Five years in the making now or something, i dont see the big deal. I could translate a book from Eng > Swe in a few weeks if i worked full time on it. It's not just about direct translation, though. They want the words and sentences that are formed to mimic the original style of the author. That's why professional translations are usually done by career writers.

Its Polish and for some reason nobody wants to translate them to English. There is Czech translation though so I have indeed read it and I can confirm that The Witcher series is one of the best fantasy creations of all time. It has very cool characters (Geralt just has to be the best character of all time) and has its own style - high fantasy (elves, dwarves, magic) combined with dark and gritty world (drugs, poverty, racism, mutants), dirty politics and lots of sex and violence, plus influence of Slavic stories and fairy tales. Its very unique. Not the best fantasy IMO - I still like ASoIaF more, but second place is still awesome It's what this guy said. The fourth and fifth books took so long, and after how great the first three, especially the third were... they were a letdown. They had their moments that dragged, especially Brienne in book 4. Book 5 managed to make Tyrion boring after a certain point, which is quite a feat. However, 5 had a lot of good things happen in it and I wouldnt say it's nearly as bad as 4. Really, though... once you step back and really take a look at them they're great. AFFC doesn't have as much action and crazy twists, but its filled with world building and storybuilding. Theres lots of good shit that happens in there that you dont notice on a first read. The Dorne and Oldtown storylines were so good, and so very interesting. You take a bit to analyze them (or, do what I did and just read what others have analyzed) and you'll realize that GRRM is a goddamn mastermind and even his 'bad' books are fantastic. During, and afterr reading 4 I didn't like it. Now I think it's better than book 1, or at least equal. The fifth one was good, except for like the third quarter of it which got really dry. The last two will be incredible. As for The Witcher, this sounds awesome. I really want to read them now. I can read Polish, too... it's just that being born in Canada, my Polish isn't so good. It'll probalby take me a month to get through each one, while having a English - Polish dictionary open the entire time, and I'm sure I'll miss out on like 30% of everything that happens. D: But it'll be a learning experience.

actually, i remember getting to the end of book 4, where it says "And back on the wall..." and only just then realizing I was missing so many characters. which is to say i hadn't been missing them at all, i was so into the story.

Fire and Ice, most likely. It begins with "Some say the world will end in fire, others ice" or something like that, I remember studying it in high school.

Oh well everyone is entitled to their opinions, I'm one of the people who has really enjoyed each of the books so far. I don't think I could number them out of which I enjoyed the least or most, it's all one story for me, there has been slow points and really tense or exciting moments in every one of them. Cheers. Pretty much this. The Reek storyline is one of the most compelling, emotionally jarring reading experiences I have ever had. I'd get to the end of each Reek chapter and turn in the book to count the number of pages until the next one. It turned one of the characters I most despised into one of the characters I most loved and made me understand his whole journey in a completely different way. From his interactions with Lady Dustin, to the care he took of Jeyne Poole, to his reunion with Asha, the Reek storyline was the highlight of the book for me.

I have to agree, it really came into picture for me how much i loved reek's story line when i was talking to my friend who just got on book 4 and i just kept thinking that was when reek started to come into play it's just any amazing and well written part of the books and one of my favorites so far within the series.
