Terry Brooks' series, the first couple were good, but they've been dropping off in quality steadily ever since the heritage of shannara set Terry Goodkind -- Sword of Truth is a decent read, he tries to get philosophical, so I usually just skip over any sections of the book where the main character is monologing (sp?), but the story is fairly entertaining

TLers probably recommend it because its gritty and coarse compared to LotR or most other fantasies. Like others have said, characters die left and right. At the end of the first book, all my fav characters are dead so I don't really care to read more.
I recommend the Sword of Truth series. It definitely has some grit (read: sexual content, profanity, etc) without being over the top. The plot and characters are fantastic. While such things are a matter of taste, I can't help but feel that Sword of Truth blows ASOIAF out of the water and then some. I'm also a Wheel of Time fan, although the last book I read (Crossroads of Twilight) was pretty boring.
sword of truth is pretty good, but terry goodkind is a big, blubbering douchebag. if you read any interview of him you will know what i mean. that has unfortunatly (while i know i shouldn't) tainted my view a little of his books. plus he has very repetitive storylines, and it gets ridiculous.
A song of fire and ice is good because it maintains credibility and realism in its own world throught the entire duration of the series so far. the only problem i can see so far is too many characters (like, having to split a book into two 700+ page tomes because of that many characters).

well they have GRRM as a writer/co-writer of episodes, and GRRM has written TV episodes before, so hopefully it'll be good
and since its HBO we know it won't stray far from the tons of sex/violence etc

The book is very nice, but i wouldn't recommend it to the guy, who only started to get aquainted with fantazy. I recommend you to read A.Sapkovsky "Vedmak" or how it else called "Story about Geralt and Zireael".

Tad Williams Wrote this one series called "Memory, Sorrow, And Thorn. It was a decent read though it was only four books long. Man I hate reading about Sansa. I just dont care what happens to her.

Try ebay or half.com or something. Reduced price could make up for shipping.

Or if you have a palm or something you can download the etext with no shipping charge and read from there, if you don't mind that stuff.
