Team Liquid and Former Curse Become One

Message from Liquid`Nazgul

Hey, everyone.

Today, I'm making the biggest announcement of my career. It's a huge day, both for Team Liquid as an organization, and for myself on a personal level.

I'm writing this from my perspective; you can get the other side if you click the orange link above.

From this moment onward, myself and Steve Arhancet — the owner of the organization previously known as Curse Gaming — will go forward as co-owners in Team Liquid. All teams previously known as Curse Gaming will now compete under the Liquid name.

This means Team Liquid now has a League of Legends team, and will be competing in LCS. On top of that, we will be fielding a Challenger team for LoL. For our Smash division, HungryBox and Chillindude will be joining up with Ken and KDJ, while Nuckledu will be representing us in Street Fighter.

And this is only the beginning. You can expect plenty more from Team Liquid soon enough.

Before I go any further, it is important to point out that the organization known as ‘Curse Gaming’ and the company called Curse Inc. are completely separate entities. This past year, Curse Inc. was the title sponsor of Curse Gaming. Curse Inc.'s title sponsorship ended last year, and what Steve and I are embarking upon has no relation to Curse Inc.

The message here needs to be clear as day: What we're doing is no ordinary partnership. It's not Team Liquid becoming the new title sponsors of an LCS team. This is the full-blown merging of two organizations under the Team Liquid banner.

Steve originally approached me as he planned for the future of his organization heading into 2015. At that point, he had been running Curse eSports for three years, building it from the ground up into an LCS powerhouse. While I didn’t know much about his team, I knew they were known for treating their players well, and investing heavily into improving their squads.

I did have a good impression of Steve himself — Savjz had always spoken very highly of him, and he had acted with the utmost professionalism when Liquid acquired Savjz from Curse eSports’ HearthStone team. When he asked to schedule a mystery call, I was intrigued by what he might have to say.

I was very surprised, at first, when the idea to combine our two organizations came up. But as we continued to talk, it all started to make more and more sense.

Our two organizations complemented each other very well, whether it was players, teams, sponsors or staff.

We had become accomplished and well-known in games such as StarCraft, Dota2, and HearthStone, but hadn’t broken into the vast market of League of Legends. Meanwhile, Steve’s organization had grown to become one of the most popular teams in all of LoL.

The Liquid brand had become one of the most respected and recognized in esports, while Steve’s organization found itself with a lot of fans who no longer had a name to get behind.

Where our staff had picked up experience in areas such as creating written content and managing a large community, Steve’s team brought skills we had been looking for, among which a great video team.

Our two organizations didn’t just complement each other with our different strengths — we could combine to become more than the sum of our parts. Together we could become more complete, stronger organization.

On a personal level, Steve and I got along really well. We shared similar opinions on the direction we wanted our organizations to go and the values we wanted them to stand for. This is something that was really important to both of us. If we hadn’t shared the same principles, we couldn’t have gone through with this decision — no matter how much sense it would have made otherwise.

After extensive discussion with Steve, I knew there was only one decision I could make.

Up until now, I’d thought it impossible to make this kind of choice for Liquid and myself. I can scarcely believe it even now, but what else can I say? That's just how well our respective ideals meshed.

Finally, I have to mention the incredible coincidence of Steve's ID being LiQuiD112. I'm not one to read into signs, but seriously...

Everything made a lot of sense from an organizational and logistical perspective, but that still doesn't fully answer why I've decided to merge Liquid with another organization.

I can proudly say Liquid is held in high esteem in the esports industry, and people have come to expect the best from us. However, we've found it difficult to compete with teams like EG or Cloud9 for the top players and teams in the world.

Together, our organization will be able to achieve much more than what we could have separately. While we always had every intention to find a Dota team, the merger pushes us that much closer to achieving that goal.

Of course, there are a lot of variables that go into picking up a Dota team. What I can say to our Dota fans — and I know you're still out there — is that we are in the best position we've been in to recruit a Dota2 team worthy of the Liquid name.

Across all games, Liquid is better equipped than ever to attract new recruits and treat our players better. We're able to cater better to our sponsors, and are able to provide better conditions for our staff. By doing all of this, we place ourselves right among the largest esports teams in the world.

I've always aspired for Team Liquid to be an integral part of esports, and for it to continue to grow as esports develops. Now, those ambitions can come to fruition.

Introducing LiquidLegends.net

We've always had a motivated and skilled writing staff for League of Legends, but were never able to provide them with a standalone site -- until now. We’ve had a lot of internal discussions about the topic before, and there were several reasons we decided against it in the past, yet we never completely ruled out the possibility. Now that we have a highly regarded team in LCS, we find ourselves with the perfect opportunity to finally start a news and community website for League of legends.

We come to you with a brand new design for the LoL site, which takes the best parts of the traditional TeamLiquid.net layout, and streamlines it all into a new, more modern design.

We have an incredible staff for the new site, an amazing team consisting of lots of motivated writers, who will be headed by Chexx and Fionn.

Chexx has been a key part of TeamLiquid.net’s LoL section for some time now. Based in Seoul, South Korea, he's never stopped reporting breaking news from the mecca of esports. He's been an important source of LoL information and advice for me — which even led to some brief interest in acquiring Unicorns of Love last year. Chexx has done a lot for TeamLiquid-LoL, and I’m very happy he will be able to continue his work on LiquidLegends.net.

Of all the staff TL.net has had over the past 13 years, Fionn is one of the most talented writers we’ve had the pleasure of working with. After discovering us during our Brood War days, he became one of our marquee writers for StarCraft 2. His interest later shifted to League of Legends, and many of you will know him from his work on LoLesports.com. We're glad to have him back on board, and look forward to the quality articles he will put out with the rest of the writing staff.

