Summer Games Done Quick 2013 is a speedrun marathon of 5 days. Experienced speedrunners are invited to complete a variety of games as fast as possible. The event is meant to collect donations for Doctors Without Borders (MSF). Please donate generously! Once it starts, it doesn't stop. Games are played continually for the whole period of the event.
SGDQ does a good job keeping the viewers entertained with a variety of games, prizes to win and giving the players various challenges to add in their speedruns. From any% fastest possible to 100% completion, each run is done in a unique way.
Special Events During the marathons, there are several special events to entertain! Prizes — Donate for a chance to win great prizes such as hand-knitted plushies, perlers, artwork, games, and even big grand prizes such as a real metal Master Sword, or a Wii bundle! Donation bids for runs — As with every SDA marathon, you can donate for file names of your choice and for certain challenges in runs. However there are also challenges for different routes, character choices, difficulty levels, and more! Races — If the excitement of seeing games demolished by speedrunners wasn't enough, then don't miss the intense speedrun races! Runners face off against each other to beat the game in record time! Bonus Games — Throughout the event, opportunities will arise for some of your favorite games/runs from previous marathons to be showcased despite missing from the schedule.
How to Donate:
The directions have changed from our previous marathon, please read carefully! Click the "Donate Now!" button (or click here if you do not see it). A new window/tab will open. Enter your donation amount under "Donation amount" on the page. 100% of your donation goes directly to Doctors Without Borders. Enter a comment if you wish to provide one. If you wish to suggest a donation challenge, enter it here as well, and check the "Bid Suggestion" box below the comment form. If you wish to put your donations toward an existing challenge or choice, select them here. Further instructions are on the form. You are automatically entered for any prizes you are eligible for at the time of donation. We strong recommend you do not donate using e-checks, as e-checks are delayed by several days. You will not be entered for prizes until the donation is received by the charity. Proceed to login to PayPal, or provide a credit/debit card using the "Don't have a PayPal account?" option. You should be returned to a confirmation page. That's it!
Sick, thanks for informing! It starts today and I didn't know about it yet. The previous one was the first one I watched and I enjoyed it a lot, will definitely be tuning in again for this edition.

I believe you are thinking of something else. This event does not focus on shitty games. You may be thinking of "Awful Games Done Quick" which is usually a segment during AGDQ.
EDIT: For people who want something to get hyped with and liked the old HL2DQ speedrun they should check out the new segmented WR of HL2 (with a more recent game engine):
To see some seriously impressive ABH, which is one of the main new tricks in the new engine go to 41:45. There is also a version with commentary by the speedrunners which you can likely find in the sidebar.
@Ship, they just broke Diddy Kong Racing a few days ago with a new wrong warp strat, though I don't think Toufool will debut it at SGDQ unless time constraints. Glad to see there are other people that speedrun/appreciate speedruns on TL!
I didnt hear about this til right now and I havent been this pleasantly surprised and excited in ages! A lot of cool games! Will watch as much as I can, even at work
This is gonna be good, last year was already awesome! I still can't believe that they managed to get so much donations for charity last year. I'm definitely donating this year again.
Damn, it looks like I'll have to miss the first two games due to work. Really excited about this, though! I can't wait for Amnesia, Metal Gear Solid, Super Marisa Land, Pokemon Leaf Green... hell, I can't wait for all of these games. :D

That's BlueGlass, he'll be running Ecco: The Tides of Time later on.
I have both of them ticked on but it's just not showing up for some reason. It doesn't really matter to me because I can always just watch it straight from twitch. Happy that's its being featured yet again tho.

I am really looking forward to Resident Evil then probably sleep. Eventhough i am deeply interested in Amnesia and Quest 64. The rest of the games are kinda meh till the last two days.
This RE:CV run seems rather cringeworthy. I watched the first 10 minutes when the brightness was super messed up and you couldn't see anything. Now I tuned in again and the runner looks like he's about to snap :o

Twitch said they're going to donate $50 per 1000 peak viewers up to $5,000. Pretty awesome that they're donating a lot of (or maybe even more than) the money they're getting from subscribers for the event.

That seems like the only viable reason because this game is bad.

There is a "bit" of a diffrence between a "normal" speedrun which exploits some glitches and what is done in Amnesia where it's like 99% of the time walking on top of walls and the game is basically not played anymore.
I mean.. Zelda Links Awakening is also "stupid" but at least that goes friggin quick and is therefore kinda fun ^^.

