In your eyes, who is the most accomplished sports player ever? I would have to say Tiger Woods because he is on his way to becoming a billionaire. After overcoming a diverse family from racial remarks being Thai and black, he has gone a long way. I respect him greatly for his accomplishments and becoming the first of his kind, an african american golf player. much respect TIGER

What do you mean (US athletes here, I'm not up on the international scene)?
If you mean the pro-athelete who has accomplished the most given a disadvantaged situation I say Mugsy Bogues.
If you mean the athlete who has contributed the most to any sport I say Michael Jordan.
If you meant the athlete who set the biggest racial prescedent I say Jackie Robinson.

i dont really watch golf that much i know tiger woods dominated everyone but i dont know if he did by that much i dont even think hes number 1 in the world anymore he was only number 1 for a few years i dont really find that to impressive for the best athlete of all time meybe im wrong and he still is number 1 i dunno i dont watch golf that much also golf isnt even a physically demanding sport he should stay number 1 for longer then mj or wayne gretzky to be the best athelet of all time

Gretzky, Lemieux, and Roy
Well... its the Stanely Cup Finals... I can't think about any other sports right now. It's impossible to do.
Go Devils !

i love Lemieux i think he would have actually been better then gretzky if he had been healthy his whole career but he didnt do as much as gretzky for the game i still like lemieux 100times better then gretzky and think lemieux is better but i never saw gretzky in his prime i wasnt born tt and roy i dont think he has done as much for the game but he is the best goalie of all time so u gotta give him that both good choices but i dont think they should even be on the same list as gretzky he just did to much for the game not to mention his general mananging job for team canada hahahahhaa americans

pele. considering no american sports are played worldwide (well basketball kinda but the level of the nba is so much higher than any other league it hardly counts. ), claiming any player of such a sport is the most accomplished ever is just silly!
so pele, as he is the most accomplished player in the most played sport.

pele how good did he do at soccer did he dominate ? like im just wondering how much he scored compared to other players if pele isnt a soccer player i guess im just a idiot again but cuase when i say his name in my head is paley or somehing -- so if hes not people flame me please but i am pretty sure i got the guy right i just dont know how his name is spelt -- i remember when i was little playing soccer i would try and do his move where he kicks it from behind him over his head truly amazing ~_~

Roy did do a lot as far as changing the way the game is played, its just very subtle. Look at Giguere... he's an improved Roy clone, with the way he plays percentages and angles, always in the butterfly. A lot of goalies are, Giguere just most notably so. And when you have goalies playing like that, it really does change the way the game goes.
But I agree with the sentiments about Gretz. Though Lemieux did score 5 goals 5 different ways (Even strength, PP, Shorthanded, Penalty shot, and Empty Netter) (:

pele won the world cup 3 times (in 58, 62 and 70). considering the world cup is only every 4 years; that is one hell of a feat. (I think there might have been one other player on brazil who played in all those world cups but im not sure, either way that player didn't make near the same impact pele did. )
considering there are only 3 countries that have won the world cup more than 3 times (germany italy and brazil, brazil 5 times (also in 94 and 2002) and germany+italy 3 times), leading your team to victory 3 different times is just amazing. (should be noted that the brazilian team rocked without him too, but still. it's like france in 98, the team owned hard and would've done very well even without zidane, but with zidane they were the best team in the world by far. (shown in the final game against brazil where brazil got outplayed and lost 0-3 despite france getting one player sent off the field. ) (and was the best player on brazil every time.. )
he's also the only player who has scored 1000 professional goals.
you could possibly argue that maradona was a better player than pele, but he's not as accomplished. (I also think zidane at his very best, for example during the finals vs brazil in 98 where he scored 2 goals (as a midfielder) and did pretty much everything else as well, could rival him, but he hasn't accomplished enough either.)
I don't know the american/canadian obsession with statistics in sports though, I guess its cause your sports are so boring you need something else to entertain yourselves. =[
problem with pele is I've never seen him play a full match so im not aware of _how_ amazing he was, however he did get awarded "player of the century" in 2000 and he IS the most accomplished. maradona and zidane have both amazed me in full matches.

Curious, I feel very much the same way about Soccer. Personally I don't obsess over stats, but they are thrown at us all the time. For instance, Ken Danekyo (Devils defenseman) has played in the league 21 years and scored ~35 goals (: no, he's not a scorer! heh ). I know this because everytime he scores one, its a big thing.
I also know that Martin Brodeur (goalie) has a lifetime GAA just above 2.00, and a playoff GAA below 1.90 (lowest in the modern era, minimum 50 games). But I really only know the current stats going around in the league, aside from my team's. A way of "comparing cocks", so to speak.

obsolete what is that "something" else which we need to entertain ourselves with while watching soccer? soccer teams don't have cheerleaders (as people are more than happy with just watching the game), there is rarely ever a spectacular show or whatever during the half-time, there's no rave party during the presentation of the players or anything like that.
soccer fans love the game, and that's why we watch/play it. =]