Going Forward

As I mentioned, we're going forward together as Team Liquid. With Steve and I running it from the top, the rest of our staff have already started the process of working together. It's going very well so far, and we're already getting some great work done. The launch of our stand-alone LiquidLegends.net site is only a taste of what is to come.

I'm so thankful to everyone who contributed to getting us here. Team Liquid over the years has had hundreds upon hundreds of volunteers. When we covered BW for 10 years straight, nobody made a single dime -- it was all for the passion we had for that game. What we did in those years is what brought us the good name and reputation we have today, and I could not be more proud and grateful for that.

I want to thank our sponsors HyperX, Razer, Twitch NEEDforSEAT, and ShinyThings for their continued support of Liquid. I’d also like to welcome to G2A, Alienware, LoL-Class, Nissan, Quest Nutrition, and Lootcrate, who we look forward to representing going forward.

In particular, I want to give Razer my gratitude for being with us since the first day I went looking for sponsors for our professional team. Even before that, they were a part of our very first TSL tournament in 2008. We have grown so much together and I am so appreciative of everything you have done for us.

Finally, I want to say thank you to all our fans. Whether it was through good times or bad, for just a single tournament run or for our entire history, it's thanks to you that we are able to make this announcement today. I hope that in the future we will continue to be a team that you are proud to support.

Hey Guys,

I wanted to put together a short video to help share my thoughts about the merger between Curse eSports and Team Liquid. It was a pretty challenging time towards the end of 2014 with all the things that were happening: Voyboy leaving the team, finding a new mid laner, the expansion tournament, and of course, our announcement to rebrand for the 2015 season. After everything is set and done, however, I believe that teaming up with Victor and his amazing organization was the best decision that I could have made. There are many changes coming soon and you'll slowly start to see everything unfold in the days and weeks to come. I'm super excited for all the new things we have planned for Team Liquid and I hope you share my enthusiasm!

You all probably have a ton of questions. Hopefully my video helps clarify those things up for you!

I don't follow League at all but I love Team Liquid and this is pretty exciting news. Huge announcement with the Curse deal and hyped to see you pick up such good players for Smash!

I might even go watch some LCS to see the new Liquid squad in action?

I am curious if this means additional sponsors are in bound (I assume they must be)

Plus even I can't find anything negative to say about the smash team.

its different and therefore scary and i dont like it. I hope i can keep posting from the main tl site in the future so i never have to change or learn anything new. But overall i'm glad the writers are getting more recognition (maybe hopefully) and that my favorite site has a sister site that is oriented around my favorite game... kinda?

Anti lol isn't accurate, not interested is the term that would be closest to accurate, given that they only covered games that they had staff members interested in covering. Which is why they branched out to hearth stone dota and smash before lol.

I hate Curse Inc and don't like rooting against teams/players just because they are wearing the Curse logo but can't help it. So from that perspective this is great news. Sounds great from many other perspectives as well.

i have mixed feelings about this. it's yet another symptom of TL dissolving in a sea of games I don't care about and probably never will. well, it is a little hypocritical to want TL to stay an SC2 site when for many people, that already was a big shift away from the BW they loved, but that doesn't mean I can't feel that way. also this act per se is not the cause, but it is a big symbol. yes, we still have the great folks who write about SC2, the LR cool boys' club and a squad of loveable pros, but it just feels like a shadow of its former self and that's mainly because so many people left for other games...

I don't think Liquid will let TI5 go by without a team in the mix, especially now with this partnership. Prize pool and exposure is getting too big to ignore for most serious esports teams.

Hm, with EG being bought out by Twitch/Amazon, I wonder if Liquid growing this big will lead to a sale later down the line. But really, which organization is interested in Esports and has big enough pockets to support Liquid?

How big of a passive aggressive crybaby does somebody have to get mad because an esports team didnt find the time/budget/resources to get involved in their esport of choice?

Nah monte is right in this case. TL was anti lol for a very long time. Do you know how long it took them to even acknowledge that LoL world finals was going on and to feature that stream on the side bar? I remember cause I used to joke about it with a friend about how much TL wanted to pretend that LoL didn't even exist. Their staff was very pro dota 2 and anti lol because they liked dota 2 more to play.

There's a typo in the second section. It says "along which" where it should say "along WITH".

I hope Curse also brings proofreaders to the team.

Yeah, and I am a huge cs fan and you don't see me complaining that csgo on liquid is limited to a single thread in the 'other games' section. Different sites gravitate towards different games.

No, it's a different situation because CS:Go is a different genre. It had more to do with Dota 2 vs LoL because the staff was very pro dota 2 because they enjoyed it more and you know about the dota 2 vs lol wars between the 2 groups. Was no different with the TL staff.

Google comes to mind immediately.

But Google has never expressed an interest in Esports. At least to the best of my knowledge. I would expect them to fix their copyright claims system for gaming videos before venturing out into Esports.

Twitch heavily featured and promoted Esports content on their site for years before making the most sensible purchase of EG, probably the most profitable, well-funded, sustainable, etc. Esports organization at the moment with a global presence.
You should not have to pay to watch the GSL, Proleague, or OSL at a reasonable time. That is not "fine" and it's BS to say otherwise. My sig since 2011. http://www.youtube.com/user/dabom88

yeah, atm I'm more excited for a CS team than a Dota, maybe because I don't have any team that seems worth it.

Nice to see Liquid have a hand in League now even though I don't care for it. Looking forward to seeing chill and hbox play some smash with the liquid tag, and I really hope Liquid can get themselves a dota 2 team again soon.

I mean its their site, if who ever it was who left didn't like it they were always free to start their own. TL has always and will always cover what they're interested in covering, not what is most popular (hence never covering halo or CS or waiting this long to get involed in the FGC in any way.) Monte can bite me

BYE TSM. THIS IS MY NEW TEAM. TL FOR LIFE.
Seriously, I wanted off the TSM wagon ever since they killed baylife.
Feels good to support TL once again in an esport that I emigrated to.

