We had 2650-2900 responses, depending on whether they finished the survey or not.

Well, yeah.
I think the spike at age 25 is an error. It's possible that people over the age of 25 chose to answer that they were 25 because they did not know there was a 2nd age poll. If you compare the number of responses to the gender poll to the number of responses to the age polls, this theory becomes more likely.
You can vote in polls without an account.
I wonder what the "other" respondents identify as.
It's unreal to me that most people on TL aren't from the USA.
60%! But far less than 60% of respondents indicated that they'd never spent money on eSports stuff. Money doesn't equal contribution?
A little over a third of respondents adblock TL's ads.

Regarding the final esports question. Technically buying the game or going to blizzard or gaming events are esports related so pretty much everyone who has gone to blizzcon, or bought the game would answer yes. Also, I have gone to MLGs and stuff where I didn't pay so what does that count as?
I voted that I post a moderate amount but with all these posters who have only been on TL for 2-3 years and passing my post count easily makes me almost want to post rarely lol.
Should be cool to see the results at the end of this.
Average contribution. I put plenty of effort and thought into posts but so do many others and I don't believe I help through anything other than that. If I contribute nothing, but "nothing" is the most commonly chosen option, I'm clearly safe too then because "Nothing" IS the average. ^___^ Special tactics.
Slaughter, I think you should have chosen an 'above average' post count. o_O

Random question, but is TL able to track account responses to multiple polls, or do you just have the total number of votes and no way of knowing who voted where?
I'm just wondering if there will be any interesting stats at the end, like correlations between age, location, education, and the other voting options, or if it's impossible to know because of how the polls work.
The results are always interesting though, and it will also be cool to track if there's been any changes since the last polls that have been done.

I have answered. I see we are well on the way to confirming that this site is primarily used by white males in their college years. Which really, is a choice demographic for advertisers, but I also like the diversity that's developing. Hopefully it gets a bit more diverse as we go.
Also glad to see there are some other people in the "36+" age bracket. Yay old people. I'll go back to my horrible ladder performance now.
Wait, one more thing - does TL actually use this census in any kind of business way? Self-reporting can be horrible.
On September 01 2013 17:40 Fildun wrote: Can someone maybe translate the US schoolsystem? Because as a Dutch guy I never understood it.
"High school" is the years 9-12 of education, with graduation at age 18 or so.
An undergrad degree is a degree you would get at a standard 2- or 4-year college or university.
A post-grad degree is something you would get in a specialized field, like law or medicine.
This should go into the OP, I think. Lot's of people are going to wonder what to vote if they're not in the US. Also, people who have a university degree higher than bachelor, but lower than phd, will probably spread out into both undergrad and post-grad categories, I think, based on how they google it...
Also, TeamLiquid.net, for anyone interested in older censuses (censi?)
Tried to vote, but it had already been done from my IP so I was unable to. From this I posit a theory:
There are actually more women than is represented by the census, their boyfriend's just answered the poll first (and they're too lazy to go through a proxy...)
I just voted (with appropriate choices for my age and posting behaviour at the time) in the 2011 one as it was linked (because I was around before that, especially when you consider 2-3 years of lurking prior to signing up) and noticed that 26 years of age was the most common then too. It would appear that a lot of those who were 26 two years ago bowed out from disinterest in SC2/failed professional SC2 attempts/having to focus more on family and/or jobs.
After answering I use AdBlock, I think a comment about that might be useful. I normally disable AdBlock on sites I frequent and sure enough, I had done the same thing on TL on two occasions. However, at least two times (the times I reenabled AdBlock) I had gotten some NSFW ads. It was nothing extreme, but some chicks in bikinis advertising a hot line or some such trash.
I think the contribution question should have been worded as "Nothing", "Small", "Medium", "High" and "Very High/Top Contributor" because I was about to answer below average, then considered my posting quality in regards to the general level so changed it to Average. It's not because I think that I contribute a moderate amount, but rather that I would fall into the average. The problem at the moment is that the majority of users are voting Nothing or Below Average which by definition is not below average.

