To all haters of women's basketball, the game just got HOT! The Bikini Basketball League is here.
The league consists of seven teams -- the Chicago Desire, the Orlando Lady Cats, the Miami Spice, the Los Angeles Ice, the Hollywood Hotties and the Atlanta Fleet Angels. Tryouts have already taken place in the different cities, and the league will get underway in the summer of 2013.
"This is a competitive basketball league, so we are definitely looking for girls that can really play," Miami Spice representatives told the Miami New Times. "It is also a bikini league in which the girls will be playing basketball in bikinis, so looking good in a bikini is a must."
The Bikini Basketball season will go head to head against the WNBA. Which one are you watching more? Your thoughts on this?
Maybe instead of free throws they could change the rules to climbing a stripper pole to the top and sliding down sexily. And instead of keeping score they just fight over the ball and whichever team is sexier wins.
As someone with a degree in physics I wonder if this is going to be possible or do they have some really well designed bikini tops or is bikini tops falling off part of the show.
Wait... so this isn't a sham league run by Hugh Hefner? Because I seriously thought it was. Sometimes gimmicks like that actually happen. What doesn't happen sometimes is a "competitive" league that decides it wants the main allure of it's mainstream sport to be boobs. Oh well. Minus 5 points for the human race.

we don't, if we were just more open with sexuality people wouldn't be interested in watching girls playing basketball in bikinis.
I'm confused as to how we are not open about sexuality; I also fail to see how thats relevant. Whether we are or not, people are going to be drawn in by this bikini thing. At least from my perspective, we watch sports for the entertainment of the competition. This bikini thing is just going to end up with a handful of guys drooling over the girl on TV
TL;DR: The whole bikini thing defeats the purpose of professional sports imo
Anyone really against this... Do you bitch about womens beach volleyball ? I mean imagine that in 1 piece suits etc, the real reason anyone watches is because of the tits, not the mediocre skill women have in sports men play.

I think that's the point. Overall, this is pretty interesting. Not just because it's attractive women in bikinis playing basketball, but because it's using sex to bring attention to competitive Women's basketball, which typically has great difficultly acquiring viewers.
Overall, I think this is actually a step forward for women and competitive women's sports, and I hope it's successful.

While this league may find a lot of viewers simply because the girls are scantily clad, I don't see how it can be taken seriously as a measure of skill.

Interesting. Boobs and basketball seems like a good combo but so is anything+boobs lol. If the girls are willing to do it and there is a market for it how can anyone say they shouldn't? OMG ITS SO SEXUAL... It's just bikinis you can go to the beach and see hundreds of girls in bikinis. Thats the only rule you need. Offense is always taken, never given. You choose how often or how much you get offended. Choose not to be offended and you life will be a lot happier.
But as to the topic at hand.... about god damn time. Nothing wrong with it. Anyone who says otherwise is lacking the concept of freedom. Only way this is bad in any way is if the women are being forced into it against their will. Otherwise I say more power to them!
Stop being haters and either enjoy it... or ignore it. You have the choice. Yay for freedom.

Worst words of advice I've ever heard in my life.
How are they the worst words of advice?
1) The last thing you should care about if what people say about your reputation. The only reason you should play attention to it is if it accurately reflects your actions (reputation is always a mirror, although often a murky one, of how people perceive you).
2) Anyone can take offense to something if it hurts them personally, so it is not much of a value at all. Even animals get defensive when their interests are unconsciously threatened. On the other hand, one should not be a fundamentalist and personally condemn people for their professions as if they are the same thing. A prostitute can be a caring mother or a negligent one, but her occupation does not determine her personality.
3) This attitude is doubly guilty because it values genetic similarity as a basis of relationship over everything else as well as shelving your moral philosophy for...some reason. Is seeing your niece beaten by her husband somehow more important than if it was your best friend? Or a mentally disabled girl who has no one else to go to?
4) Everyone gets upset when things hurt you (the two are so close that one could argue that it is a tautological relationship). Everyone seeks to avoid pain. And everyone is wrong on this subject. The condemnation of physical/mental pain as inherently evil has been one of the most crippling and nonsensical philosophies in Western history.
Anyway, this is a complete derailment of the thread. This should go to PMs if it goes any longer.

Shady speaks the truth. On the internet you can talk shit, but if you can't back it up in real life, I'd suggest not going down a path like that. Never question something unless it really pertains to you, its the fastest route to being a hater.

Don't know, it just seems that society is going down this hyper sexualization of everything from volleyball to coffee and while I hate to sound like one of "those people" it is having an negative effect on us. Through desensitization and unrealistic expectations of what relationships / sex are.

