i dont understand why people seem to think that china and russia will definitely side with nkorea if there was to be a ww3
a long time ago they had alliances, but nowadays given china's relationship with the US, they cant afford to side with nkorea as they will lose their biggest trade partner and their economy will suffer a lot.
i think china would face a huge dilemma now; instead of just rushing to nkorea's side, they may sit there as neutrals for a long time or even just side with the US. not too sure about russia though, but if china has 2nd thoughts russia will definitely hesitate as well.

The US would never move an aggressive inch without talking to china first behind closed doors and probably have done a few times already. The only thing china is interested in is china. Everything else around them is purely from an economic perspective.

The biggest question for china is probably just who gets what afterwards and that's probably where china has a pretty hard standpoint. They may appear uninterested about everything outside their reach, apart from africa, but they draw pretty strong lines to anything that could disrupt any of their (bordering) regions. Open China vs US is as likely as US vs Europe.

It's save to assume that there are various shared plans between the US, SK and China on the table concerning NK attacking first.

While both sides were playing hardball, even if the DPRK had planned on going with the nukes all along, the U.S. probably could have put it off for years, if not indeed even until after the death of Kim Jong Il, if it hadn't cut off the oil shipments. North Korea isn't really so crazy: they wanted to extort aid for an agreement not to build nukes, and the U.S. called their bluff, and it turned out they weren't bluffing.
Try using both Irradiate and Defensive Matrix on an Overlord. It looks pretty neat.

North Korea threatens "final destruction" of South Korea

Reuters) - North Korea threatened South Korea with "final destruction" during a debate at the U.N Conference on Disarmament on Tuesday, saying it could take "second and third steps" after a nuclear test last week.

"As the saying goes, a new-born puppy knows no fear of a tiger. South Korea's erratic behavior would only herald its final destruction," North Korean diplomat Jon Yong Ryong told the meeting.

Without specifically referring to the nuclear test, Jon said North Korea had recently taken a "resolute step for self-defence", which he described as "strong counter-actions to a foreign aggressor".

"If the U.S. takes a hostile approach toward the DPRK to the last, rendering the situation complicated, it (North Korea) will be left with no option but to take the second and third stronger steps in succession," he added, without elaborating.

His comments drew immediate criticism from other nations, including South Korea and Britain, whose ambassador Joanne Adamson said such language was "completely inappropriate" and the discussion with North Korea was heading in the wrong direction.

"It cannot be allowed that we have expressions which refer to the possible destruction of U.N. member states," she said.

U.S. Ambassador Laura Kennedy said she found North Korea's statement profoundly disturbing.

"I also was particularly struck by the phrase 'heralding the destruction of the Republic of Korea' and find that language incredibly inconsistent with the goals and objectives that this body is intended to pursue," she said.

It doesn't matter what the poll results are, but the fact is politically NK is taken seriously by other countries.

NK's basically saying to the world, especially to the U.S., "Yah I'm a bitch, but one with thorns that pricks you in the back, you can't do nothin' to me, I have all the cards, so F you - I do what I want biatchhh!"

There's no way the U.S. would invade NK, and economic sanctions are extremely ineffective to say the least when the country placed with embargos has no real economy to speak of. Reduced aid relief does hurt the NK, but only the average NK citizen would suffer while the elite who run the country couldn't give less of a fuck.

Basically, NK has nothing to lose and everything to gain. How can the you win at a card game where the opponent has ALL the cards?

I am going to volunteer myself to be sent to SK if the need arises. I have been unfazed by NK's actions but as of late... it genuinely starts to worry me.

Why doesn't China itself remove the dictatorship and replace with something less harmful?

influencing the domestic politics of another state to that degree is very hard in this day and age. how would they justify it to the global community? do they even have the means to do so? what would they replace it with? would replacing it cause instability (which they dont want)? would the new government even be better? if you consider those questions it's not really too feasible/practical.

China is literally North Korea's lifeline, the only way NK can import anything that it lacks the technical skills to manufacture or the raw materials for.

At this point, I'm really questioning the mental state of NK's politicians and generals who are clearly intent on not changing anything. They constantly say dumb things like this that will only dig a deeper hole whilst the world is either laughing or readying for a fight. Simply put, NK is going to lose in a straight up war, as they don't have the balls to use a nuke, and are hiding behind words and threats to appear stronger. I sometimes hope some kind of task force was sent to assassinate the NK top brass, or serious military action taken by SK/USA to send an even stronger message. As a Korean, I am simply sick of these threats against my people and think it is necessary to stop this before it gets serious.

North Korea is not a state that analysts believe is going to simply crumble when attacked - ie Iraq. Its people are brainwashed to fight to the death, and it has nuclear capabilities. Nobody wants to invade the country for fear of the fallout.

Besides which, even in the event that the Chinese do go in and remove the North Korean dictatorship, they have no international authority to replace it with one of their own. No puppet government the Chinese put in place is going to endure and so an invasion only paves the way for an US-South Korea led reunification. Thus, a Chinese invasion helps the US and South Korea at the cost of Chinese lives and money, and is therefore not a logical strategy for China at all.

Why would they want to annex the land of the poor, hungry, confused people? China doesn't want to have to take care of the North Korean population.