Every run is done differently. Some are ran to complete 100%, some are ran to achieve best time possible (any%). Amnesia had no restrictions, so achieving the best time was the goal. I enjoyed the run, it was quite impressive to see the glitch compilation being used. As someone said, we're not here to watch a run of the game, but to watch a speedrun. The part where he gets hit by a zombie while holding a rock and facing a wall was fucking tricky too, i don't know what you didn't like about that.
You should have seen the trick for the 2 weeks where we had not figured out about "barrel armor". You had to boost up on a portion of the explosion wall and 50-60% of runs the monster would bug out on the stairs and start running in circles. Also, without the barrel armor occasionally the monster would hit it once and walk away..... and lastly, since the trick was generally slower often you would pass out 20-30 feet before exiting.
My only disappointment was Adam did not show off the new cistern boost found out around 6 weeks ago. This would be going towards the morgue but instead of running through the flashback you boost onto a pipe and completely skip the trigger. Otherwise, run was fun with great commentary by Adam.
And im not really sure what you're expecting Veir, a glitchless amnesia run is simply a boring category that doesn't require much skill. I doubt it would even be ran if the game wasn't so glitched.
Dunno if this has been mentioned before, but those that missed it:
Twitch Shows Support for Summer Games Done Quick 2013
Speed Demos Archive’s annual Summer Games Done Quick charity marathon is currently live on Twitch, gathering some of the best speedrunners in the world for a great cause. Viewers are encouraged to make a donation to the group’s fundraiser, the proceeds of which will go directly to Doctors Without Borders. With their previous marathon raising close to half a million dollars, there’s no doubt that SDA knows how to raise funds for great causes.
To that end, Twitch is getting in on the action by offering $50 per 1,000 peak concurrents, and up to $5,000 in total. For example, if SGDQ reaches 50,000 concurrent viewers, we’ll donate $2,500, and when they reach 100,000 viewers, we’ll donate $5,000. It’s our way of showing appreciation for the incredible efforts of the speedrunning community, while encouraging you all to tune in, spread the word, and make a donation of your own.
My only complaint about SGDQ is the overall sound quality/audio balance isn't as nice as AGDQ. AGDQ pretty much everyone in the first 2-3 rows was audible, but not too loud, balanced well with donations. So far in SGDQ the balance of runner(who's mic'd), donation reader, and all others has been totally off

FFV is actually a pretty interesting run, since there are so many options available with the class system, and there's very little randomness involved...though I understand that RPG runs aren't everyone's cup of tea
I love rpg runs and I'm super stoked to see twilight princess, which has to be my favorite game from the Zelda series. Thoroughly enjoyed runnerguy2489's 100% OoT run and cosmos wind waker runs at the last event.

Street Fighter x Megaman actually came out last Christmas, which is probably why you haven't heard of it.
Love the shit out of this event. Watched it last time (AQDQ) and always spellbinds me for days. Watched ESA last week but the people are just better at SDA events.

There were a bunch of errors, it's just hard to tell due to the fact that it's a racing game and outside of any glaring blunders, the mistakes won't be noticed unless you have intimate knowledge of the route.

I'm referring more to glaring blunders, which is quite common for people in marathon runs. He hit most of the game changing moments today which was key in his WR.
Love this NES block, probably because i'm an old man and these games bring back so many good memories (doesn't hurt that the run quality has been very good as well)
Edit: 5-heart is a marathon safety thing, as it lets him get the white sword rather than having to use the wood sword the entire run. (Of course, it also allows him to take 1 more hit from the more dangerous enemies as well)

Yeah, i wasn't certain about pilotwings, but this has been a really chill and entertaining run. Graviton doing a great job of talking and playing at the same time.
Yea, they guy is going to be so sad when someone tells him ;(
You get you time after every "race". So you should have an ideal if you are crazy ahead. ... But then SC2 pros have play at the wrong speed and no one noticed.
34:21 - was the old WR (also by Graviton) But if I'm wrong, blame google.
So while it does look like he still broke the WR even with the early clock stoppage, for record keeping, they still need to know what the real time was.

I think it's common to retime WR runs anyway, specially in games with more competition. The splits done by the runners are often not completelly accurate. I remember some silly drama with Paper Mario regarding timings when Cosmo was running it.

On Cosmo's stream, he was talking about whenever a speedrunner has a good run, they retime it and count frames. Timer's are for general times and splits are just for the viewers.

Blueglass is god. Today I was inspired as I saw the light bounce off his angelic face and reflect itself upon me through Twitch.tv. Few things even approach the level of pure happiness that his laugh emanates. I am immediately forced into a state of pure euphoria. But today takes the cake. The light bounced off his cherubic cheeks, and revealed him as the savior of our gamer souls. He knows nothing but of helping those in need...and Ecco the Dolphin. As soon as I heard him suggest a duet with Pie of "Old Man River", I knew I had nothing to fear. For Blueglass has been thrust into our existence. And things will be different now. No more war. No more terror. Simply the cherubic chuckle that vibrates in the throat of our Lord, our Savior, Blueglass. And it was known henceforth that charity through gaming is key.
All hail Blueglass! Lord of Dolphins! King of Charity!