Imagine a comparison to our eSports... Here we are hoping and dreaming of esports becoming an accepted part of modern culture and we're finally seeing what we consider progress even though the main stream media has hardly taken note. Then imagine if some execs at MTV heard about it, looked into it, decided they thought it was stupid but they could make some quick cash out of it by doing a short series drawing attention to it. But what they create is a reality tv show where they get a bunch of booth babe models to play sc2, CS, etc and 90% of the show is about showing off how hot the chicks are and since they aren't actually pro players no one new who looks at the show actually thinks the games were actually anything serious.
Would certainly get more views/advertiser interest/attention than televising a tournament or a documentary about a guy like Naniwa or Huk moving to Korea and all the trials and tribulations they go through trying to make it in the GSL.

Firms which do not profitably serve the needs/wants of consumers are destined to go bankrupt, thus freeing up the resources (capital, equipment, labor) to be invested in other things. Maybe if what you're saying is true, then Huk or Naniwa will become computer engineers, pharmacists, or realtors. How can Huk or Naniwa support a family someday unless they marry a rich bitch?

Cry me a river. Neat Idea, won't watch, but I definitely find all the people yammering on about feminism and sexism to be irritating. God forbid women cash in on what God gave 'em. Is it sexist that Men's sport leagues outdo women's? No, it's because men are physically superior to women (in general) and when you watch someone compete you want to watch that competition at its most physically challenging level.
They're not hurting anyone, they're not affecting the feminist movement, they do not represent females as a whole and it seems highly unreasonable to assert otherwise. It's contained to the individuals playing the game (which they do so willingly).

I'm no feminist firebrand but representing women as something solely to be ogled at can isn't necessarily harmless. Yeah this league isn't a big deal in and of itself, nobody would claim otherwise, it's just a bit depressing for those of us who think we're capable of a bit better these days.
They're up against a wall trying to get people to watch WNBA as it is. If you don't already watch it or think about watching it, you aren't going to be persuaded to do it.
This approach might work. If they get some good airing times and a level of the competitive spirit, I see this working. Say what you want about this as a reflection of current culture. It's reflected in every part of media already. I'm sure beach volleyball gets just as many viewers looking for the strength of the serves, returns, and spikes as for the player's bodies.

Oh heavens, are you breaking the silence of political correctness? Are you actually hinting at the treatment of women as sex objects? Somebody call the internet police...

Was reading along, thinking this was all a reasonable opinion to have, then I read that you don't tip people if they flirt with you. I always tip 15% unless the food was atrocious or the service was almost never there, and then I tip 5-10%. They still have to make a living.

What the hell? That advice is good because it it's pretty damn accurate.
1. Taking offense to what people say if it's not about your reputation just causes a shit storm. It causes unnecessary aggravation, flaming (especially on the internet) relationship damage, and all other shit. You make a fool of yourself sometimes, for no fucking reason. And there are more people who will say offensive things. What are you going to do, silence all the fucking haters? And the internet is a different ballgame - even worse. Professionals (say, Day9!) don't ever ever EVER reply to all the shit that flies around the web - they disconnect themselves completely. That shit just isn't fucking worth it.
2. What the fuck are YOU going to do about what other people do for a living? Damn man (liberals especially should agree with this). You just let them do what they want - unless that impedes the lives of others - or your interests. That might sound selfish, but it's really not. He's not saying to cut out all the competition - though his gang member friend probably was.
3. What the fuck are you going to do about how other people are treated - based only on your limited perception of their situations? That's a good way to get fucking rejected. Never EVER step in on someone else's problems - but you can be there if they need you. Don't be fucking nosy.
4. If you get upset at every single fucking thing...man...what are you some high-school girl (metaphorical "you")? Unless something or someone severely injures you mentally or physically - impedes your success or is deliberately bogging down your life in any way shape or form, who gives a fuck. Let it all go.
Paraphrased.... 1. Don't give a shit about what people say unless it affects you personally. As in, heart wrenching. 2. Don't give a fuck about what other people do - let them live their lives. 3. Don't get involved in other people's personal issues. You aren't wanted there - and you (in most cases) don't want to go there. 4. Don't be a fucking pussy and be offended by everything. You'll just get bogged down mentally.
No where in that text do I infer "passivity." Nowhere do I infer "selfishness."
Good advice!

It's not the "Never take offense" part that is bad, it's the "unless" part that is bad, because it shows nothing but selfishness of a person.
#1 For example, if someone talks bad about your family, or even someone talks shit about some random races/gender/a handicapped homeless person on the street, you don't feel bad/feel angry?
#2 Not all kind of money making is good, there're people dealing drugs, cheating the systems, preying on people. You might not have anything to do with it, nor it affects you, but it's stupid when someone says "I deal drugs for underage for a living", and you say "Ok cool."
#3 If this is a good advice, we might as well as get rid of domestic violence and stuff. It's bad that people treat people badly, people treating their significant other badly is even worse. If you don't take offense a human being beating/talking down another person, then w/e
#4 This is meh, no comment. It's just a repeat of every other things, and other old sayings, although nowaday it's hard to judge what hurts you and whatnot.
Your paraphrase is not the same as the original meaning...

