This is a tragic event. Let's not derail the thread with a gun control debate. Posts from page 9 onward will be moderated for steering the discussion towards gun control.

What about the daily deaths for disease, famine, or war, etc. Not sure why Americans focus so hard on one 'random' kidnapping case every month when literally thousands are being abducted. Again not trying to being unsympathetic(My thoughts and prayers go to the family of those affected) to the events that took place last night/this early morning. I just wish Americans would be more aware of the big picture. I'll refer now to a quote that Stalin was given credit for even though he didn't actually make it. 'The death of one is a tragedy, the death of a million is a statistic.' Despite this being unappropriate I was thinking the same yesterday. Threads about such incidents have been a lot here and especially now with the warning about gun law discussion it seems the only point of it is a whole lot of RIP posts and no real discussion. I can understand it if someone personally involved in such news posts it but this is a global forum and it just seems to be a randomly picked bad news article out of all the fucked up shit that happens all over the world every day. But in the end you don't have to read these threads if you are not interested in them and thats it. Why don't you open a topic discussing the big pictures that concern all mankind? I was thinking about doing that yesterday but decided I was way too lazy to make a nice OP, so why don't you do it? -.- Also, RIP ![]()

But here's the scary part. Once a new social script is written, other would-be school shooters no longer have to base their actions on television or film. In other words, once the perfect social script is written, all you have to do is follow that. It gets to be the worst when, instead of basing their plans around movies, they simply base them on other school shootings. It becomes an unbreakable cycle of ever increasing violence and premeditation. It essentially works like a pyramid: each attack takes elements from the previous attacks and applies them to future attacks. In a way, the shootings evolve over time. Where before, these scripts were few and far between, now they are so prevalent, you don't even have to do much research to hatch the perfect mass-murder plot--all you have to do is turn on the news. By this point, hundreds of different methods have been devised; all you have to do is pick your favorite. The media perpetuates these social scripts in the most volatile and dangerous way possible. They literally enable other spree-killers to enact plans with wider births and more catastrophic results. It's sad. So very, very sad.

Today's society would benefit from an unselfish, non violent, and caring man, but we are still animilistic. We are chimps with more developed brains. Tragedies like this will continue to happen, despite how advanced we become. I mean seriously, how many wars have been fought and will continue to be fought in humanities history? I'm sure this guy will just be dismissed for being a nutcase, but there are mindless killings all over the world everyday. Wow I haven't heard that but I have been thinking it for a long time, can you give source?

I just talked to my friend who was there via phone, and, as it turns out, he was actually in that theater with his family originally. They asked another family to move over or something, but then decided they should just go to the theater next door where there was more space. He said his mind is just stuck on a few things. A) That other family. B) His dad carries a gun in a shoulder holster and there probably would have been a gun f ight if they had been there still. He's just lost between feeling lucky, freaked out, bad for the other family and thinking maybe they could have done something (his dad) if they had stayed there. But all things considered he seems to be doing pretty good. Talk about crazy.

Looks like he was prepared for that scenario though, with the body armor

That really is something to think about, that they were in the theater but left to go to the other theater, but I still think they should count themselves lucky, whether the guy's dad was packing heat or not. Between the tear gas, and the perp's body armor, it may have been difficult to do much good. Though my heart goes out to that family, and all the other people that were in the theater.

If it turns out that this maniac shot up a theatre because 'Obamacare is ruining the country,' or something, then it would be terrorism. Of course, I learned that definition when I was 14, so it could be inaccurate. Domestic Terrorism - terrorism practiced in your own country against your own people; "the 1995 bombing of a federal building in Oklahoma City was an instance of domestic terrorism" Under current United States law, set forth in the USA PATRIOT Act, acts of domestic terrorism are those which: "(A) involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State; (B) appear to be intended— (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and (C) occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States. This guy had bombs/etc I would consider this Domestic Terrorism.
