Bleh, I almost don't care anymore. By now, Martin is just embarassing himself. Even Tolkien eventually finished some of his books, and Tolkien is the guy he should measure up to imho.
It's been almost 3 years since I've read Feast I think, evenif the book WOULD eventually come out, I'd have to re-read the old books just to remember what happened. That sucks. I was excited for Dance with Dragons for almost 2 years, then I kept getting mails from amazon about how it was announced and announced again, etc. It was just painful. Fuck you Martin, fuck you.

+ Show Spoiler +Holy shit yeah, I was so pissed off when Cat and Robb died. Cat's life in particular is so tragic it hurts. First off her favorite son becomes a cripple at the age of seven and then her husband gets her head chopped off and then she thinks Bran and Rickon are dead when they're not and right before she was about to die she was convinced that all of her children were as good as dead when only Robb was only one actually dead. I was hanging on to the hope that the Starks would win and the family would finally be reconciled but then the treacherous freys murdered her. And then she resurrects as a merciless zombie and Arya is fucking blind and Sansa is married to Tyrion and Bran is crippled and Rickon is probably gonna grow up to be a serial killer because his childhood is so fucked up because of the war.

seriously? the red wedding was a brilliant and realistic twist in the plot. GRRM never wanted this series to be a typical high/epic fantasy with the heroes and main chars magically surviving everything thrown at them. remember this is set in a gritty and dark medieval era where people do whatever necessary to get what they want. if you're not getting that, maybe you were deceiving yourself on what the series was actually about.
oh and it is seriously frustrating that DoD has been further delayed. the main problem is that GRRM has been distracted by the upcoming HBO adaptation and he hasnt focused wholly on finishing the 5th book. i just hope he gets to finish the series before he passes away.

+ Show Spoiler + I didn't mind. Catelyn seemed like a stuck-up, self-righteous and selfish bitch most of the time. The Northerners are backwards and stupid. Sansa is a spoilt brat, I lol'd much when all her dreams came crashing down between her ears. Arya and Bran are doing fine - Arya's blindness is probably just a phase of her training, and Bran is going through a fine character building through adversity thing.

+ Show Spoiler +Totally agree on the Sansa bit... that bitch needed to get got. I really hope Arya ends up a fucking Jedi Master who just massacres anyone in her way. Arya rocks.

I just hope he doesn't die of a massive heart attack before finishing this series.
The books are great, the last one not as much as the first 3, but I realise it's a 'transition episode', laying the ground for coming episodes which should be epic. If he finishes them, that is.

FIVE. YEARS. FIVE. LONG. YEARS. D: I mean seriously, I want to read the damned series. He's going to die before it's over.
I love how you can't be sure who will die, who won't die. And I love how we start off hating Cersei and Jaime, but then it turns around and we're given a chance to like them. Every character is gray. GRRM criticizes LotR for too fairy tale-y of a story. Everything's not black and white. He's not afraid to destroy someone.
+ Show Spoiler +Where did you get this blind Arya? I don't remember. But it's been a while.
I want to read the Wheel of Time, but I don't feel like reading a story that doesn't have a satisfying conclusion. It's like just a cliffhanger for the rest of my life. Even if another author wrote it with plans, it doesn't have the same feel. That's why I'm hoping GRRM finishes this. He also said if he dies, no one is going to finish writing it for him. ><

+ Show Spoiler +If I remember correctly, Arya went blind after drinking a milk given to her by her instructors - she just woke up blind the next morning. It was sort of a punishment for killing a man, so I'm not sure whether it's just a phase in training or permanent state for her now.

omgwut, totally missed that part of the novel. Time to reread!
Thank God the series will come out and fill the gap between ADWD and TWOW. 10 episodes at least!

SOFI has too much incest-rape and too many war crimes for my tastes.
If I wanted to read about that stuff I'd open a history book.

I find reading a lot of the usual fantasy novels (eg. Salvatore) boring, because you know for sure that none of the main characters are going die. Even if they seem to be in the most horrible situation ever, meh, whatever, they'll get out of it soon enough. Not so with GRRM, it's great.
I also like the "gritty realism" where all characters are somewhere between good and evil and not distinctly either, all of them are just trying to fend for themselves. Makes for interesting reading. Not to mention, the story moves forward at a fairly rapid pace, quite unlike WoT. Just have to hope the author can finish the series, also unlike what happened with WoT.
+ Show Spoiler +The part with Cat resurrecting as a zombie or whatever is just strange though. I sort of wished she'd be done with when she got killed, but no.
Agreed on Sansa needing to get some dreams crushed. She was so horribly annoying to begin with that a good slap in the face does her good.

Brandon Sanderson is a significantly better writer than Robert Jordan ever was so don't let that stop you from reading WoT. The fact that the middle books of the series constitute 3000 pages of crap should give you pause though.

+ Show Spoiler +I ceased reading SOFI recently. I agree that killing main characters was nice change from your usual books, but GRRM has gone a bit overboard with it, killing every single character I liked - Nooooooooooooo... Tywin... - besides Bronn, but he wasn't all that great and important either. So, as it is, I have no one to attach myself to and continue reading because I'm interested in their story (I like characters in stories, not 'the history of a country' ). The story needs a protagonist. In other words, the series lack focus and are spread over too many characters and places which makes it painful to read at times.

Thoughts of Daenerys didn't play in the back of your mind throughout the entire Feast for Crows? oO

+ Show Spoiler +Well, Jon is still doing fine albeit he is somewhat disconnected from realms internal conflicts. Yeah and Daenyrs too, I wouldnt be surprised in a slightest to see her unite kingdom under Dragons banner once again.

the only bad thing about these books are the amount of time it takes him to write them. Especially when you read the books quickly, feast came out and I finished it by the end of that week and have been waiting for dragons ever since

In my opinion it adds to the realism of the book series. In real life, it's not always the 'good' guys who win, and real life is harsh. Especially when the stakes are as high as thrones and kingdom.
To put it into perspective, look at Tywin Lannister. + Show Spoiler +He is one the most brilliant minds in the kingdom, he is one of the most powerful lords, his daughter is a queen and his son is one of the best knights in the kingdom. His children commit incest, his youngest son is a dwarf, his son renounces his title, his daughter's a bitch and he dies on a toilet, killed by his own son.
Also, you can't look at the book series as a battle between good houses and bad houses. Sure, we're more sympathetic towards the Starks as the story begins, but the Lannisters have a lot of sympathetic characters (Tyrion, Jaime). Look at it as a story of houses battling for supremecy, not as the story of the Starks.

While it is true that Jaime is cool and lovable everyone forgets so easily that he was the one that crippled Bran (trying to kill him) just to cover his incest with his sister. Yeah he does good too, but if you look at the big picture Starks is the only good house. (not that it did them any good)
Well Tyrion rocks, thats true.

For me it reads like it is written by a high school student who tries to be sublte and refined but isnt at all.
