MJ >>>>> Pele Pele was big cuz at that time soccer was totally different played. I know very well soccer/basketball history and I red 2 books about Pele. Without MJ, Chamberlain dominated at his time really bad (he scored 100 in a game) and is almost forgotten nowdays. The today sport level(money, competition, trainning) is a lot higher than 70'. Now, no soccer player can now accomplish what MJ did in basketball. Maybe Sergei Bubka'performances (ownage) can be compared with MJ ones,
but still..... from my point of view MJ is the best...

you could possibly argue that maradona was a better player than pele, but he's not as accomplished. (I also think zidane at his very best, for example during the finals vs brazil in 98 where he scored 2 goals (as a midfielder) and did pretty much everything else as well, could rival him, but he hasn't accomplished enough either.)
But Zidane is arguably the second best french player ever, a lot of people still consider Platini to be better then Zidane. But i do agree that the most influential and most well known athlete of all time is Pele. He is/was the most well known athlete in the world.

Gretzky was not only an amazing player, but he also essentially started the interest in hockey expansion when he went to the Kings. Since then there are, what, 8-10 new teams in the NHL?

ya I know platini is by many considered the best frenchie through time. but I think zidane has surpassed him now, and if not yet then im sure he will before he retires.

Zidane certainly could, and you never know the french have a lot of very good young players. Cisse looks like he is going to be a monster forward.

Most accomplished: Arnold Palmer
Most accomplished with big disadvantage: Jim Abott, pitched for the Angels only one hand in 1989.
Biggest racial accomplishment: Jackie Robinson
Tragedies - Robert Edwards had 1500+ yards and 17 touchdowns as a rookie in 1998, but broke is leg in the playoffs and touched the ball for the first time since then last season for the Dolphins.
Best players ever in... Football - Ronnie Lott and Barry Sanders (would/should have broken recrod - retired at age 33 I think?) Basketball - Wilt Chamberlin and Michael Jordan Baseball - Lou Gherigg and Pete Rose Hockey - Bobby Hull and Wayne Gretzkey Racing - Richard Petty and Cale Yarbrough Golf - Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods

Bobby Hull and Gretzky for the 2 best hockey players ever? ROFL. Have you ever heard of THE SIXTY SIX. (I have nothing against bobby here)
The real and approved list goes like this : (its considers only soccer + the 4 major north american sports)
1-hockey 2-Basketball & Soccer (pretty close) 4-american football (only playoffs are entertaining) 5-baseball

dude you're canadian, the only reason why you guys like hockey is that it's the only sport played outside canada where you don't suck. it's like that with stuff like cross country skiing too, if I lived in denmark I'd hate it but as im norwegian (and we are the by far best nation on earth in cross country skiing ) I like watching it.
norway isn't very good at soccer at all (and I dislike watching them play unless it's an important game cause they play the most boring soccer in the world) however soccer still rocks. it's the only game people all around the world are able to appreciate, cause it's the only sport (basketball should get a honourable mention, but I don't like it. I can see why people do though, and I'm able to respect the opinion of people who like that game. however if you watch american football without cheering for one of the teams then you should find something better to do, seriously. ) where you don't _have_ to cheer for one team to be entertained. =[

I'm not Canadian... and no, you don't have to cheer for one team to be entertained in hockey. I watch many games over the course of the year with an objective standpoint... Particularly games in the Western Conference, because they don't effect the Devils very much (:
In football, yeah, you do. It's not that exciting a sport, from an individual objective viewpoint. To most people, at least.

Drone.......i really really wonder why Norway isn't into hockey. Okay, its a Nordic country, close to Sweden and Finland which are 2 hockey forces. Norway's got only ONE NHL player (Knutsen). i really dont see why. Is it a lack of interest or a lack of talent?!.
Norway's got everything they need to play hockey
1-Money 2-cold temperature 3-about 5 million people (same as finland) drone, have you ever skated ? rollerblading doesnt count

bro, i dont see why you like the devils so much. they have a great goalie and thats about it. all their stars are gone.

I've skated. it's really fun. I've also played a slight bit of hockey (very little and a very long time ago.) it was very fun.
however watching it? no. =[ sports where muscles are more important than artistic capabilities suck. in fact sports where you have to lift weights to perform very well all suck. =[ (and no, that's not important in soccer, there are countless examples of weak great players, in fact mostly everyone who will be remembered as truly great were not particulary strong. )
I'm just really concerned about stuff being aesthetically pleasing. =]

well first of all, I'm supposed to go to the army next year. (sven and slayer are one year older, the base serving time is 10 months. )
second of all, im not going cause i'm a pacifist (not really but I'm telling them I am based on how the norwegian army has been operating the past years, how it has moved from being a defence into being an attackforce etc and I don't want to participate in such an imperialistic force ^_^;; ) and the rules are somewhat complicated so im not going to explain how it works, but im going to study next year and then sometime (no idea when) i'll have to do some sort of community service kind of thing instead of going to the army.

Drone? The Devils have a player who is 5'7" and 175 lbs. He's tiny... but he's on the starting line-up of a team in the Stanely Cup Finals. You can be good just by having a lot of heart and work-ethic, too, not just natural size.
rizzer - I don't pull for the team with the biggest payroll. I root for the team I have since I knew what loyalty was. Oh... and as for having a lot of "stars", why don't you ask the Rangers what that got them? Biggest payroll in the league for almost 10 years, and they haven't made the playoffs in 6.
Devils are a team built from the ground up. We get promising players with a lot of drive and who really love the game in the minors, and gradually bring them up. And look at where it has us.

5'7" 175 sounds like a lot of muscle to me.
he's just small.
bebeto (whom was one of brazils three attackers-of-doom during world cup 94 and who scored a couple of memorable goals) was probably like 5'2" and 120 pounds. (probably exaggerated but im honestly not sure. )
he also had a shoe size of like 36 norwegian size which I guess is like 6-7 in american size