What about Liquid Smash and then Liquid Offensive? Which will eventually become sublets of LiquidMobos.net and LiquidShooters then we combine everything to recreate the dream LiquidEsports 2020.

i have mixed feelings about this. it's yet another symptom of TL dissolving in a sea of games I don't care about and probably never will. well, it is a little hypocritical to want TL to stay an SC2 site when for many people, that already was a big shift away from the BW they loved, but that doesn't mean I can't feel that way. also this act per se is not the cause, but it is a big symbol. yes, we still have the great folks who write about SC2, the LR cool boys' club and a squad of loveable pros, but it just feels like a shadow of its former self and that's mainly because so many people left for other games...

yeah pretty much sums up how I feel about this

How big of a passive aggressive crybaby does somebody have to get mad because an esports team didnt find the time/budget/resources to get involved in their esport of choice?

Nah monte is right in this case. TL was anti lol for a very long time. Do you know how long it took them to even acknowledge that LoL world finals was going on and to feature that stream on the side bar? I remember cause I used to joke about it with a friend about how much TL wanted to pretend that LoL didn't even exist. Their staff was very pro dota 2 and anti lol because they liked dota 2 more to play.

I mean its their site, if who ever it was who left didn't like it they were always free to start their own. TL has always and will always cover what they're interested in covering, not what is most popular (hence never covering halo or CS or waiting this long to get involed in the FGC in any way.) Monte can bite me

I think the situation with LoL was "a bit" more tricky than that.

All I know about this LoL team is that Piglet is the Scottie Pippen to Faker's Michael Jordan, but I think he was exaggerating to me when he said it.

i have mixed feelings about this. it's yet another symptom of TL dissolving in a sea of games I don't care about and probably never will. well, it is a little hypocritical to want TL to stay an SC2 site when for many people, that already was a big shift away from the BW they loved, but that doesn't mean I can't feel that way. also this act per se is not the cause, but it is a big symbol. yes, we still have the great folks who write about SC2, the LR cool boys' club and a squad of loveable pros, but it just feels like a shadow of its former self and that's mainly because so many people left for other games...

yeah pretty much sums up how I feel about this

At least teamliquid.net is still about starcraft.
Personally I'm very happy that team liquid is entering LoL world. And Street Fighter player - so cool!

If they could pickup Dota2 squad as well I would be super happy. Best case scenario would be for TL to pickup promising youngsters for their D2 team.

Man, I really think teamliquid.net needs a complete overhaul at this point or a "all-in-one" solution. I don't care about the other games too much, but would love to keep up with TeamLiquid in all of them. Right now I'd have to bookmark like 5 different pages. And when they add Heroes it's gonna be even worse as I'm actually kinda interested in that game... ~

Maybe I missed it, is it possible to activate all forums + news at once on teamliquid.net?

Honestyl, I think there are two separate events here. TL having LoL team is big. Nazgul sharing ownership of TL - huge.
EDIT: by huge I mean important; not that I'm particulary happy or unhappy about it. Just important.

Wow what the fuck?

This is huge :D

I'm not into LoL, but congrats and good luck in the LCS.

Now I'd love Liquid to also have a CS:GO team. I definitely would love a CS team with the Liquid spirit, though it seems highly incompatible apparently...

But who knows? When LiquidDota was announced, I believe it was Nazgul who said that he felt that Liquid spirit and aspirations were much closer to DotA than to LoL, and here we are a few years forward, with Liquid picking up an esports organization with a LoL team, and launching LiquidLegends.net.

Maybe in a few years

Someone leaked this, it seems weeks ago, but I didn't really fully believe it; only 75%. Today is a great day for me. With TSM faltering, and as someone who has been on this site since Boxer was playing Starcraft (forgot my original name) vs oov, Elky and Grrr were practice partners, and Julyzerg ate more than just cheeseburgers with unstacked mutalisks, it is easy for me to know who to root for in LoL. Easy chant, too...

4th best team in NA. Very literally, since they are infamous for always finishing 4th.

But seriously it is a team with a lot of fans and decent chances. Really as good as a pickup you can hope for joining the club late.

Imo they have come out quite well in the off season relative to the other NA teams with all the roster changes.

Well I was more talking about the past, you just have to call Curse 4th best. :D

Yeah they might finish higher now. But its hard to say with all those changes that went on. And there are uncertainties about their new mid laner and about how well Piglets adapts to the team since he seemed kinda unhappy.

Is there any way to import subscriptions from the tl to liquidlegends?

My threads button on liquidlegends only shows this thread and I don't want to go and find every thread that I've posted in to follow it.

Alternatively I could just not post from liquidlegends and only from teamliquid but that seems to defeat the point.

It is a bit of a joke in the League community that Curse is cursed and always destined to finish in 4th place, no better, no worse, no matter what. However, there is good reason to believe that they can do better this split (read: they signed some Koreans this offseason). Most who follow League would still consider them a longshot to finish 1st, though 3rd or even 2nd isn't out of the question.

For people who follow Dota 2/Starcraft II, all you really need to know is that they aren't as good as Cloud 9, but much, much better than Evil Geniuses.

Naturally, this is their site and organisation and they get to do exactly what they want, that doesn't mean it's not scummy. The hate on LoL on these forums was massive when it became clear that LoL would be the flagship of e-sports. But it wasn't just the community, TL staff took part in it too. And now they are all happy and excited to be part of the LoL e-sports scene? After, like mentioned, systematically trying to ignore the whole thing even existed?

