I guess it puts a face on the inhumanity of the event.. It just seems.. invasive. I mean, it's not a diary, it's a twitter account. She has 3.5k followers, and the person in that convo with her posted about her this morning and was re-tweeted hundreds of times. She puts a human face on the situation when right now all we have are vague, frustrating details. Yeah, I thought about my post on the way to the store and you're right, I pretty much agree. It still leaves me feeling a bit bitter. Probably just misplaced anger over the futility of the massacre.

The way terrorism was defined in school is an act of violence for a socio-political cause. It isn't truly terrorism yet because we don't know why he did it. If it turns out that this maniac shot up a theatre because 'Obamacare is ruining the country,' or something, then it would be terrorism. Of course, I learned that definition when I was 14, so it could be inaccurate. Domestic Terrorism - terrorism practiced in your own country against your own people; "the 1995 bombing of a federal building in Oklahoma City was an instance of domestic terrorism" Under current United States law, set forth in the USA PATRIOT Act, acts of domestic terrorism are those which: "(A) involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State; (B) appear to be intended— (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and (C) occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States. This guy had bombs/etc I would consider this Domestic Terrorism. If the patriot act had ONLY mentioned political motivation while defining domestic terrorism, that seems like it would put a huge burden of proof on anyone who acts under that authority. Lawsuits claiming "I wasn't politically motivated, you had no right to wiretap me" etc... I'm not a legal professional, just my own opinion. Despite what that law says, I think political motivation is the commonly accepted 'threshold' between mass murderer and terrorist. That being said, I don't find 'mass murderer' to be any less of a crime than 'domestic terrorist'.

There were early (vague) reports of a second shooter, but that was soon dismissed. The (supposedly) lone shooter is in custody, he was standing by his car in the theater parking lot iirc. He pointed the police toward his booby-trapped apartment.

What about the daily deaths for disease, famine, or war, etc. Not sure why Americans focus so hard on one 'random' kidnapping case every month when literally thousands are being abducted. Again not trying to being unsympathetic(My thoughts and prayers go to the family of those affected) to the events that took place last night/this early morning. I just wish Americans would be more aware of the big picture. I'll refer now to a quote that Stalin was given credit for even though he didn't actually make it. 'The death of one is a tragedy, the death of a million is a statistic.' I am thinking in a similar way but not harsh as yours. I said it on previous pages, this is like a regular day in middle-east, suicide bombs, cross-fire etc... And the death numbers are a lot higher. But again, the attention and pain is naturally more if it's closer to you. So to summarize, it is very sad that bigger mass killings don't get enough attention and coverage around the world. But as a person, who witnessed and was very close to a suicide/car bombing (HSBC Bank in Istanbul) I really understand these people and how it feels when it's happening in your town.

He's different from this guy because he is condemning one twisted individual guilty of mass murder to die, not dozens of innocent moviegoers to die. I'd really rather not pay for this guy to spend 75 years in maximum security prison, unless the entire stint was done in solitary confinement with just enough food/drink to keep him alive. It is times like these that I wish there were more severe punishments than the death penalty...like continuous torture until death. Thankfully more compassionate people than me are in charge of these things and torture is illegal in the U.S., but still. Death will be a merciful end to this man.
