This is a tragic event. Let's not derail the thread with a gun control debate. Posts from page 9 onward will be moderated for steering the discussion towards gun control. |

ter·ror·ism/ˈterəˌrizəm/ Noun: The use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims
For this to qualify specifically for terrorism there would have to be some sort of "meaning" or agenda behind it. Beyond just killing people. Nutjob, definitely. Terrorist? we'll see. Probably not.

It uses fear to accomplish a specific goal. ATM we don't know what this sick ****ers goal was, so he's just a 'mass murderer.'

This is horrendous, I've lived in Aurora for the past 8 years and though we do have some issues with violence in the past (Aurora Hills Mall incident a few years ago, plus a lot of unreported violence on Colfax), but this is just abominable. My heart goes out to the families of the lost and wounded.

Dare I ask ...
How does a civilian get a rifle and tear gas in the US? Is it something anyone can buy at a gun store?

I'm guessing the gas was stolen from military or police stocks or something like that.
Is it confirmed to be tear gas? because that would be a _lot_ harder to get a hold of than say a regular smoke cannister for example. I know many people who have stolen a few of those from the time they were in the military.

If by trickier you mean you have to walk outside the gunshow so that the guy can show you his illegal stash in his trunk for sale, than yes, a bit trickier. Having gone to gun shows in Ohio growing up, I can tell you it was commonplace for vendors to offer hand grenades, tear gas, and armor piercing rounds, given one is willing to fudge the rules a bit. It really is that easy.

Please don't think me unsympathetic, but not sure why people are so upset about 10 people dying at the movie theater when 100+ people EVERY DAY in car crashes. What about the daily deaths for disease, famine, or war, etc.
Not sure why Americans focus so hard on one 'random' kidnapping case every month when literally thousands are being abducted.
Again not trying to being unsympathetic(My thoughts and prayers go to the family of those affected) to the events that took place last night/this early morning. I just wish Americans would be more aware of the big picture. I'll refer now to a quote that Stalin was given credit for even though he didn't actually make it. 'The death of one is a tragedy, the death of a million is a statistic.'

Oh I know, if you detected any ire I apologize, I only want to make it clear to our European and foreign brethren that obtaining these sorts of weapons in the US is incredibly easier than it should be.

Probably because cars don't pull guns in crowded theaters. There's a thing called "intent". Most car crashes are not intentional.

People can kid themselves about things like car crashes. "I'm a good driver so I'll be safe on the roads." and so on. There is no kidding yourself that you can predict and avoid a madman going on a random killing spree.

Funny you brought that up because I was having a conversation with someone last night about the "fear" complex of it. What if YOU were there, even though you have more of a chance of dying from a coconut falling on your head.
To be frank, I wish people cared more about the thousands of people who die a day due to starvation.
But that's offtopic, I feel sympathy but I won't stop going to movie's because of this.