There's a difference between simply not picking up a game because your not interested, and not pick up the game due to ''hardcore gamer'' elitism and envy. In which one do you think TL falls? Especially a few years back when LoL rose and made it clear that SC2 would never be the e-sport it was hyped up to be? When the Koreans chose LoL over SC2 and Dota 2? The salt on this forum was a sight to behold. (I know, because I was one of the salty ones, I wanted SC2 to succeed so badly. I refused to be a StarCraft elitist though.)

If you honestly think TL suddenly got interested in LoL after years of shitting on it, then you're naive. This has nothing to do with interest. It has to do with the fact that Dota 2 failed to deliver on it's promise to be the ''LoL killer'' it was hyped out to be, which means LoL will stay as the un-disputed flagship of e-sports for the years to come.

This is a BUSINESS move from TL to tap into a bigger market and bigger scene, nothing more. A good one at that, even if it means supporting a ''game for casuals'' like LoL.

Wow, this is huge news. Still trying to get my head around it, but seems like it's an awesome development. Like Nazgul said, it was hard for Liquid to compete against the mega organizations like EG and Cloud9. This will allow them to compete on an even footing.

This is so unexpected and cool. I think Liquid and Curse have a lot of similarities and this merger should be pretty seamless. I'm a dota player at heart but LoL is a great game as well and Curse was a pretty competitive squad. It was definitely a well managed squad which in my opinion means the best for the future. GL to the new Liquid, hope they also get a dota squad soon :D

the internet has very happy rules:
cooperation > competition
inclusiveness > exclusiveness
sharing > ownership
the reward is always growth

Interesting. I guess its clear that both teams thought that they couldn't make it on their on hence a merge. good luck to both but this is a clear showing that the sc2 scene is not stable on its own. Curse wants to solidify their perception in the pro scene by pairing up with the most stable sc team of all time.

That dude is so salty over getting what he wanted, but not in a timely manner... TL was a group with limited resources and had their money where they wanted it. This opportunity is pretty absurd for them so of course they are game to jump into a couple games they haven't been a part of. For him to assume that TL was ignoring the popularity of his game of choice is ridiculous. There are plenty of longtime TL staff and contributors that follow LoL so that "elitism" wasn't from the people running the show, just a portion of the community.

The flagship of esports? And you want to talk about elitism? Dude, me and countless others have been following esports for over a decade and don't give a shit about LoL or what game they want to play in Korea. To me, CS is the best esport and they play a joke version of it in Korea. Doesn't make it any less legitimate. This is like saying that soccer is the flagship 'real' sport because its played by the most people in the most countries. Who cares? To me and many others, soccer is terrible. This isn't a competition between games. You sound like a 13 year old. For real though, just as many people dislike LoL as there are those who enjoy it. I can't even watch it for more than 15 seconds before turning it off because it is so unappealing and unexciting. Good on TL for expanding into new games though. Everybody deserves a chance to play and support the game they choose. Quit whining.

Edit: Also, wouldn't you think the most popular game would also be the game played by the most casuals? Its ok that LoL is a casual game with a healthy pro scene - every game is played casually by many people. LoL just has the most of em because its free and easy to get into which translates into a stronger business which is what Riot is: a business.

Huh? Facts =/= elitism. LoL is the biggest and most recognized e-sport inside AND outside the gaming world. If you're too blind due to fanboyism to see that, then that's your problem. And yes...? Soccer was in many ways a flagship sport and, indeed, for a massive part of the world it still is today. And at no point did I suggest that LoL is the only ''real'' e-sport.

A question, what is your definition of a ''flagship'' e-sport game? What gives a game that title? Apparenly it's not having the most popularity or recognition, nor worldwide tournament infrastructure.

I never said this was a competition between games? You keep putting words into my mouth. Then you go on a rant about how you can't enjoy watching soccer or LoL? OK. I don't see how that in any shape or form related to what I posted, but thanks for sharing. Also, I didn't say anywhere that TL doesn't have the right to play or support the game. Of course they do.

It seems like you COMPLETELY missed the point of my whole post. I suggest you re-read my post. It has very little to do with ''what game is best'' or ''what game is the most fun to watch'', but more to do with TLs past negative attitude towards LoL and the near 180 change that took place.

What? Again, I think you missed the point of that last line. I was referring to the old way of thinking (used to be very common here on TL a few years back) that LoL is a casual game that takes no skill, which is why it's popular. LoL has been referred to as a ''game for casuals'' for years now, by the SC / Dota community especially. It has to do with the envy part I mentioned in my post.

Naturally one would expect the most popular game to have the most amount of casuals, simply due to the volume of gamers. That should be obvious.

Yeah, and I am a huge cs fan and you don't see me complaining that csgo on liquid is limited to a single thread in the 'other games' section. Different sites gravitate towards different games.

Has Liquid ever featured CSGO majors in the sidebar?

Nope but that hasn't stopped the game from shattering viewership expectations

That's true. But if you are going to feature Evo and LoL in the side stream before they got official sites, IMO you should also feature the CSGO Majors

Interesting to see TL get into LoL. I think people are kind of making a big deal out of nothing with how long it took TL to make the site. It was a long time before liquiddota came around and TL even had a Dota 2 team for a while during that time. Its only recently that they've moved to having separate sites for the separate communities (with the exception of LiquidPoker) and since LoL is the one that TL has had the least official involvement thus far, it makes sense that a separate LoL forum would come later.

Envy, saltiness, being butthurt. Call it whatever you want, but if you honestly think that the SC2 / Dota 2 community wasn't upset over the fact that LoL turned out to be way more successful as a game and as an e-sport, then you're delusional.

Wow, MonteCristo is super mad....

Of course there may be more to that, but accusing Liquid of denying LoL is stupid. When Liquid picked a DotA 2 team, the announcement exposed that they felt closer to this game than to LoL. It's not a duty for Liquid to feature LoL... it's completely up to them to do it or not, whether it's a matter of money, interest, opportunity, whatever... MonteCristo acts like Liquid failed on this. That's completely stupid...