1. I ask myself...who is that person to me? I don't even bother to ask myself if that is true - because it likely isn't. 2. You know I wasn't including criminal activities. Why would you argue that? Don't those kind of illegal activities harm the lives of others? There you go. 3. You're reading things wrong. You take things way too fucking black and white. These arguments do not declare the mode of a human's existence or how he sees the world - they are merely principles to abide by. If I hate the world #3 is completely different than it would be to someone who cares about others but doesn't want to get involved in things he knows nothing about. I said...if someone asks you for help then it's all up to you if you want to help them - but don't go barging in on people's lives when the sum of your information about other people's problems is incomplete. Obviously...rape...murder....come on man. 4. Simply explains the reason why you would do 1-3.
I shouldn't have said paraphrase. I should have said interpretation.
If I take offense but don't show action...in the end I've done nothing. Why not instead disregard the words of the motherfuckers who insulted me - or attempted to in the first place? Why would you consider their words as valid?
-- Now, come on man - don't suggest that whoever insulted me might be close to me! IF he or she is...then his words would hold bit more oomph. ---
Judging what hurts me is as simple as 1,2.3. It really is an impulse decision. Better not to let such petty remarks hurt me at all, yo.
This is exploitation. Other than the producers and the team managers, I really question the morality of the women who think showing their bodies unnecessarily (obviously they know they are doing it to sell to the audience) is a good idea and a good way to earn money.

And are you able to provide any evidence to show these women are exploited? That somehow they were coerced into playing a game of basketball while in a bikini? That it is against their beliefs and their will?

Paraphrased.... 1. Don't give a shit about what people say unless it affects you personally. As in, heart wrenching. 2. Don't give a fuck about what other people do - let them live their lives. 3. Don't get involved in other people's personal issues. You aren't wanted there - and you (in most cases) don't want to go there. 4. Don't be a fucking pussy and be offended by everything. You'll just get bogged down mentally.
No where in that text do I infer "passivity." Nowhere do I infer "selfishness."
Good advice!
--- I feel like if we're going to do bikini basketball we might as well just go all the fucking way.
Take offense is one thing, and show action is another thing. You don't need to show in action that you don't like it. If you don't even take offense when the community/family around you, you still are nothing a bad seed.
Actually most of the rules (as explained to me) have to do with my emotions rather than whether I think they're right or wrong.
1) If someone says something stupid or insensitive, I'd say "you're wrong" but not "I hate you because you say this." That's what I meant by not taking offense. It's about remaining calm and objective. 2) Same with the moneymaking. If someone makes a living dealing crack to elementary school kids, I'd say "that's illegal" or "that's going to fuck those kids up" but not "I think you should rot in hell for doing this" because, again, me expressing anger at him probably won't help solve the problem. 3) As regards domestic violence and stuff, the same thing applies. I can tell a guy "you shouldn't hit/cheat on your wife" but I won't say "You're human trash for beating your wife/cheating on her."
Nothing about not getting offended means surrendering one's sense of right or wrong--it means learning to keep your emotions/words spoken and your judgments on other people separate.
That's why it leads to rule 4: It's a survival skill. In this world you will have to deal with people who are terrible for one reason or another, and if you simply go around getting pissed because they're terrible, you're going to wind up on the shit end of the stick more often than not.
Well tennis is the only real sport women have come to think about it... and no beach volleyball does not count, that's more like bikini volleyball. As someone who goes to watch live basketball on a regular basis I have my concerns because I usually sit higher up in the stands so maybe I'll be missing some of the magic of the sport. Oh yeah, and do they know how to play basketball? Or are they just hot and they will wing it somehow?

These talks portrait the problems of young people getting to know sex via the media. In this case: hardcore porn.
A bikini basketball league - where you probably will not see anything but 90-60-90 women - warps the perception of how women should look like. This is dangerous for girls, who´ll have trouble accepting their own bodies. But it is also dangerous for boys, if they don´t recognize that behind the meat is a real woman, that can actually be loved (and not only jerked on). --> this being only two reasons. If you look deeper into the topic of sexual pathology in youngsters you´ll find more...
And yes, I will also need to watch at least a couple of minutes. I just hope no parent will go there with their children...

It's rare to find a really hot porn star.
While this league may find a lot of viewers simply because the girls are scantily clad, I don't see how it can be taken seriously as a measure of skill.

those were four words of advice from a childhood friend that ended up becoming a gang member... a lot more honest than any advice i've gotten from anyone else. they've served me pretty well in life.
Worst words of advice I've ever heard in my life.
I have to agree. If you wish to take the road of passivity, mixed with selfishness, then do this; however I have to agree that it's some of the worst advice I have heard in my life (And it's so bad because it's almost seems like good advice at first).
As for Bikini Basketball . . . they really didn't have to call it that. It's shallow, effect, yet idiotic marketing. I really like watching Olympic volleyball but I refer watching the woman's because - "let's face it" - they all have a pretty good ass. But if you turned it into Bikini Volleyball then I would never watch it, even though the only thing that changes is the name. I don't go to the Bikini Coffee Shop in town because of the stigma of being seen there and I don't want to support a set of woman who try to make money off of their sexuality. I don't tip waitresses that flirt either. But Olympic volleyball is ever so slightly different because the sexuality isn't the focus and the athletes who are playing are athletes first and not something sexual. the reason why this marketing ploy is so dumb is because it focuses so heavily on the sexuality while falling short of actually delivering. If I want something sexy I can look up some pictures online.
Let it all go.

