In your eyes, who is the most accomplished sports player ever? I would have to say Tiger Woods because he is on his way to becoming a billionaire. After overcoming a diverse family from racial remarks being Thai and black, he has gone a long way. I respect him greatly for his accomplishments and becoming the first of his kind, an african american golf player. much respect TIGER

What do you mean (US athletes here, I'm not up on the international scene)?
If you mean the pro-athelete who has accomplished the most given a disadvantaged situation I say Mugsy Bogues.
If you mean the athlete who has contributed the most to any sport I say Michael Jordan.
If you meant the athlete who set the biggest racial prescedent I say Jackie Robinson.

wayne gretzky contributed the most to any sport if it wasnt for him hockey wouldnt be as big as it is now if it wasnt for him i doubt that usa would have as many teams as it does now

i dont really watch golf that much i know tiger woods dominated everyone but i dont know if he did by that much i dont even think hes number 1 in the world anymore he was only number 1 for a few years i dont really find that to impressive for the best athlete of all time meybe im wrong and he still is number 1 i dunno i dont watch golf that much also golf isnt even a physically demanding sport he should stay number 1 for longer then mj or wayne gretzky to be the best athelet of all time

Gretzky, Lemieux, and Roy
Well... its the Stanely Cup Finals... I can't think about any other sports right now. It's impossible to do.
Go Devils !
|
i love Lemieux i think he would have actually been better then gretzky if he had been healthy his whole career but he didnt do as much as gretzky for the game i still like lemieux 100times better then gretzky and think lemieux is better but i never saw gretzky in his prime i wasnt born tt and roy i dont think he has done as much for the game but he is the best goalie of all time so u gotta give him that both good choices but i dont think they should even be on the same list as gretzky he just did to much for the game not to mention his general mananging job for team canada hahahahhaa americans

pele. considering no american sports are played worldwide (well basketball kinda but the level of the nba is so much higher than any other league it hardly counts. ), claiming any player of such a sport is the most accomplished ever is just silly!
so pele, as he is the most accomplished player in the most played sport.
|
pele how good did he do at soccer did he dominate ? like im just wondering how much he scored compared to other players if pele isnt a soccer player i guess im just a idiot again but cuase when i say his name in my head is paley or somehing -- so if hes not people flame me please but i am pretty sure i got the guy right i just dont know how his name is spelt -- i remember when i was little playing soccer i would try and do his move where he kicks it from behind him over his head truly amazing ~_~

Roy did do a lot as far as changing the way the game is played, its just very subtle. Look at Giguere... he's an improved Roy clone, with the way he plays percentages and angles, always in the butterfly. A lot of goalies are, Giguere just most notably so. And when you have goalies playing like that, it really does change the way the game goes.
But I agree with the sentiments about Gretz. Though Lemieux did score 5 goals 5 different ways (Even strength, PP, Shorthanded, Penalty shot, and Empty Netter) (:

pele won the world cup 3 times (in 58, 62 and 70). considering the world cup is only every 4 years; that is one hell of a feat. (I think there might have been one other player on brazil who played in all those world cups but im not sure, either way that player didn't make near the same impact pele did. )
considering there are only 3 countries that have won the world cup more than 3 times (germany italy and brazil, brazil 5 times (also in 94 and 2002) and germany+italy 3 times), leading your team to victory 3 different times is just amazing. (should be noted that the brazilian team rocked without him too, but still. it's like france in 98, the team owned hard and would've done very well even without zidane, but with zidane they were the best team in the world by far. (shown in the final game against brazil where brazil got outplayed and lost 0-3 despite france getting one player sent off the field. ) (and was the best player on brazil every time.. )
he's also the only player who has scored 1000 professional goals.
you could possibly argue that maradona was a better player than pele, but he's not as accomplished. (I also think zidane at his very best, for example during the finals vs brazil in 98 where he scored 2 goals (as a midfielder) and did pretty much everything else as well, could rival him, but he hasn't accomplished enough either.)
I don't know the american/canadian obsession with statistics in sports though, I guess its cause your sports are so boring you need something else to entertain yourselves. =[
problem with pele is I've never seen him play a full match so im not aware of _how_ amazing he was, however he did get awarded "player of the century" in 2000 and he IS the most accomplished. maradona and zidane have both amazed me in full matches.

