I can't imagine the people who've been with the series since AGOT came out in 1996.

There was so much depth to them and many of my friends who read the series (most of them thought it was boring) often got the wrong idea about each character. The biggest one was that Cersei is really smart. If he meant that she knew how to talk, he was right on. But what I really thought was neat was how the series takes place on several parts of the world and how each POV seems completely irrelevant to the other but they slowly come together. That is what was pretty neat. And my favorite part was the politics. They were so complex compared to other books. You could point out characters that would be doves or hawks in our society and make analogies with the American conservatives or liberals.

GRRM gives you a great story. As I see it, the three greatest fantasy authors is Tolkien, Jordan and GRRM. These three giants realized that a great story is all about character and most importantly, character growth. I've read alot of interviews with fantasy/sci fi authors who mention GRRM as a prime example of inspiration. I dont know how to do that quote thingie yet, since I'm a new poster (long time lurker though) but someone said that he kills off characters. A common thread in alot of writers inspired by Eddings for example always lack a certain level of exitement just due to the fact that the main characters always pull through, no matter what. I think it was Brandon Sanderson who said that GRRM thought him that if you kill of a beloved character. The reader is going to seriously worry the next time a character is in danger. I can really recommend Brandon Sanderson work for those who havent found it yet. Elantris, The Mistborn Trilogy and Warbreaker is a fantastic read. Not to mention the fact that Robert Jordans widow chose him to finish the WoT as a relatively new author to the fantasy scene.

You could point out characters that would be doves or hawks in our society and make analogies with the American conservatives or liberals. i agree that the world it is set it is really well constructed. the interwoven plots and politics are pretty expertly constructed. as well as that the parallels to the real world history in the horse people of the free cities being like mongolians, the people of westeros being similar to old age europe. the main reason i didn't think they were 'amazing' is because of some of the characters (pretty much all the starks for me) were just annoying and their chapter's so boring. snow being such a legolas/drizzt copy paste really annoyed me too, not because of it being a copy paste, just because it felt so generic and 'trying to be cool'. at the same time, i really loved the parts where arya was traveling around. her character didn't interest me too much, but the exploration she was doing and revealing the world in which the main storyline was happening was pretty cool.

A Game of Thrones: Genesis. An RTS game that is coming in 2011 and that's being developed by Cyanide. FOCUS HOME INTERACTIVE AND CYANIDE ANNOUNCE "A GAME OF THRONES: GENESIS" We are very pleased to announce that Focus Home Interactive will publish "A Game of Thrones: Genesis", Cyanide’s new strategy game on PC, adapted from George R.R. Martin's famous series of best-sellers novels "A Song of Ice and Fire". Today, we reveal the first 2 artworks from this game in which you will have to match your political prowess with your strategic and military skills! "A Game of Thrones: Genesis" plunges you into the heart of the battles and intrigues between the Families that shaped the Kingdom of Westeros. However, victory does not necessarily result from brute force. The innovative game mechanics provide players with numerous paths to success: will you opt for a military, economic or diplomatic approach? Trickery, treachery and deceit are widespread and you will constantly have to watch your back if you want to avoid a bitter defeat! Peacefully or forcefully annex surrounding territories, besiege enemy castles, send spies to infiltrate behind enemy lines, assassinate trouble-making officers or capture them to ask for a ransom... When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground! For the official announcement and the first art work go click the link: http://www.focus-home.com/index.php?rub=news&id=100 BTW you all probably already know this but for updates on all projects of George RR Martin visit http://grrm.livejournal.com/ regularly.

I would have preferred something more with more immersion like an RPG, but I'm still getting pumped for the artwork nonetheless.

Hope this book is actually decent and I hope we can go back to a regular format where all the characters appear in every book after this one.(which will prob come out in late 2011) Waiting 4-5 years to hear what happened to the characters you care about the most is brutal... Hope the RTS is decent but I sincerely doubt it as most RTS games to come out recently have been lame for multi-player. (single-player is fine I guess)

![]() Oh well, at least the TV series is coming along nicely. I'm glad they made a RTS for this. I'll definitely buy it just to support "A Song of Ice and Fire" and its affiliations. I hope they make an RPG/RTS like Mount&Blade or Morrowind/Oblivion for it - that would be my perfect game ![]()