Oh, and by the way, there still has been a LoL community on the Liquid forums, with their own section... Usually Liquid puts up a dedicated website if they pick a team and start expanding onto a new esports.

And ROFL at the "Refusing to enter due to raging fanboys". That's a pretty low respect to Nazgul... And again, as if they "had" to. Damn these tweets have been poorly thought...

If he's sad that TL didn't get in LoL earlier, that's his problem, not TL's...

From the impression I have gotten as well, there has been quite a lot of negative / belittling attitude towards LoL from TL staff in the past, so I kind of get Monte's saltiness.

MonteCristo ist just mad because the SC2 community hated his casting and he left for lol to get some money.
now he flames TL for doing the same, nice logic. those tweets are highly "unprofessional" though and he is even confirming his opinion is biased because he has all info from a person who "left" TL.

Fionn and Chexx are TL staff right? So talking about "the TL staff" seems a bit overgeneralizing...

If he has concerns with specific staff members that's towards them, not the whole TL organization, that he should point his anger at, in my opinion...

Also, as this is often the case in many places over the internet, LoL is sometimes considered more "casual" than many other esports like, say, DotA, SC, CS, so I'd like to know if it's not rather a lack of interest for LoL from other staff member that got to him as "they've been negative towards LoL". It'd be interesting to see what got him to say that about the staff in the first place....

You're missinformed if you think monte "left for lol to get some money" he primaril came to korea to cast LoL Ogn and filled in with starcraft bcause they needed english casters and he was forming a dup with Doa anyway. i doubt he cared about starcraft players giving him shit for casting starcraft for the first time.

Well, between MonteCristo and TL, only one of them has claimed to be community-driven and not about money or business.

I'm glad to see TL doing something, for sure, I'm just hoping there'll soon be something I care about watching too. GLHF to the LoL team though.

That TL didn't liked lol is the same like a 10 year old nintendo fan meets a 10 year old playstation fan.
Both of them hate on each others console until they grew up and drink beers together playing GTA5 and after that mario galaxy. People and community's mature and learn to live along. Monte is right that from a buisness point of view it would have been better to go sooner into lol but money isn't always the decision maker.

people upset that TL didn't get into LoL sooner just means how much they value and care that TL is involved on what they love most.

Like many others in DOTA land, i dont give a flying shit about LoL due to the action of a certain peep called "Pendragon". I cant find it in me to support a game that is created by that piece of shit.

However, I do want to congrats team liquid on moving on to the moba that more people play, and hope it turns out well for them as it is still a valid business consideration

Indeed and that was pointed out by monte cristo when the rumours of TL getting into LoL started.

'Worldwide Infrastructure'

Lol.... League of Legends E-Sports would absolutely collapse on itself completely if Riot pulled their funding for the LCS. It would only survive in Korea and China, and maybe a few other Asian countries.

And not to turn this into a 'LoL' casual thread, but when we're talking about solo ranked ques, League is actually very casual in comparison to DotA, especially since they changed how exp/gold works when you are behind.

One additional thing I don't get is how people rave about the deisgn of the new website. Not only is it functionally identical to TL and LD, but it is also less readable and more cluttered with non-information object, particularly in forums, where the images next to posters' IDs are superannoying. I really hope this does not get backported to TL proper.

Wow if the LoL fans getting butthurt and angry over liquid being late to the party are any indication of what the LoL scene is about than just...lol. "Our game is the biggest most relevant esport every other game wishes to be!"

It's like saying dota/sc2 fans don't like lol cause it is bigger, that might be true for some, but it's no fundamental truth...

this is what happens when u have unpaid staffers and are at the same time as big/important and as professional as TL tries to come off... staff that are not actually staff but rather volunteers talk, and people listen, thinking what they just heard is what TL is all about. sometimes it works for the organization (because most of the people involved are great human beings), sometimes not so much. but people still keep coming back, so i guess it doesn't matter...

for myself, i remember DOTA announcement and as starcraft-only fanboy (therefore with no bias and attachment to either moba powerhouses) how surprised i was by what ensued afterwards, specifically by how well respected community members were shrugged off when they spoke up basically saying "what about lol"... the general tone of the responses was such that you can't really deny TL hated on LoL, and i imagine it only got worse afterwards, so i guess guys like NonFactor do have a point.

however, as i've already said it's nice to be able to distinguish TL officials and TL community vibe, if it bothers you that much. from business standpoint, this was painfully obvious direction to take... congrats to Curse players. pay your writers now TL

Every LoL fan who is bitter about TL just now getting involved in the LoL scene is being extremely naive. TL isn't an organization based on covering the biggest and best games being played, it's only about what their core members want to spend their time covering. If there wasn't many people on their staff willing to cover LoL when TL didn't even have a team invested in the scene, are they really to blame?

Yes at one time TL was the place to be for the best competitive game at the time (BW) and so it WAS the pinnacle place to be at that time. Just like literally everything else in this world the game it was covering sputtered out due to their pro scene moving to SC2 and TL followed the merge between the two as would make sense. Along the way they demonstrated that they also had an affection for Dota2 and branched out into that, but nowhere during that time did they express any interest in League at all. The "hate" associated with LoL was just TL users expressing their discontent with being steered towards a game simply because of its size.

so does this have anything to do with Curse Voice? Is the program independant of the eSports team or is it called "Liquid Voice" now?

The players/team left Curse and LiQuiD made his own company prior to the merger. I expect the Curse Voice app to be still owned by Curse, not LiQuiD.

Congratulations, seems like it is a really fitting match
Also, congratz to the LoL section becoming standalone, good, long overdue move considering it's the largest eSports to date.
Now, question: what about the future largest eSports, HotS? Beta is gonna start soon, do we get at least a subsection? Curse has (had?) a HotS team too, after all...

