While some of these animals eat the fruit and dispose of the seed under the parent plant, others swallow the seed with the fruit and then transport it some distance before excreting it, the seed being dispersed as the result.[19] The thorny armored covering of the fruit may have evolved because it discourages smaller animals, since larger animals are more likely to transport the seeds far from the parent tree.[20]"
I'm vietnamese and i ask any of my white friends they all think it smells like shit or whatever? I think it smells quite good and taste is good too. This one time I know this dude who bought a box of Durian tasted Crackers and all the people in the room started smelling it. And all fled the scene or whatever? Me Whenever my aunt or gramma pops one of em open I'm the first there.

you open the thing up and eat it. From my perspective it smells good. Most people in my family like it. Most asians I know like it. So Yeah I am eating something that smells like shit from other people's perpective

hm well id be interested in smelling it, but ive never heard of it or seen it. definitely not carried in any of the normal stores.
Would it be in asian stores? Or only viet stores, and not chinese ones?

It has a very strong scent that can easily overpower - I wouldn't say that they smell like shit but the aroma is VERY strong. Put it in a refrigerator and then everything smells like a goddamn durian. I don't exactly like the taste either - isn't it fattening for the body?
I love avocados to death, though, even though I get a slight allergic reaction whilst eating them.

And yeah, the downside is the smell is so strong that besides from the effects said, after an hour or so of durian consuming, even your pee, your shit (the real shit - poo), and your farts will smell durian. So if you just ate durian an hour ago and let a fart in your classroom, your lecturer will probably accuse of someone eating durians in class and searches for it.

my sense of smell is not very well developped because of a childhood accident involving my nose and I tend to breath more from the mouth. Only when I take the time to smell something I can smell well. When I smell a hint of a fart I don't like to smell it in and detect it's substance Unless its my own fart.

That's not just white guys.... I guess anybody who smells durians for the first time in his life think it smells bad!! Actually, I never seen or smelt a durian before... but I heard that it smells suck but is delicious from my friends who have ever visited south-east asia and had durians. Because you are familiar to the smell, you think it smells good... Like I get used to smelling Kimchi, so I never thought it smells bad otherwise people from different countries who has never smelt 'Kimchi' feel kimchi smells suck at first or ever....
Nowadays.. koreans are familiar to western food and have it a lot. When we didnt get used to it,however, 'cheese' smelt like shit!!
That's what it is....

Your thread about durians seems pretty tame compared to some of the popular phenomenon in Taiwan. There is a "delicacy" that can be translated into "Stinky Tofu" in English. Not only does it smell literally like shit, it also tastes bad and is often merely spicy tofu wiith a unique texture. THAT is something I don't understand, and makes the smell of durians like that of a hot cheerleader.

The first time I smelt Durian, it was pretty repulsive. Not as bad as an open sewer, and actually not really comparable, but at any rate decidedly unappetizing. I got over the smell because the taste is quite different, and quite good. It's one of the most unique foods on this planet. I love it, and I think that after a while, my brain just made the association with the smell and now it's one of my favorite smells. So probably you friends just need some time and exposure.

exalted X_X i'm taiwanese and when i go back one of the things i always look for in nightmarkets is stinky tofu, i loveeee that stuff
the taste gets some getting used to i agree, and the smell is fine as long as you know it's the tofu and not some guy's fart. go out and try it, people!!!

it looks pretty normal - the outside is slightly crispy, the inside soft and juicy... brownish yellow, squarish and kind of flat... yeah sorry i don't really know how to describe tofu
it's really popular though and from a distance they look fine. google 'stinky tofu' as the literal translation is and look up some pictures

It is a culture thing that either side are used to theirs coz of their upbringing. Asians have problems when they go to say, Europe. My father always complains that its stupid to have steak and doesn't like the taste of pure meat as the main course.

Durians have a very very strong smell. your pee and fart will have that little bit of smell there. It's very thick fruit. After eating, it's like it infuse all over your blood stream and saturate your veins. I personally like it, not the pee part but the taste of durian. It's a kind of fruit you either like it like crazy or you hate it like hell. I hardly see anyone stay neutral about it.
Stinky toufu as the taiwanese claims is bad smell but taste great. I have to warn anyone who wants to try it though. Only one thing, although the smell is bad but you may like the taste. What makes me want to have a quick drink to rinse my mouth thereafter is the "after-taste" that lingers in your throat that you won't be able to stand for like 3 mins or so unless you have a quick can of coke or something like that.