thanks for clarifying that! Your first post on this subject was a bit misleading.
I don't see what's wrong with this. I don't know a lot about the lingerie football league but my understanding is that a number of the women who play are actually olympic athletes and serious sporting professionals. If they havn't got a problem with playing in their bikinis, and the sport gives them a solid income than what's the problem? If your worried about kids accidently watching things they're not supposed to you have a lot of things to work through before you get to lingerie basketball

At least beach volleybal holds some actual connotation with bikinis... since it is played on the fricking beach...

it´s a difference how the naked skin is showed. The bikini league is obviously introduced in a sexualized context whereas the olympics is obviously an athletic convention. If you wanna be an athlete you better shape your body. On the other hand: If you wanna have sex, if you wanna be liked by guys (or girls for that matter) do you really need to be slim and have big boobs? Do you really have to show off your skin in order to achieve that?
Awareness for bad stuff is a necessary step. I´m not here to shut down the bikini league. I just want to show, how this actually can be bad. And maybe your kid won´t have a problem with her or his sexuality because you once took the time, thought about this issue and can answere to her/his problems adequately.
Will they do the gungnam style dance at half time?
No doubt this will be more popular than the WNBA, but damn, there is going to be a lot of pissed off people. Its really the same as beach volleyball, except for at a beach you actually wear a bikini. This is just wearing a bikini for the fact of showing your boobs. I wonder if the league will also implement a minimum boob size to play 0_0

17 is fine, know alot of people who could get six packs without needing to go to gyms or taking suppliments. of course it depands on each person but a sweeping statement like that is far from true.
people are always so quick to jump sexism... Blame the women playing for doing it and while your at it blame volleyball players because there's no reason why anyone would watch most womens sports except for the show... If you want physical perfection and skill you watch males. This excludes a few, figure skating/gymnastics come to mind but mainly team sports seem to have a pretty pathetic women showing for actual skill compared to men (which makes sense biologically)

That's total bullshit. You might as well claim that superhero cartoons are bad for boys because we can't all be ripped like superman.
don´t know about you, but I do see more and more 14-17 year old boys with sixpacks. Especially in soccer clubs you can see that. And while there is value in having a strong body in soccer, it is not healthy if they get it at that age...
what? It's not healthy to have a six-pack at 17? You have got to be kidding lmao
The hate....the hate... There´s obviously no clear universal definition of when a kid is grown out, but usually a kid still growth between 14 and 17. Here, I actually looked it up for you: http://goo.gl/h3lr5 Wikipedia puts the adolescence and puberty even up to 19 years.
Anyway... if you only look for things you don´t agree with, it´ll be hard for you to learn new things. Maybe try the Principle of charity for once? I´m just saying that, because the number 17 or 18 or 19 or 16 is not the important part of my argument.
You specifically said it's not healthy for young boys to have 6 packs from ages 14-17 did you not? Which is utter bullshit because plenty of high school to pro athletes build up their core muscles before going pro. You don't even need to lift heavy weights to do it. Stop posting nonsense.
Interesting, it's unhealthy for kids to have sixpacks and have a strong core the guy above you said!! :D Someone need's to look at the Shoalin Monks on health and core body fitness lol, is this what our fatass society thinks these days, its unhealthy to be fit? : P

Sadly, yes. They think anything under 2500 calories a day is unhealthy, not eating a lot of meats is unhealthy, and now apparently being in shape and having <10% bodyfat is bad for you too lol. It's a society where if someone is 20 lbs overweight and 20%+ bodyfat, they're referred to as "normal, healthy weight"

Was reading along, thinking this was all a reasonable opinion to have, then I read that you don't tip people if they flirt with you. I always tip 15% unless the food was atrocious or the service was almost never there, and then I tip 5-10%. They still have to make a living.
Hmmm, maybe it was more accurate to say that I don't go to places where the waitresses/baristas just flirt with me and I tip them less. And don't get me wrong, I like getting hit on and I like flirting back, but if I think someone is doing it just to get a tip . . . It's a fine line to cross. Point being, I don't like someone using their sexuality to get anything (and it's not a skill that woman alone have).
This bikini basketball crosses that thin line. If they made the uniforms sexier, sure I might watch it even though it could be the exact same amount of "sex appeal". It's like the difference between between wearing lingerie at the beach and a bikini at the beach. One is more acceptable than the other for no good reason at all.

