----------------------------------------------------------------------- Sony Corp. said Friday it will slash the price of its much-anticipated PlayStation 3 video game console in Japan by 20 percent, heating up the competition in the next-generation gaming war against rivals Microsoft and Nintendo.
Sony will cut the domestic price of its basic PlayStation 3 model to 47,600 yen, or about $410, from an originally planned 59,800 yen, or $515. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
O_o juicy price wars going on. Hopefully US prices will drop as well.

Yayyyyy, more attainable PS3s :D

At $410, it will dominate any other console, except maybe the Wii.
|
Not just that: the cheap version of the PS3 will also feature an HDMI port, which is apparently important... for some reason... or another...

Eh, only price drops in Japan. Nothing to get excited about.

you know for double the cost i can get probably 8x the playtime with the games i would buy for a pc. Consoles have their place, namely in single player gaming, but the best single player games last what, 40 hours? If youre lucky? I have probably logged several thousand hours into each game for the various franchises i have played over the last decade for the pc, mostly in multiplayer. On top of that, that machine (being the pc) has also fulfilled any number of alternative services for me at the same time (music, movies, knowledge, etc etc). I fail to see how anyone can possibly justify $600 for a machine which will be eclipsed in under a year by its slightly more expensive pc counterpart.

If you want to look at it completely from a price perspective, an mmorpg would probably be the most cost effective way of wasting your time, but that doesn't necessarily make it the best.
Consoles are good for the social aspect, I mean real interaction with people not what you get in an mmorpg. Getting drunk and playing console games with your friends is fun as shit. Whereas getting drunk and playing an mmo just makes you a sorry fuck
taht being said the wii thing looks like it would be more fun with friends

b/c certain types of games that some people like to play, do not come out on the pc at all? other than the x-box games, only a small fraction of console and pc games actually overlap in content. So if the type of games that consoles have is your thing, then you go buy a console system. Simple as that.

Multiplayer on a console pretty much sucks. Unless you have an insanely huge TV, split screen looks like crap. LAN parties are much better. And besides, if you're going to have like a party or something, just ask someone to bring their console

dunno about you guys, but i want a wii so i can play castlevania 3 with a gamecube controller

yes yes youre all right. I do miss games like final fantasy and metal gear, those kind of experiences cant be had on the pc. I guess i just dont consider the cost of the console worth those new memories since they are so brief. Then again, i cant say i have any particularly strong memories of any pc games. Most of my most solid gaming memories have come from events unfolded on a console game.