I've been waiting for Liquid to pick up a league team forever. I remember back in SC2 beta (around pre-season 1 in LoL) everyone on the Liquid boards shit on League for being low-skill cap except for a few hardcore posters in the "Other Games" LoL thread. It's crazy how big League has gotten now and it shows how far the game has come (Nissan as a sponsor).

I kinda wonder why the LoL forums are still on TL now, too. Seems sorta confusing and pointless to have them still on the sidebar here now that there's a full site for that, and even somewhat buggy. The community section, since it's meant to be shared, has support for the different sites all posting on the same thread, with the LoL, DotA and Hearthstone logo, but the now-shared LoL forums don't seem to have that same support. Instead of showing the LoL logo, anyone who's posted just on the new site in those threads show up here on TL as a zero-post-count user, defaulted to the Terran unit icons.

Give it some time. All the LoL content on TL will make a full transition over to LL.
End result is more or less like LD.

Why not League of Legends?

We understand that League right now is the biggest game with the largest player base. But this isn't purely a business or numbers decision for TL. At this moment, taking into account our existing core audience (StarCraft fans), we believe that Dota 2 should be the game we add to our coverage. It "fits" TL's style, and it's very popular among our staff, who play and watch the game as well as visit sites like r/dota2. We already have an active Dota 2 forum, and pro Dota 2 players are streaming using our stream list. Though no TL game expansion can compare to us adding StarCraft 2 two years ago, this is a similar situation where all the pieces are already in place.

Kinda dissapointed by this, don't feel LoL scene first the spirit of TL community, at all. And I'm worried this will just dilute the number of talented people working on TL SC2.

For a very long time, we already had a team of League staff making excellent quality content. Unfortunately, that content was stuck hidden in the depths of a small subforum. Now this just means they have the chance to have their work featured and seen. There is no split in staff talent. I can't imagine you or anyone else should be disappointed in having writers receive recognition for their hard work and effort.

Yeah I feel like a lot of people are underestimating the size of the existing LoL community in TL. There was already a lot of content and users there, its just a matter of making a separate site so that the information can be featured properly. Just like what happened with LiquidDota and LiquidHearth.

Websites don't just update themselves. There are actual people probably working hard to implement a new redesign right now.

I'm well aware! It just seems a little strange to go ahead with all of this and not be completely prepared for the changes needed.

It's not a question of being prepared, it's just a question of getting it all done. I haven't followed LL development closely at all but I imagine bugs and various issues on the LoL site will be prioritized over updates to TL/LD that reflect the existence of a new site. Should all be done and done in a few days

I can count the number of people on SC2 staff that are actively involved in LoL on one hand. Don't worry about any noticeable staff cutbacks, the sites are almost completely separate in this regard

For those that underestimate LoL (like I do did, yuk) or the partnership, here is a little eye opener:

"As of January 2014, over 67 million people play League of Legends per month, 27 million per day, and over 7.5 million concurrently during peak hours."

"Payments by players have helped “League of Legends” become the second-largest game of its kind in 2013, raking in $624 million in revenue for the year, according to SuperData Research."

“League of Legends” and its success is a shining light for the [PC] videogame industry, particularly as sales of new [PC] videogames at retail stores in the U.S. continues to fall."

"Gamers and industry watchers say Riot’s success stems in part from its many tournaments, which pit top players from around the world against one another."

I don't think there is anyone that "works" on TL SC2 that is staff on TL League

Graphics and Web Development staff do this quite a bit actually. And ofc, especially R1CH.

Laughable that people still think retail stores mean anything for PC game sales.

As someone who enjoys a lot LoL and the e-sport scene im excited to see TL picking a LoL team, TL is for me (like surely for many of you) a house and i just can't wait too see that damn Horse logo in the LCS stream, seriously CANT WAIT!!

But on the other hand, i will never forget how TL community treated whoever liked LoL, it was a SHITSTOM and sadly it was not show but you could feel the same from the staff.

I came first here in TL for Brood War, the e-sport i had loved the most, watched all the WoL era until demn patchzergs made the game boring and just moved to another game and scene wish i liked it but for that i was filthy "casual" with no real "skill".

I mean it never hurt me, but it was annoying to be marked as one all time.

To bring something positive to my grain of salt, i must say that now i have team to follow in the NA LCS (im a EU LCS follow and fan of Gambit Gaming) and really gonna root for TL in the next NA LCS.

Let's enjoy the ride guys!

glad to see that the LoL contributors' hardwork and passion are being rewarded.

consistently well written articles that get the attention of competitive fans and reddit can make TL even greater. it's up to you crazy volunteer writers and staff.

Except for, you know, all the times they use "this isn't a business" as a cop-out.

Remember a few months ago when they were looking for Heroes writers, and some people were asking "what are the salary/benefits?" I believe the go-to line then was basically that TL isn't a business, it's all passion and community and people who want to do stuff for the site because they love it so much.

Personally, I'd love to see TL become a legitimate Esport organization that crosses into as many games as it wants, and treats its players and staff with professional integrity. But all things considered (especially considering some comments from former Liquid DotA players), it still seems like Liquid is stuck between acting like it's all about #passion and #liquidfamily, and trying to become a major Esports club.

Yeah, we're still working on adding some other platforms where pros like Imp/Mata/Dandy stream, will be nice to finally have a western platform where all the Chinese streams are aggregated and listed in a (hopefully) convenient way.

Granted, there aren't that many Mod/Staff posts on it, but the ones there all say the same general idea, that it's a site for passion and community, and that TL isn't a money making venture.

I don't think they still try to act like the #passion anymore. althou I don't know what you are refering to with the comments from former Liquid Dota players.

But I have to admit that the sc community was toxic as fuck towards league. I hope that changes.