To all haters of women's basketball, the game just got HOT! The Bikini Basketball League is here.
sorry isn't that irony in itself, it detracts from the game and shows you are only interested because of the women, yet it's supposed to be some reason people will watch?
Ah yes, Orlando has a team as always! Arena football, Lingerie football and now bikini basketball! Nothing like getting rid of Dwight Howard to bring in the BIG PLAYERS!
I'm down with this, the WNBA should play in lingerie.

It's not being open about sexuality to watch women half naked play sports, we dont watch basketball or football with Christiano Ronaldo half naked, it's only for women, it is sexist, "hey lets watch some sexy bitches play basketball, who gives a fuck about the game. Oh man I'd fuck that one" will be 80% of the people watching. That has nothing to do with an open mind about sexuality but everything to do with women considered as objects. And yeah, that wouldnt happen in Europe, or at least it would be some minor joke that nobody would consider, but the fact that this gets attention and can be considered a "good idea" is shocking to me, like another guy said, go watch some porn

Watching women playing sports in bikinis because you enjoy the female body is not sexist. Seriously some of you are just being pretentious dicks about it. Do you go outside and set up picket fences around Hooters? You know, since women in revealing attire serving food wouldn't happen in Europe. Get real.

A lot of people really don't seem to get that NOT judging people for their actions and why they do something is the best course of action. You don't know why these ladies are participating, you don't the people that made this league did. I'm sure everyone in here has figured out that sex sells and that guys like boobies. However, people in here don't know the monetary issues or attention seeking personalities that drive these girls to participate, face it some girls do actually folllow the line, "if you got it, flaunt it," (actually its a large majority of them). Some people making this league want to make a quick buck, but maybe it might turn into something like a cult sport, like Trampoline Basketball. The reason its good advice is because UNTIL you know more than 70% of the reason behind something from both sides of an argument, you shouldn't be so quick to form your own badly informed opinion.

On a side note, gotta love how, according to some, The United States are the only place in the word where women are objectified. Get real people, people are people, Americans aren't all inherently evil bible thumping sexually repressed republicans, just as people from say France aren't effeminate cigarette smoking pretentious snobs, when i hear something like "this is why people hate Americans" I think, by that logic i should hate Muslims because some of them are suicide bombers, the point is judging a whole group of people because of the actions of a few is wrong its called prejudice and its caused many problems throughout history. But this is nothing new, why do I even try and defend against pointless flaming.
This is some degree of retarded, just not sure which degree tbh.
Oh well, I don't give a shit about it either way. I doubt it will make it passed 2 seasons once the "novelty" of it wears off and people remember you can watch girls completely naked doing much hotter things than playing basketball.

Well, now I can go to a women's basketball game and not be surrounded by a bunch of lesbians. It was really creepy to go to a WNBA game before.
Yeah but now you can't use your cup holder. Many drinks will be knocked to the floor as some dude with sweatpants on gets up, turns, and tries to go to the restroom. Hold on to them brews.
There's nothing wrong with beach volleyball as an Olympic sport. It's fun to do, competitive and often more interesting to watch than regular volleyball. (and not merely because of 'chicks in bikinis')
This bikini basketball thing on the other hand is a joke in somewhat bad taste (it's so blatantly exploitative). I can imagine watching it for 20 seconds just to see what it's like - or who knows, maybe it will be riveting television - but generally it seems like the only people that would really want to watch something like this would be groups of horny guys one-upping each other with "yeah I'd do her", "no, I'd do her twice!". /yawn

It's common knowledge that women's basketball is boring. Women can't dunk like men can so no one watches it. Sex appeal lets them even the playing field with something they have but men don't. Saying that it's invalid or shouldn't be taken advantage of is misogynist.

To be honest I don't mind women presenting themselves in such a light, in industries I regard as that being appropriate for. For example, pornography or modelling, there is no other element to what they are doing in these industries, they're being rewarded for being physically attractiev.
Just this league is a complete mockery of what sport is meant to be. The WTA tour has plenty of hotties, but at the end of the day it's still something that is primarily about women who have dedicated their lives to sport, playing their hearts out to win matches of tennis. This is nothing of the sort.

I think the issue is that women can be competitive and look comparable to men in WTA and more ... technical sports (gymnastics/swimming/WTA/golf) but when it comes to brawns physical sports (NHL/NFL/NBA/(futbol/football/soccer)) you see a drastic difference in skill and it makes it more of a waste of time to watch. What does this do? It makes it more about the show then the game similar to how kpop is more about the musicians than the music (or so I've been told/come to believe).

Yeah, or even the whole foreign/Korean divide, with the former scene increasingly seeing emphasis on areas outside of pure playing ability.
The WTA is a good example though, I mean people like Billie-Jean King and Martina Navratilova really pushed for their sport to be taken seriously, and nowadays it is mostly! I just don't see how giving in and having the attitude of 'well we're playing a joke sport' will ever lead to a situation where your sport isn't perceived as a joke.
As an 18-25 year old male who loves to watch all kinds of sports, I would tune into this before I would ever remotely consider watching the WNBA.
I don't know how the WNBA does numbers wise but the only reason I see it working is because it starts during the tail end of the NBA season to suck in basketball fans, then continues into the off season of the NBA and college, so the basketball fans don't have much else to watch. With this league running the same time, I'm extremely curious to see if a whole new demographic watches this leaving the WNBA numbers more or less intact, or if they take a hit because people would rather have more sex and less sport. I do think it's a dick move to run the league at the same time though, as it basically spits in the face of the WNBA who a ton of people have put a lot of time into building.