No, it's by definition not below the median. They could all be below the average. It depends on how you quantify contributions.
A couple of questions are a bit iffy I think. "How much do you feel you contribute to the community" is about as subjective a question as you can get. I have absolutely no actual evidence to support the following claim, but intuitively, it seems like if you contribute a lot, you realize just how much work there is to be done, and your perception about how much you contribute is skewed. I love the idea of a census though!
I like how almost 80% of the people voted below average for how much they contribute, I'm thinking we have a false sense of how much the average user actually contributes. Hell, in my opinion not posting at all contributes more to some discussions than some users do.

Just a general RTS thing. If you went to a fighting game website, it would be very much different.
Also, there aren't actually that many black people in Europe, and it's mostly Europeans who have voted so far due to time differences. The number of black people might go up when more Americans start to vote after they wake up.
Asia + Europe + America is at very most 10% black, probably more like 3~5% overall. Then add in the fact that black people don't play RTS games much anyway. And you have hardly any black people.
Also, the 2nd final question doesn't have a comprehensive enough list of answers. Where is "no, but i would love to if i weren't so fucking poor" etc. =)

where's the "even my smurfs are on 4 digit postcounts due to mafia" option for the amount of posting question? There's got to be a bunch of those guys as well.
It's a pity it is not possible to see how the answers relate to each other on TL polls. Like, do the sc/bw followers vote themselves as more contributing than the dota2 ppl, are the female answers significantly different from the male at any point, and so on. For next years census, it may be worth the effort to move it to a third party site to allow for that kind of statistics. Even if the number of participants will drop significantly. At that point you are free to PM me if you need help with statistical significance analysis.
But nonetheless, curious about the outcome, thanks for effort.

I'm more than wiling to pay to use a website (hence me having TL+), but you won't make me load dynamic ads on my computer, period.

Diving europe between western and eastern is like diving the usa between east coast and west coast forgetting about other regions such as midwest, south nord etc.By the iron curtain definition texas would fit in the western usa
Back to Europe there are many divisions of Europe between Western,Central,Eastern. For example what is the Czech republic.Eastern or Western?By the mods definition it is eastern since it belong behind the iron curtain.By realistic scholars you can not put in the czech republic in the same boat with ucraine and Russia. If anything the czech republic is more closer to Germany than Russia.

Most geographers identify themselves as scientists and geography as a fact.this is why their discoveries facts are also scientific facts
lol, lowland tundra and deciduous forest are scientific facts, words like "central" are not. It isn't exactly difficult to parse out the difference.
Edit: Since we're quoting wikipedia...
Central Europe, sometimes referred to as Middle Europe or Median Europe, is a region of the European continent lying between the variously defined areas of Eastern and Western Europe. Widespread interest in the region[2] and the term itself resurfaced[3] by the end of the Cold War, which had divided Europe politically into East and West, splitting Central Europe in half.[4][5]

are the left hemisphere of the brain and the right hemisphere also nonscientifical things? And where do you pass the line between scientifical and unscientificall.but as a side note even geographical interpretations are based on many factors:social, scientifical, geological borders etc.The notion of eastern vs western europe based on the iron curtain is in itself by your definintion nonsceitifical since the iron curtain was a purely political border made by man who lasted less than 50 years.geographically there are no major separations between wester/eastern/central europe.the actual sepration does not have geological boundries but more human and social boundries.Western europe aka France, britain,Germany(many place it in Central Europe),Netherlands,Spain,Portugal has more to do with the western culture of human right, high standard of living, world dominance and influence etc.Nothing scientifical or geological just plain human development and behavior.
I only said that simply because you can hardly find geographers that would put Rusia and the Czech republic in the same region simply because of the iron curtain.
@master of puppets
you are talking nonsense and you know it.We literally have nothing in common with ucraine and russia beside borders.we speak a latin language simmilar to french and spanish, have been part of the roman empire, have had regions owner by the hungarian and austrian empire etc.We literally only had to deal intensively with the russians after the second world war which is a fraction of romanias millenia long history. And even today our politicians try to get Romania closer to the western world than to Russia.