I don't think anything that crazy. Here is the run with the old tower skip, new one is only slightly faster:
Exceptionally good link to the past run for a marathon run. Only about a minute off his best and 3 off the WR (which is insanely good, as kryssstal is a god.)

This is probably the best stretch of the run in terms of "impressive to run" games. Of course other games may be someone's favorite, etc, but in terms of skill, these are definitely the highest skilled games.

Donation war for whether Zoast takes the small detour during the escape at the end of super metroid to save the critters that teach you to wall jump/shinespark. Very slight change to the ending as you can see their ship escaping as the planet explodes.

The hilarious thing is it's 30k+ raised for such a menial thing. :D

I think the estimate was supposed to take into account the 16 star race as well, since it was posted before that started. It's hard to imagine sig worrying about going 80% over his PB.
edit: The schedule shows a 1:20:00 estimate, which may have been what it was before they hit the 16 star incentive. That's still a surprisingly large number if so.
Yeah there was pretty much no way in the world that a sig 70 star goes over 60 minutes, estimate definitely seems like it was high to make room for the race.
That 70 star time was amazing for a marathon run, especially considering how many weird mistakes he was making and deaths he had. Sig is pretty much in a class of his own.

Most of Touhou games, including rip off, are often based on timings and momentum (and a damn good brain memory). It's pretty hard to keep all those things up live, the run wasn't the quickest but yeah, pretty decent nonetheless.

If you loved Super Meat Boy, you'll love Dustforce. It's harder to complete 100% tho, only 20~ people did it. But it's really fun to play "casually" too if you don't plan to finish everything with S S ranking.
Solstice run was a lot of fun, course anything PJ is always worth watching. He landed quite a few really precise tricks in there, most of which he just kinda glossed over like they were nothing, hah.
I know SDA.com since years, and this runners community rules really! Event if I know half of the game runned manually or TAS'ed, you guys really provide great entertainement bringing some not very known games and speedrun variant / duel of very well known games. All of this for good cause, MSF/DWB is an awesome charity. Keep up the good job, thank you very much !
PS: the Super metroid 100% live speedrun was trully impressive + controller cam was brilliant.

On the contrary, there's a major glitch in FF9 that skips a huge chunk of the game, but leaves Garnet permanently mute.

Oh yeah, I remember hearing about that. Apparently it's a little bit slower than the regular speedrun route, because you still have to grind hot&cold? But you're right, I did not remember that, pretty significant glitch, lol

Also, if I remember correctly...original versions of FF8 also had a Junction glitch where you could junction one magic multiple times. That's a fairly big deal.
FF7 also has the W-Item glitch, but that doesn't show up until late in the game.

FF7 has a glitch that lets you use slots to 1-shot kill anything in the game, including the final boss (similar to ff6, though that mechanic is a bit more complicated). FF8 has a few minor tricks and skips, but it's mostly just broken by early card refining for ridiculous stats.

I have no idea what he's trying to do...
Probably memory manipulation; it's very common in Pokemon runs. He was saying that there was some floor counter that he overflowed by repeatedly going up/down the stairs.
The way this game works has to do with something called "hierarchy" in the programming. Basically, in order to warp back to previous rooms, the game keeps track of the rooms you've entered, giving them each a number. The world map is "0", the next place you enter is "1", and so on. Most entrances and exits will raise the number one by one; however, a few of them will subtract the number (most common with one-entrance rooms). The thing is, the programmers only thought to have values 0 through 63 for this -- after all, how many dungeons would have more doors? Once you get to floor 64, the value rolls over to 0... and if you go through a "-1" door, the glitch happens. This can be done in a few places throughout the game. When you get this glitch, it takes you through what I call negative floors. These floors are based on different values in the ram -- floor -4, for example, depends on airship position. When going down through these floors, you'll eventually find one that depends on values in the "custom" menu. By changing those values, you can go... well, pretty much wherever you want.

Well, Pokemon is ussually run glitchless, so you probally won't see it there unless they are just showing off glitches. It's similar to what is done to Ocarina of Time, letting you teleport to weird places and have fun with items by messing with memory values. Several game use it to a smaller extent by overflowing or underflowing a certain value, such as getting infinite money by going below zero or ridiculous speed by messing with the speed values, like in Mario 64.

It's necessary, most events end like that. There is the bonus stream, but you need something like this to close it off.

especially after an event with that amount of content

I don't mind shoutouts at all. But at AGDQ2013 they went overboard by quite a lot.
Thank you to SDA/SRL for another week of quality content. Can't wait for AGDQ already, ugh I hate when these marathons have to end.. However, an amazing job reaching 250,000 and a cumulative million dollar goal.