Like I said, there is no possible way Women's basketball will ever come close enough to be comparable to the NBA... It just isn't like Tennis or sports women can excel at (gymnastics/figure skating etc). Tennis is also a "singles" so one person can push the envelope just like one woman's doing it for NASCAR but in a team sport? Well let's just say the Edmonton Oiler's are pretty fucking bad but they'd hit triple digits against Canada's female hockey team which along with the US comes in as arguably the best female hockey team in the world.
They are different creatures, the critisms of WNBA are deserved, we spectators are expected to "support" WNBA because women's rights. No. That's fucking misandry.
We watch games because they're exciting and fun to watch. Not because we have to. That's patronizing as having to hire a woman not for her qualifications but because "it's fair". The BBA makes sense even if the name is nonsense, since technically men in bikinis could enter a team as well.
The visual appeal of the uniforms give it a great marketing edge over WNBA.

The German ladies' soccer team (world champs) LOST against a team of 14-16 year olds from one of the German premier league soccer teams.
Reading the collected data on female vs. male teams is really sad. The reigning German champs lost against a seniors (like 40+ years old or something) team from an obscure team playing in the 5th league or so.
U16 team of one of the Premier League's worst teams beat the national team, goals were scored by a 13 year old.
And it goes on and on like that...
Not fast enough, not strong enough, not used to playing so rough. I know that the WNBA players potentially also cat-fight (or whatever you want to call it), but against a 6-6 guy who is pure 220 pounds of muscle, they'd just be shrugged off.

That's my point, if it was pure physical and talent qualifications, they'd be muscular and sinewy. See Wlliams sisters.
Bikini <sport> creates a woman's sport that's both pleasing to the eye and sportsmanlike.

As for the topic itself, I wonder why the NBA doesn't go with swim brief as only allowed dressing code with a few temporary tattoos for sponsorship logos. It has the same logic behind it?

Care to back up your claim, misandrist? Any physical activity that relies on speed, power, focus and teamwork to succeed rarely have women doing better. As proven by USAF gender research into equal treatment of women in all arms and ranks of the USAF. Women are biologically different from men. Hormones released by the respective reproductive organs cause physiological changes in physique, reflexes and ability. Science confirms it.
Edit: please google physiological differences between gender.

We do realise this you know? Nobody here is claiming the WNBA is on par with the NBA, or that people should be forced to watch it. Where are you getting this from? I don't watch a lot of woman's sport, but there are a lot of dedicated women who play sports and seeing leagues like this set up, not to mention Sepp Blatter's infamous comments on women's football and it must be a bit of a kick in the teeth. Is that concept that hard to understand?
Not wanting women's sport to be reduced to sexist gimmickry = being man-hating. Yes that makes a lot of sense.

You seem to have a disconnect with reality.
You dear sir need to learn to read articles and posts. The "Daily chart Olympics: Women against men" states that it depends on the sport if women are "better" or can compete with men (historical women weren't allowed so it is clear that techniques etc. were developed for the physic of a man). You are just some really angry dude who feels threatened that women can someday have the same attention because they did something amazing in physical-sports, or u are just arugin for the sake of arguing.
And again, you never replied to the essence of my post.
No one is debating that a woman boxer can't stand up to a man. But I am arguing that Bikini Basketball is not even a sport. It is just a marketing strategy to push into a market which isn't even there.(not to mention it is sexist) THAT is economics which you should maybe read up instead of sprouting all those biological semi-terminology around.
You sir, need to learn how to debate. It is the responsibility of the challenger to present their facts against the current prevailing de-facto opinion.
In this situation, that women need to appear attractive to attract spectators and their respect rather than relying on purely on physical qualifiers.
I refuse to answer your posts directly because they are simply speculative maybes and rambling. Without scientific backing of your speculation, it's really not worth commenting.
Therefore your name calling, is childish.
My scientific evidence: The research of the United State Armed Forces on viability of gender equality:
The USAF after almost a decade of research found that for women to gain the operational combat readiness of an infantry man would upon reaching the necessary stamina and strength to carry the same loads, fire the same accuracy as a infantry man, women ended on average 10-20% larger than their male counterparts.
Needless to say, I can't find the paper on google as it still is a controversial subject as it was then, I read almost a decade ago.
My argument is that Bikini basketball has to be a clothing requirement for the sport or else they'll eventually be dominated by women who have no qualms sacrificing their physique to the altar of winning.
Compare this:
with this:
I don't know about you, but as a future father, I would want my daughters to end up as attractive wife material to a potential husband after their contribution to a sport. Turning into a massive she-hulk is not my idea of marriageable material.
Let's agree to disagree and put it down to cultural differences.

