This is a tragic event. Let's not derail the thread with a gun control debate. Posts from page 9 onward will be moderated for steering the discussion towards gun control. |

How does a civilian get a rifle and tear gas in the US? Is it something anyone can buy at a gun store? Rifle sure. Tear gas no (afaik). Has it actually been confirmed as tear gas, because normal smoke grenades would be disorientating and dangerous in the confined area, and you can get them for paintball etc. Also you can mock up almost as effective and easily deployable irritant gases yourself with some basic knowledge and over the counter chemicals, given that he had bombmaking shit i wouldnt be surprised if they were home made. Couple of chemicals in the right proportions and a improvised fuse youve got a smoke bomb, add an irritant like conc. wasabi powder, youve got tear gas (equivilent)

Not sure why Americans focus so hard on one 'random' kidnapping case every month when literally thousands are being abducted.
Again not trying to being unsympathetic(My thoughts and prayers go to the family of those affected) to the events that took place last night/this early morning. I just wish Americans would be more aware of the big picture. I'll refer now to a quote that Stalin was given credit for even though he didn't actually make it. 'The death of one is a tragedy, the death of a million is a statistic.'
The thing about disease, famine, and car crashes is that everybody involved is innocent. In war, both sides are fighting for what they believe in.
But here, we have a group of innocent victims who simply showed up to watch a movie and we can clearly see who the bad guy in the story was. There's absolutely no fucking reason to go to a movie theatre and kill random people. Things like car crashes are just going to happen.. not saying that's okay as I was a witness to a motorcycle accident that resulted in a death a while back and it hit me hard. But with a shooting, there's an intent behind it. And that's something we will never understand.

If by trickier you mean you have to walk outside the gunshow so that the guy can show you his illegal stash in his trunk for sale, than yes, a bit trickier. Having gone to gun shows in Ohio growing up, I can tell you it was commonplace for vendors to offer hand grenades, tear gas, and armor piercing rounds, given one is willing to fudge the rules a bit. It really is that easy. There's -nothing- illegal about "armor piercing" rounds. That basically often just means it has a steel core instead of a lead one. Leading me to think the rest of your statement is incorrect too.

This is hardly an appropriate time/place to bring up that debate. If one person dies it is a tragedy. Period.

Theres a difference between intentional killing and accidental mishaps/natural causes. Car crashes aren't intentional, they happen. Shootings/murders like this are much worse.

It's not really a debate, he's just bringing up his opinion...
155,000 people (noted in 2005, probably went up) die everyday... I mean, like the quote mentioned, it's a statistic where this is a tragedy because its a few.

There is nothing unique or new about your post. People have said this 100 times before and I don't see why you bother. This thread isn't discussing the deaths of car crashes or 3rd world countries.
I honestly think this almost exact post has been made on TL at least 100 times.

This "argument" or "point of view" or whatever you wanna call it always comes up. "Think about the kids in Africa dying everyday, we don't think about them" etc.. Thing is, this is such an unusual event, that's why it gets so much press and exposure, it's so shocking to occur you can't help but to be curious of the individual capable of doing this.

Booby trap update: Several bottles of potentially explosive liquid spread around the apartment, and several other probably explosive devices, connected by wires.
[EDIT] Apparently they are 2-liter soda bottles with their contents replaced.

I wonder what he had his PhD in, seems like a pretty elaborate thing to set up. : P That being said, google can usually give you the answers to set anything up.

Wow, so. I live in Denver (borders Aurora - the theater is still only 10-15 minutes from me) and I woke up to this news. At first I was just mad because that's what happens to me when I'm in pain. Then I started to worry about my friends because last night I was going to go out to see the movie with them, but didn't because money is too tight right now.
So I texted both of them (since it was 7am and I w as telling myself that the odds are pretty low and they probably didn't go to that theater - don't want to wake them with my being a worry-wart) and heard back from one that he didn't end up going to see the movie, but that the other did. So I thought, okay, that's one accounted for, one more to go.
It took about three hours but I finally heard back from the other friend. As it turns out, he was there, in the theater next door. Says he saw and heard it happen. And that he's a little freaked, but alive.
I don't even know what to say, I'm kinda shocked and also just really glad, and feeling lucky and grateful that he's okay. But the more overriding feeling is just.. well I can't really describe it better than a perpetual "wow" that I can't seem to get over just yet. Sharing it here will probably help some
I'm going to go hang out with him and our other friend (who didn't end up going) later today, and just be absolutely smitten that we can still do that.

all jokes aside, you really dodged a bullet. I almost feel like that movie Final Destination where you were going to go, but something stopped you (in this case the cash) but obviously there was no premonition so you're all goooood

Calm down -.- Being emotional is completely fine, and it's a tragedy but he voiced his opinion on a public forum, acting like that isn't helping anything (note all of the other responses explaining the difference)

What a tragedy. Seriously don't know what compels people to commit such horrid acts.