Shuemacher, hes the best driver ever-.-

Curious, I feel very much the same way about Soccer. Personally I don't obsess over stats, but they are thrown at us all the time. For instance, Ken Danekyo (Devils defenseman) has played in the league 21 years and scored ~35 goals (: no, he's not a scorer! heh ). I know this because everytime he scores one, its a big thing.
I also know that Martin Brodeur (goalie) has a lifetime GAA just above 2.00, and a playoff GAA below 1.90 (lowest in the modern era, minimum 50 games). But I really only know the current stats going around in the league, aside from my team's. A way of "comparing cocks", so to speak.

obsolete what is that "something" else which we need to entertain ourselves with while watching soccer? soccer teams don't have cheerleaders (as people are more than happy with just watching the game), there is rarely ever a spectacular show or whatever during the half-time, there's no rave party during the presentation of the players or anything like that.
soccer fans love the game, and that's why we watch/play it. =]

I think if you compare football american football baseball basketball and hockey
the list goes like this
football basketball hockey american football baseball
american football and baseball being tied for 5th cause they both suck donkey cock, hockey also sucks quite a lot but less than the latter two.

Hockey, like soccer, requires being a fan/player to appreciate. I find myself bored to tears during soccer games. I typically change the channel. To each his own - its all a matter of opinion, on this topic.

"hockey, like soccer, requires being a fan/player to appreciate"
do you think baseball or basketball or american football are any different in this aspect? you realize that 99% of europeans would rather watch fucking teletubbies than a game of american football or baseball, right? (basketball not included cause that game gets some exposure due to not being totally horrible, some europeans like playing this and several are fans. )(this caused by NONE of us being fans/players of american football/baseball. ) there's no such thing as the european gene for hatred towards american sports yo~~
|
I can appreciate basketball, but I'm not a fan, and I can appreciate soccer, sorta, but I'm not a fan of that, either. Baseball I'd prefer to not exist, and share in your hatred of it.
American Football is, for me at least, a Sunday affair, because as sports go, I really don't find it that entertaining either. There is a good amount of strategy, but the game is, in my opinion, too slow paced.
But I meant genuine appreciation, sitting-on-the-edge-of-your-seat-OH-MY-GOD-that-was-nice-WOOHOO! kinda of fandom.

he scored 1000 goals ur kidding me

american football u need to be a fan and appreciate it same with baseball for some reason i hate both those sports and i get bored watching them

you're obviously completely devoid of any sort of comprehensive capabilities, so messaging you on msn seems rather useless.
I'll give you one more shot though :
the next time you want to correct your earlier posts, or add some new information, and you just posted your post, EDIT THAT POST instead of making another one. and if you fuck up once that's okay, I've made two posts in a row too. but don't make a third one. and don't make a fourth one. and don't make three new ones after I specifically tell you to stop replying several times in a row.

err
This one's easy. I don't even like baseball, but there's no question the answer is Babe Ruth, so long as we're going by "most accomplished within the sport." He was so far above and beyond any other player of his era, and of any era since, really.
To be fair, however, I would agree that the only sport really worth considering is soccer, since no other sport (except perhaps cricket) has anywhere near the breadth of appeal that soccer does.

MJ >>>>> Pele Pele was big cuz at that time soccer was totally different played. I know very well soccer/basketball history and I red 2 books about Pele. Without MJ, Chamberlain dominated at his time really bad (he scored 100 in a game) and is almost forgotten nowdays. The today sport level(money, competition, trainning) is a lot higher than 70'. Now, no soccer player can now accomplish what MJ did in basketball. Maybe Sergei Bubka'performances (ownage) can be compared with MJ ones,
but still..... from my point of view MJ is the best...

But Zidane is arguably the second best french player ever, a lot of people still consider Platini to be better then Zidane. But i do agree that the most influential and most well known athlete of all time is Pele. He is/was the most well known athlete in the world.

Gretzky was not only an amazing player, but he also essentially started the interest in hockey expansion when he went to the Kings. Since then there are, what, 8-10 new teams in the NHL?
|
Norway28665 Posts
ya I know platini is by many considered the best frenchie through time. but I think zidane has surpassed him now, and if not yet then im sure he will before he retires.

Zidane certainly could, and you never know the french have a lot of very good young players. Cisse looks like he is going to be a monster forward.