The point is that arguments over what constitutes "Central Europe" are inevitably tied to some form of subjectivity, and that's why having them in the first place is pretty silly.

I think the confusion is between identifying yourself culturally vs. a simple geographic reference. I don't think language references and Russian influence have anything to do with geography on a longitudinal basis. The TL census is not asking cultural question, rather geographical. Thus, if asked with a choice between Western and Eastern (there is no central for that reason) you must select Eastern because your country is a good ways East if we make an imaginary line through Europe. Poland is the most ambiguous choice from a geography perspective, imo. I think we should leave culture out of it, and simply draw a line somewhere around Finland or Poland, due South.

Poland is the most ambiguous choice from a geography perspective, imo. Why bring up culture?
I find that Risk is an excellent teacher for geopolitical divisions. It also has taught me that Australia is the best continent ever, and made it so that I can pronounce Yakutsk and Kamchatka.

I remember a similar argument on a previous Census because Central America was listed as North America or something like that. I would be surprised if they managed a division that didn't end up generating an argument.

To be fair, TL could argue about whether or not water is wet. Part of the reason why I keep coming back, the other part is KBB.

I still claim that Poland is in Central Europe. We used to be the biggest country in Europe, we also used to not exist at all (wiped from the map) so I can choose whatever I want

Hey, you really really should have a "mixed" option for ethnicity/race. I don't identify with any of those options since I'm half-white and half-indian, and I KNOW there are many others out there who are also mixed and share my feelings on this. I put "Other," but I don't really feel like that encapsulates who I am. I know most surveys overlook this too (hell, people call Obama black. He's not black. He's mixed.) but that's not really an excuse for anything.
tldr: I'm proud of my MIXED heritage and would like to have a proper option to represent myself on this census.

And we are maybe even more educated than that. I voted High School even though i am studying for a Masters (in Denmark undergrad is not as much as thing as it is in the states).

Age Polls total 1774 Education Polls total 1597
You can't really draw those kinds of comparisons in a census like this, not with this much precision.

Touche. I figured odds were higher that people would vote in both age polls instead of not voting on the education poll (but that doesnt appear to be the case)

Considering that the Gender Poll adds to 1762, you can definatelly gather that some people didn't vote in the Education Poll. A small amount probally also voted in both Age polls, but in the end the point is just that you can't expect such precision from polls done this way.

I wasnt expecting precision, which is why I asked the question. I also said that you can gather that people didnt vote in the education poll when I said "but that doesnt appear to be the case"
Then there is the issue of honesty in an online poll.

There's also a good chance that some people didn't respond to every poll due to laziness, not caring, or not being able to identify with a particular answer... so there may be slightly different subsets of the TL population per poll. It'll be close enough to notice the large disparities (e.g., male vs. female gender), but probably not good enough to take those minute disparities (e.g., high school vs. age) to heart.

Also in some school systems e.g. New Zealand, you can graduate before the last year of school (and go straight to uni) at 16-17.
Pretty funny to see a post like that from someone who does nothing but stir drama and complain and get into ceaseless arguments no matter how hard he's being proven wrong.
Plus the fact that someone who's "top 5%" in his university class doesn't even know his country is in Eastern Europe makes this all the more amusing.
On the education bit, what's the difference between some undergrad and undergraduate degree?
Also, a post-grad is also a master's degree (or passing quals in the US). It's quite a way from a doctorate. I don't think 12% of TL are doctors and lawyers.
On September 02 2013 04:06 Manit0u wrote: Why are there only Western and Eastern Europe options? I live in Central Europe, it says so right on my time zone... What's the criteria? The old Berlin Wall division?
The concept "Eastern Europe" makes absolutely no sense, and hasn't for a long time. Especially if you lob in Russia. For example, some Eastern European Countries are west of Austria. And Greece is both south and east of half the Eastern European countries. Furthermore, Russia is very separate. I cannot imagine that someone who lives in Poland should be in the same geographical area as someone living in Kamchatka.