Ex-Liquid.Fluff did an AMA or something, I think, or at least said on stream about how bad Liquid was as an organization for managing a team. Don't want to overstate or misquote anything he said, but it was generally negative.

I don't understand what you think has changed tho. the mods/writers that have been writing league articles for years are still doing it for free.

Sure they have. And again, I hope Liquid expands to whatever games they want and does it well. Esports needs more organizations that are stable and professional.

Just as long as they are being professional about it, and not being whatever they want to be whenever its convenient.

I think you're confusing Liquid the pro team (business) and Team Liquid the community website (passion). It's been that way for a very long time and why they separated the two entities online with the teamliquidpro website.

Liquid following the money.. which is expected for a business.

Doesn't really affect me because the only esport I care about is Starcraft 2. Still, congratulations to all parties involved.

you definitely overstated and misquoted lmfao
he said he had no problems with management in terms of enabling the players to play comfortably but felt that liquid failed to promote them as players (implying he wanted commercial marketing of an individual - basically what you see with rtz with eg, or dendi with navi)

Until liquiddota was around, the only thing separating Dota2 from LoL was the fact that Dota2 articles were featured whereas LoL wasn't. Both had staff that were doing consistent writing in their respective forums and a community to go along with it. While the TL community as a whole isn't hugely accepting of LoL, I would hardly say the administration has tried to snub the League community.

It makes sense that LiquidLegends would be created later than the other sites because TL isn't as large a part of the League community as it is for Dota and HS.

Well that alone was pretty meh tbh...
I actually think there is some truth to the comments of thorin and monte, but whatever, NOW TL stands behind lol.

This... is kinda huge. It either spells doom for TeamLiquid as we know it, or it's the next big thing in esports. Again.

He does have a point imho. I recall the original release from Naz explaining why Liquid would support Dota 2 vs LOL....seems like a pretty quick change of heart that should be properly explained if Liquid Legends hopes to have any credibility with the LOL scene.

I don't think it's that quick, personally. League has undergone quite a few changes since Victor's original comments, especially with the Summoner's Rift makeover for S5. On top of that, merging with an established League team eliminates a lot of the logistical work required to make a team from scratch, which means it makes a lot more business sense for a team that didn't want to put that kind of work into the game originally.

To reiterate, Liquid didn't want to invest a huge amount of time and resources building up a League team from scratch; they preferred to do that with DotA 2. Curse came along and said, "We already have the players, management, and staff. We just need a brand." Done deal.

Shouldn't you also consider the matter that the release quotes from the 2 owners say that Liquid approached TL 1st? Its perfectly plausible that without that opportunity presented to them that they wouldn't have a LoL team anytime soon, but that they said "hey why not" when presented with a sound opportunity on the business end and able to please a section of its community. 2 Birds one stone and people here are too bitter for no reason. Monte just likes to talk like that as if he is some fountain of wisdom.

Yes, that's what happened. But the question is WHY did it happen? Why did TL choose to make a Dota 2 team before a LoL team? A better fit? Raging fanboys as Monte put it? Was the idea of covering a ''game for casuals'' too repulsive, aka elitism? If they had the resources to form a Dota 2 team, surely they could have done the same for LoL? Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't TL officially start covering Hearthstone before they started covering LoL?

Do notice that there's a difference between COVERING a game, and creating a team. When TL started covering Dota 2, they didn't have a team. (Or the team wasn't announced yet.) They simply started publishing articles and attempted to become a community site for Dota 2. They REFUSED to do that for LoL for years. Despite it being the number 1 e-sport in the world. Despite numerous talented writers on TL writing amazing articles.

Not starting a team in LoL is understandable if you lack the resources to do so. But why not at least cover it? Clear example from the opening post:

Of all the staff TL.net has had over the past 13 years, Fionn is one of the most talented writers we’ve had the pleasure of working with. After discovering us during our Brood War days, he became one of our marquee writers for StarCraft 2. His interest later shifted to League of Legends, and many of you will know him from his work on LoLesports.com. We're glad to have him back on board, and look forward to the quality articles he will put out with the rest of the writing staff.

Too bad he couldn't have his stuff promoted on TL. Guess they lacked the resources?

Here's the real reason why: Because TL wanted NOTHING to do with LoL. The SC / Dota 2 community especially wanted NOTHING to do with LoL. They hated LoL. Just look at some of the posts in this very thread. Can you imagine how bad the bashing was back in 2011-2012 when LoL took over? TL was probably the most concentrated cesspool of LoL hate in the internet at the time. And now it's suddenly a good thing that TL is moving to LoL? Now LoL suddenly is a-okay? It just seems so fake and it certainly leaves a bad taste to those of us who saw the hate first hand.

Now, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with TL going with Dota 2 - that's their choice. I'm not even saying that there's anything wrong with bashing LoL or giving it the finger. But at least be HONEST about the reasons why you chose Dota 2. At least be HONEST why you neglected LoL for years. There's no mention of that.

There's a reason why TL jumped the LoL bandwagon this late in to the game, and it has nothing to do with ''lack of resources.''

I'll tell you the reason:

Most TL staff like dota 2 more. Most TL stafff thought dota 2 was better. Most of TL staff and community didn't like LoL. So it made sense.

Now, some time has passed, A lot of TL staff actually likes lol. A lot of the community has finally acceped that LoL is the biggest e-sport right now even if its more casual. Some may not like it, but most don't hate it anymore. People hated LoL because it was the game that was starting to steal the spotlight from the best e-sport ever sc2, the true esport! the best esport!. But now, most people, don't care very much. Me for example "hated" lol. but now, i don't particulary care, i don't play it, and i even kind of like it now, its jsut that i like heroes more because of the short games.