You think these women will be hired because of their qualifications with the sport?
But even the WNBA players aren't hired because they are the best basketball players around but because they are woman so isn't that sexist? Whereas with this bikini basketball league the woman hired will be the best looking basketball players i.e top in their league. Its just fact that men are physical bigger and stronger than woman while woman are physically more attractive and sexual than men. So both the NBA and Bikini Basketball League will just be emphasising both genders strengths.

Let's be serious, regular "hoop"ball is pretty shitty to begin with. The ESPN highlights are fun enough but watching the game go by? Pretty repetitive
Throwing it out there but doping tests in professional sports have been extremely poor. The only time you can actually catch them riding dirty on this shit is if you get the police into it (Operation Puerto) or do a random drug test on the fly (has happened before). A long time ago, cyclists used urinate through their hands, for instance, to mix in a powder that would render the test obsolete. Athletes have managed to dodge announced drugs tests a billion times before through methods like this.
Serena has definitely dodged a random drug test by running into her panic room before. Who knows if she, or any other tennis player, is doping but some athletes don't help matters by acting suspiciously when it comes to drug tests. There was a well researched blogpost that covered Nadal's recovery periods, sudden injuries, dropouts, victories, etc. that either suggested that he was a glass superman or using some really awesome shit. But just like Serena, there's no way to prove them guilty (or innocent) unless you force them to take a random, unannounced drug test.
Innocent unless proven guilty but a cynic would probably assume all of these athletes have doped at least once before. I don't agree with damning people just because they perform well...but for a lot of people interested in professional sport, its pretty hard to believe that a lot of these athletes are perfectly clean. Especially if you follow cycling, since one Spanish police investigation basically caught entire teams using performance enhancing drugs and literally everyone good has admitted to taking drugs just to trap Armstrong.
On September 30 2012 01:06 Prplppleatr wrote: How is this any different from beach volleyball and to a lesser extent, tennis?
None. Except the women aren't wearing men's clothes.
Pehaps beach volleyball is similar marketing gimmickry although not everyone appears to share that sentiment within the sport, from Wikipedia:
'According to FIVB rules, female beach volleyball players have the option of playing in shorts or a one-piece swimsuit.[12][13] Most players, however, prefer the two-piece bikini. Competitors such as Natalie Cook and Holly McPeak have confirmed the FIVB's claims that the uniforms are practical for a sport played on sand during the heat of summer, but British Olympian Denise Johns claimed that the regulation uniform is intended to be "sexy" and to draw attention.
Tennis is a legitimate sport, in which there is a sizeable following who appreciate the skill and physical conditioning required to play the sport at the level that these women do. While people may find a Sharapova more attractive than a Serena Williams (hence her massive endorsement deals), there is still much respect for both based on their abilities to play the sport.
You really are dense if you can't see that the bikini basketball league isn't directly equivalent.
Nice Double standards you have there. Because it's name is based around the type of clothes worn and not the gender (It's been already taken, genius) formed by the creators of the Lingerie Football League is sexist and offensive but it's okay when women play beach ball in bikinis and becomes a hit sport until it's recognized as an Olympic sport despite being THE EXACT SAME GAME OF Volley BALL but on different surface and two players instead of five.
Street basketball should be it's own Olympic sport by that theory because it has usually less players and allows striking and shoving of opponents.

That's incredibly degrading. Woman don't like be looked at as something different especially if you have the misguidance to tell they aren't any good. "But hell baby, you still look good doing it"
You think that's a compliment? Edit: Seriously!!???

Street basketball should be it's own Olympic sport by that theory because it has usually less players and allows striking and shoving of opponents.
Lol, way to disregard large parts of what I said and introduce things that I did not say. Misdirection appears to be a strong suit of yours, judging by your wilful disregard of the general rules of discussion. People take the time to actually address what you say, and respond accordingly, but apparently such a concept is above your latent genius.
I may not be a genius, although thanks for the sarcasm and attitude, you on the other hand are a grade A moron.

To be honest I think it's depressing that if you tried to make a male version of this or any sport full of scantily clad men who are not in as good shape are their modestly clad counterparts playing a sport at an amateur level whilst being half naked that it would fail. Nobody wants to watch that shit!

Degrading? If you choose to play basketball in a bikney, you know beforehand that its because guys like to look at the junk in the trunk. If they don't like it, don't bother signing up.
What is next, making it illegal for woman to monetise their sex appeal? Only person who could complain that is degrading, are the woman that are playing on that court. And gues what, they actually are capable of thinking on their own.
TL; DR Complaing abt it being degrading is actually an insult to every woman who chooses to be there.