Most accomplished: Arnold Palmer
Most accomplished with big disadvantage: Jim Abott, pitched for the Angels only one hand in 1989.
Biggest racial accomplishment: Jackie Robinson
Tragedies - Robert Edwards had 1500+ yards and 17 touchdowns as a rookie in 1998, but broke is leg in the playoffs and touched the ball for the first time since then last season for the Dolphins.
Best players ever in... Football - Ronnie Lott and Barry Sanders (would/should have broken recrod - retired at age 33 I think?) Basketball - Wilt Chamberlin and Michael Jordan Baseball - Lou Gherigg and Pete Rose Hockey - Bobby Hull and Wayne Gretzkey Racing - Richard Petty and Cale Yarbrough Golf - Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods
|
Bobby Hull and Gretzky for the 2 best hockey players ever? ROFL. Have you ever heard of THE SIXTY SIX. (I have nothing against bobby here)
The real and approved list goes like this : (its considers only soccer + the 4 major north american sports)
1-hockey 2-Basketball & Soccer (pretty close) 4-american football (only playoffs are entertaining) 5-baseball

dude you're canadian, the only reason why you guys like hockey is that it's the only sport played outside canada where you don't suck. it's like that with stuff like cross country skiing too, if I lived in denmark I'd hate it but as im norwegian (and we are the by far best nation on earth in cross country skiing ) I like watching it.
norway isn't very good at soccer at all (and I dislike watching them play unless it's an important game cause they play the most boring soccer in the world) however soccer still rocks. it's the only game people all around the world are able to appreciate, cause it's the only sport (basketball should get a honourable mention, but I don't like it. I can see why people do though, and I'm able to respect the opinion of people who like that game. however if you watch american football without cheering for one of the teams then you should find something better to do, seriously. ) where you don't _have_ to cheer for one team to be entertained. =[
|
I'm not Canadian... and no, you don't have to cheer for one team to be entertained in hockey. I watch many games over the course of the year with an objective standpoint... Particularly games in the Western Conference, because they don't effect the Devils very much (:
In football, yeah, you do. It's not that exciting a sport, from an individual objective viewpoint. To most people, at least.

Drone.......i really really wonder why Norway isn't into hockey. Okay, its a Nordic country, close to Sweden and Finland which are 2 hockey forces. Norway's got only ONE NHL player (Knutsen). i really dont see why. Is it a lack of interest or a lack of talent?!.
Norway's got everything they need to play hockey
1-Money 2-cold temperature 3-about 5 million people (same as finland) drone, have you ever skated ? rollerblading doesnt count
|
bro, i dont see why you like the devils so much. they have a great goalie and thats about it. all their stars are gone.
|
Norway28665 Posts
I've skated. it's really fun. I've also played a slight bit of hockey (very little and a very long time ago.) it was very fun.
however watching it? no. =[ sports where muscles are more important than artistic capabilities suck. in fact sports where you have to lift weights to perform very well all suck. =[ (and no, that's not important in soccer, there are countless examples of weak great players, in fact mostly everyone who will be remembered as truly great were not particulary strong. )
I'm just really concerned about stuff being aesthetically pleasing. =]

how come [GG99]SLAYER and [GG8]sVEN@abs are in the army and Liquid`Drone is not ?
|
|
Norway28665 Posts
well first of all, I'm supposed to go to the army next year. (sven and slayer are one year older, the base serving time is 10 months. )
second of all, im not going cause i'm a pacifist (not really but I'm telling them I am based on how the norwegian army has been operating the past years, how it has moved from being a defence into being an attackforce etc and I don't want to participate in such an imperialistic force ^_^;; ) and the rules are somewhat complicated so im not going to explain how it works, but im going to study next year and then sometime (no idea when) i'll have to do some sort of community service kind of thing instead of going to the army.

Drone? The Devils have a player who is 5'7" and 175 lbs. He's tiny... but he's on the starting line-up of a team in the Stanely Cup Finals. You can be good just by having a lot of heart and work-ethic, too, not just natural size.
rizzer - I don't pull for the team with the biggest payroll. I root for the team I have since I knew what loyalty was. Oh... and as for having a lot of "stars", why don't you ask the Rangers what that got them? Biggest payroll in the league for almost 10 years, and they haven't made the playoffs in 6.
Devils are a team built from the ground up. We get promising players with a lot of drive and who really love the game in the minors, and gradually bring them up. And look at where it has us.
|
Norway28665 Posts
5'7" 175 sounds like a lot of muscle to me.
he's just small.
bebeto (whom was one of brazils three attackers-of-doom during world cup 94 and who scored a couple of memorable goals) was probably like 5'2" and 120 pounds. (probably exaggerated but im honestly not sure. )
he also had a shoe size of like 36 norwegian size which I guess is like 6-7 in american size
|
remember the name Freddy Adu, he might just make soccer a mainstream sport in the US.
|
Well, I'm a mere 17 and 6'0" 210 (:
but strength without skill in hockey is about as useful as a door without a wall. Stickhandling, shot power (which comes mostly from your wrists, not your arms), accuracy, passing, skating... these are all more important than strength. If you're strong, well, then thats a bonus... and you probably worked hard to be that way.
But there are some really big guys in the NHL, nowadays. One player for the Senators is 6'9" and 260 lbs. ):