So i guess a lot of people see it that way, including victor and the TL staff, and when the oportunity arose to have another team, increasing the revenue (maybe? i hope, because giving away half of TL to another guy idk if its a good idea, but thats another topic), they did it. Maybe some are not passsioned about the game, maybe for victor is a "strictly" buissness decition, but there are a lot of the TL staff, and those curse guys who are very passionate about the game. I don't think theres more to it than that.

i don't think there's a much hate for LoL as you think, but there's a lot more crossover between the Dota2 and SC2 community than there is the lol and sc2 community, especially 2 years ago. That was more of the driving decision

Agreed. It is certainly true that the attitude has changed and is better then it used to be.

I just find it annoying when apologists go ''They had no resources! There are good and valid reasons why TL completely ignored LoL! It had nothing to do with TL hating LoL! TL staff never said anything!'' etc etc. Yeah, no.

As mentioned above, I just think it's in poor taste and dis-respectful to the LoL community as a whole to ignore TLs history with LoL. The least they could is at least acknowledge it.

And your right, there have been a lot of people who have been very passionate about LoL here on TL for a VERY long time. Too bad none of them got any official recognition until this merge.

And I agree - this is a business move, nothing else.

I wasn't being apologetic. I thought I was pretty clear that Liquid preferred to spend their resources covering DotA 2. That implicitly means they liked DotA more. Ultimately most of the staff are volunteers, so if their preference is with DotA 2 then that's where you're gonna have the passion directed toward. I was just noting the improved quality of League in response to some people bringing up Victor's old comments toward the game, matched with the opportunity to be involved with the game without any real change on the part of current TL staff; almost all the staff passionate about League come from the former-Curse side or are returning members like Fionn. TL now has the staff and resources to cover both games with the merger, with each group of staff being passionate about their respective game(s).

Basically all I'm saying is we're gonna have a passionate TL League community, and TL's previous position regarding the game is no longer relevant.

TL went with dota because their staff preferred dota. Monte is still and always has been a moron and a blight on the lol scene. Its not blind lol hating, tl staff preferred lol on a personal level, and thats why they went with lol. They never ruled out going to lol, they went with dota first becuase they enjoyed it more. The fact that lol players take monte seriously is a mark against the scene.

I think Liquid realised their fanbase would've hated them covering LoL when it beat SC2 as the biggest esport in 2012. Now that SC2's fans have evaporated to a hardcore base, the fans left only care about Starcraft, and probably accept that LoL's bigger or don't care. That's my take on it. TL has less to lose than to gain now that SC2's fanbase has distilled into hardcore fans.

Anways GL in LoL. You need some success as a Pro Gaming Team

If you're this mad over liquid not following the same priorities as you you could always just leave.

He does have a point imho. I recall the original release from Naz explaining why Liquid would support Dota 2 vs LOL....seems like a pretty quick change of heart that should be properly explained if Liquid Legends hopes to have any credibility with the LOL scene.

You mean this?

We understand that League right now is the biggest game with the largest player base. But this isn't purely a business or numbers decision for TL. At this moment, taking into account our existing core audience (StarCraft fans), we believe that Dota 2 should be the game we add to our coverage. It "fits" TL's style, and it's very popular among our staff, who play and watch the game as well as visit sites like r/dota2

So more staff starting watch LoL and they were given the opportunity to pick up a LoL team so they did. Seems to fit and not to be out of character and it also never says anything bad about LoL on the contrary it says that LoL is the biggest game in eSports... Wow all the salt with no background

Hey Steve,

You had great things to say about the team and I am a strong beleaver that it will show in s5 LCS. I counting on you to win worlds and start NA on the path of teamwork over "just farm" attitude.

Much Love to Team Liquid,

I don't know about the team side, because I'm just a banling. But I do remember the conversations over LoL coverage, and there was always a fear of becoming jack of all trades, master of none. That is TL is what TL is because we cover certain competitive games super indepth. We're not a generic gaming site like Kotaku. TL has always had a contingent of staff very interested in LoL, writing articles. There's also staff like me that play LoL casually and have never played Dota 2- but people like me are not helpful as I don't have the drive to contribute anything to LoL. The point being that if TL was going to officially go after LoL, they wanted to do it with excellence and not dilute their brand with an enthusiastic swing at LoL, but with no follow through. At the time, it was felt it could be either dota or lol, but not both.

That was then, this was now. Maybe the continued strength of the LoL scene made it more attractive (not a flash in the pan), maybe the relative success of splitting sites with combined General subforums, has made the idea more tenable-- can you imagine at the time if we had the reborn BW, SC2, Dota 2, Hearth, AND LoL all filtering through one featured news? News items would be bumped out of the featured slot the very same day they were posted. Also, while there were lots of willing writers, it seems on the admin side, there weren't people that were looking to run a LoL team. The combination of TL and Cursed, suddenly brings those people on board, now we have a team, now there's a big incentive to increase TL's coverage on LoL.

Mostly speculation on my part because I'm not at all involved with that sort of decision-making, but I don't they are unreasonable inferences. Could TL have covered LoL in the past in greater way? Maybe, probably. But I don't think it was unreasonable to wait and see, and slowly expand rather than leaping at each and every game immediately. We still don't want to become Kotaku, so when we go for another game, we'll do it with excellence.

Congrats on the LoL guys, you waited long and hard!

Also woo another subforum removed from Teamliquid.net , it's truly starting to look like it should again!

have you never taken a class in basic finance or some shit
it's a merger, not an acquisition
how would you lose assets in a merger
assuming tl and curse were equal in net worth, liquid just gained 100% of their net value

it's like implying that a company loses money & control in an ipo lmfao

That would be interesting. But Secret will be pretty damn expensive. Don't think Liquid has the resources for that, even with the Curse merger.

Curse has the strongest point at one point before curse.com lost interest. Curse brought a lot of sponsors with them and liquid isn't as low income as some people seem to think. I'm not saying that they are the mystery sponsor, but they could be.