Nope not buying it. People here aren't saying that these women aren't capable of making these decisions themselves, more that the idea itself isn't overly edifying.
Likewise not all of us are against monetising your sex appeal. Modelling, pornography etc are all fine by me because they are what they are, attractive ladies making the most of this attribute. The problem for me is more when people use their sex appeal to make a mockery of hardworking, talented people in other fields and get a leg up in fields that are completely unrelated to attractiveness. Likewise the token female pickups in the world of SC2, ridiculous to see some of the bans that were handed out on those threads, but some of the posts that are tolerated here.
In before 'well that's the way the world works'. The world only works in certain ways because people accept these as normal.
Equally, such an onus is not placed on the supposed critical importance of attractiveness when it comes to males. Perhaps in sport it's the generally superior product on display, and that's a discussion worth having.

Misguidance? So you're telling me that these bikini sporting basketball babes are better than the female pro basketball players?
Obviously not, we're willing to watch them play mediocre bastketball because they look hot doing it.
Go complain to the people organising and performing this shit instead of me for just stating the obvious.
Yes, I do think it's a compliment to these women that we're willing to watch them do that just because they look that good, as I've already explained you wouldn't see the male equivalent.
If anything I'm jealous of these women, I don't pity them.

I see where you are coming from, however I do not feel it applies to this bikini league.
When you say that people should not got a leggs-up in a sport because of their attractiveness, I fully agree. Likewise, your point of female pickups holds. However, women playing basketball in bikini's are not competing within official leagues. No basketball player in bikini will face a properly clothed one. They are a brand on its own, solely for the object of entertainment (as I see it). It is not because they decide to wear bikini's, that they are going to be picked up by professional teams or gain an edge over non-properly clothed females.
As for making a mockery of hardworking people, I find that very subjective. It may be a mockery in your eyes, but does that mean that somebody can't find it a compliment? In addition, the goal of this league is not to mock professional female athletes. No, it is a form of entertainment that only aims to make a profit.
However I must admit that it should remain a different and separate league from the official pro circuit, for else it would be ridiculous.

Ah see that's what I call a post! Due in part to the lack of actual information on the website I just assumed this was being set up as a direct competitor to the WNBA as opposed to something of a novelty/gimmicky fun league.
My mistake I guess, anyway cheers for the decent reply, few and far between in this thread
i respect the wnba even though so many people don't. they train hard like other pro athletes but they get so little recognition. out of this respect, i am really disappointed with the announcement of this bikini league.

im not very fond of the skill level present in the wnba, and if those players are supposed to be the best of the women in america, then this is going to be pretty cringe worthy to watch.

I don't know about you, but as a future father, I would want my daughters to end up as attractive wife material to a potential husband after their contribution to a sport. Turning into a massive she-hulk is not my idea of marriageable material.
Let's agree to disagree and put it down to cultural differences.
I'm willing to bet Sharapova's shoulders are at least twice as broad as yours, she's also 6.2 (6.7 on high heels). Both horse-like, like most women in sports. Don't try to turn sports arena into a beauty pageant, almost always it's either this or that.
I find tall girls very attractive and I love basketball. So if these gals can play for real, then I will definitely tune in for a match once in a while!
Why this will be better than the WNBA.... If you want to watch a game PURELY for your enjoyment of seeing the highest level of achievement and competition facing off with eachother... you watch the NBA. Men>Women at physical sports. Fact. There is no if/and/but its fact. If you put the worst NBA team against the best WNBA team, it would not be close.
Now, if you want to watch something strictly because it is eye candy/humorous/enjoyable for COMPLETELY different reasons, you will watch the Bikini Basketball league...
WNBA is the lesser of both worlds... and people dont understand why this will crush it in viewer count?
Same reason people watch Major league baseball, and the minor leagues get no attention... people want to watch the best. NOBODY says... i wanna see some completely above average...anything.
Yes this is sad/sexist/blahblahblah but just approach it logically and it makes more sense.... is it sad that this is more interesting than the WNBA? Yes. But what can they do? Maybe the ones striving for equality should wake up that being in the WNBA DOES NOT equal being in the NBA... if you want equality let the women try out for the NBA and let the best players play.

Dude I would marry Serena Williams in a heart beat. She's fabulously wealthy for one, second you *know* she has stamina, and she is an ideal aspect of beauty in a utilitarian fashion (which, when it comes right done to it has more philosophical value to it than the prevailing trends of beauty for any era).
Dude, Serena is way hotter than Maria. It's actually hilarious that you compare them side by side and actually consider Maria somehow less disgustingly ripped. I mean she has the little head of a 12 year old on the torso of a male high school track star. Them shoulders o_O
Regarding the logo ripoff, I can't help but think of Team Zebra Lightning. Although this is even lazier.

It's sad that we can't simply respect athletic talent in women, and that the ability they have only matters if they have a hot body as a result. Think of how famous the U.S. beach volleyball team is. I'm willing to bet that they'd be just as (relatively) obscure as incredible women's track athletes if they weren't wearing swimsuits

Yeah, they still live in a bygone era where anything remotely sexual is exploitation and oppression of women. Yes, in less developed parts of the world it is a real threat, but in America in 2012? Really? Really?