GET OVER IT
Get over what? Someone on the east coast of the US is as close to Kamchatka as someone in Poland. This is a silly way to talk about TL geography and we make fun of that. Welcome to the internet.
On a more serious note, we're probably mostly interested in time-zones here, someone in the Russian far-east is in the Korean time-zone which changes their perception of SC2 events.

I told you to take some geography courses in Romania and tell me in which of them Romania is in Eastern Europe.but i bet you never passed the baccalaureat so you would never know what they teach in Romanian school.200$ says you never passed the 8th grade cause this is basic course material for the final 8th grade exam.
@ Ghanburighan
In the eastern region Europe ends at the ural mountains. And the geometrical middle of Europe actually passes somewhere through romania and Poland I think.this why a lot of people say a Central Europe exist double by the fact most countries in the region have a common history relating th ethe austrian and hungarian empires. Also because non of the other european countries like Romania,Poland,Hungary etc do not want to have anything to do with Russia.Putin is still very active in the area and still has claims of area of influence. The last thing that part of the world needs is to fall under russian control again.

Believing Romanian textbooks of all things over internationally-reputable encyclopaedias is laughable at best, especially in matters that deal with international politics, history and relations. But hey, you're just another one of those people who believes the teachings of an underfunded and corrupt third-world-country education system staffed by underpaid and largely unprepared teachers has more credibility than an assortment of high level sources from various countries. How very typically Romanian of you.
And nope, nice try, if predictable. From every standpoint but ethical, intellectual and that of the mindset, I'm every bit as Romanian as you are. The fact that I'm not a bullshit-fed "patriot" doesn't make me any less a Romanian, nor does it mean I failed a laughably easy exam. But hey there you go.
I'm done here btw. If neither reasoning nor the words of a staff member reciprocating what us plebs said and believe is impactful, then this is more or less the equivalent of trying to argue with a brick wall.

Because there can only be 10 options for a poll? And obviously they prioritize the regions that they suspect would be a leading demographic anyway...
How much does an average user contribute? I don't contribute much at all, so that probably won't be average, and i get you don't have to be snipealot or shellbot to be average, but i find it hard to assess anything in between.
Does the participation in the poll count as contribution?
Done xD Always fun doing these. ^^ Love you for the gender options, guys.
Also, does buying beer for progamers and fellow nerds at live events count towards "contributing to the community" and "pay for esports in another way"?
I definitely don't post as often mostly because I feel like I wouldn't contribute. Some of the conversations that go on around here are so rich and I don't like to interrupt them. I don't have the knowledge to keep pushing them forward.
So I guess I'm a TL spectator?
Also, there are a lot of people who don't like to listen to the material I'm interested in. Not saying that people don't listen very well, but its kind of controversial.

By Euro-centric I really mean predominantly populated by Europeans rather than focused on European affairs.
Looking at the viewer numbers for WCS, it seems that there are more people watching SC2 in Europe than the US atm. Not sure how Dota 2 affect it. But E-sports in general seems to grow more in Europe than the US now. (Personal hunch, don't take it as fact)

Interesting. If 25 is a statistical anomaly, then the bell curve centres on 23 more or less. That actually lines up fairly well with our community's age distribution from previous census. (Acknowledging of course that this was voluntary and not random.) 2010, the centre looks like 20, 2011, I think it was 21. So the missing 2012 was probably 22.

It most probably is an artefact, just because part 1 of "how old are you" ended with 25 years and some people might have clicked it before noticing there actually is a part 2.
I selected "other" as ethnicity b/c I am exactly 50% asian and 50% white. This has troubled me in a lot of polls and I am not quite sure how to answer the question...

i spend money to watch VODs (code S), so i voted for "other". i think that are many ppl like me, you should add it next time and it's good to see that most of us are 23-25. means that im not that weird :D
To the question "I wonder what "others" identify as" when it comes to ethnicity: my mum is asian, dad is european, i'm proud to be a metis and i am very much attached to both cultures. So i couldn't find myself anywhere in these categories but "others".