And why wouldn't he? He has a lovely singing voice.

It was honestly one of my favourites, and that's not the friend bias speaking. Too bad it was the first run, the stream viewers weren't quite rolling in yet.

His run was actually pretty good at SGDQ but I guess he left early. Loved his paper mario runs at the event.
ive had the stream running from beginning to end on my comp and watched it on my 2nd monitor any chance i get. feeling abit lonely now that its over... cant wait for next event!
Reader:"We are at 423k if we get to 425k Spikevegeta and FootBigMike will kiss" Naegleria:"If we get to 450k they will tongue if we get to 500k we will have to switch from twitch to some other website:" Reader:"Welcome to latenight Mario Party" I think that's enough to get people watching that Video.
Tried to tune in, but just not my thing, however it is cool to see any gaming event doing awesome things, hope things just get bigger and pull in more people that enjoy it
First time I've watched one of these events and I gotta say, I have been thouroughly impressed. The runs were amazing, the game selection was great, and the donations - I couldn't believe my eyes at that total. That VOD list is going to keep me busy for quite a while.
I always enjoy the games that are terrible but turn out to be good speed runs. highlights for me was Sonic by Naegleria, doom 64 + Catechuman by Peaches_ and super mario warpless with Kosmic. After that initial death, Kosmic was on point.
Not a fan of IAteYourPie at all, but that's a really nice thing of SGDQ to do for him! I'm surprised they chose him, instead of someone less known though. Favorite run of the whole marathon was definitely tied between Luigis Mansion, Ecco the Dolphin (yolo swag god), and Super Mario Sunshine.
first time watcher, the mario 64 runner was insane, link to the past/metroid were cool, and dust force, a crazy game and i dont blame the guy at all for going a little over time, the way he made it seem easy until that point was mindblowing. really fun event!

If you liked the SM64 run, you should watch his stream. By Sig's standards, that was actually a pretty average run. :D
I always found it kind of funny how much different Sig is at marathons and on stream. On stream he laughs a lot, and makes jokes. At marathons he's stonefaced the whole time.

He put his stream to private and only streams for friends.... despite alot of people donatin for him to stream and stuff.

Rockman No Constancy to be precise, Rockman is how Megaman is called in Japan, so every Megaman game is also a Rockman game.
There's no schedule or anything in bonus streams, so noone can really say if it will be worth your time or not. Sometimes you get some nice runs, races or even casual games such as Mario Party. It's all about checking it and seeing if you like the runner and/or game.

Ahh fair enough. Didnt know that. Cool! At least he gets to go ahead and run it.

Definitely watch Yume Penguin Monogatari.
There was a Mario 64 race between SpikeVegeta and Daze. Also Megaman X and 007: The World is Not Enough, but nothing special about those about those two, unless you just want to see those games.
EDIT: Also, Mirror's Edge is such a beautiful game. So hyped for the sequel.
Kind of sad how quickly the bonus stream went south today, people shouting over and standing infront of a guy speedrunning, shoving boxes in his face and generally causing friction to the point they made the guy speedrunning leave amoungst other things. :/

What exactly happened and who did this happen to? I've been watching most of the bonus stream but most of missed this or something.

happened towards the end of bassboost's goldeneye run, viewer count tanked quite a bit and there was a lot of vitriol in the twith chat. :p
Blueglass can be so awkward... I mean he is goofy when other people run games and he watches everybody. But when somebody makes a joke or asks a question during his run he just hates it.

The story I heard from IRC for the not as dramatic/negative side (no idea how true it is as I wasn't paying attention, nor am I on location, etc):
Bassboost already completed his intended run. Looked for something to fill time until next set of games, chat suggested he try to unlock all cheats. Next set of players came in and he gave the stream to them.
Was it more of a ragequit because of interruption instead of simple agreement between players? Dunno. Could things have been done differently? Sure. I have no idea how long it takes to unlock the Goldeneye cheats (5 minutes? An hour?).
I'd say part of the viewer count dropping was just people going to sleep at the end of the run. I was staying up in hopes of possible Shadow of the Colossus but finally allowed myself to sleep when the runner came in the chat and said he wouldn't be running it. :p

Yeah, I understand why people like him, because he's genuinely a nice guy, but his lack of social skills bug me, honestly. S'ok, to each their own. :D

Same, I really cringe all the time when he is there.

Ok well I actually watched that but paid no attention to chat. In your original post you said "generally causing friction to the point they made the guy speedrunning leave". They literally asked if they could go early and he said sure and smiled. Sure there were talkative people and stuff during his runs but so was there for lots of other peoples runs and it is bonus stream after all.
