often to be accused of hysterical hyperbole. In more recent times the dog whistles have been put away and folks are just outright saying the quiet part out loud, to a rather similar lack of consequences.
