I only followed this case starting with the trial but was there a lead investigator before Chris Serino?
Serino was the investigator starting the moment Zimmerman walked into the Police Station, the night of the incident. He interviewed him, conducted the walk through the next day, everything.
From what I understand, the case was dropped initially because they just couldn't find anything to really pin Zimmerman on. The media picked it up and turned it into a race war. At least that's how this thread has made it seem, which is corroborated by what I've seen in the news... ahem... Nancy Grace... ahem.
All these people who never followed the news, but put out there statements on twitter need a reality check.
She was the same way after the Casey Anthony trial. Had a bunch of angry mothers irrationaly shouting their heads off and she was spreading all this stuff about the "baby killer" that they frankly never proved in court. I've never trusted media, for precisely these reasons.
@realDonaldTrump Zimmerman is no angel but the lack of evidence and the concept of self-defense, especially in Florida law, gave the jury little other choice
Or maybe because Donald Trump is a fellow racist like Zimmerman? + Show Spoiler +

Zimmerman shot Martin with a gun. Because there was no prior intent (probably) and it was in self defense (almost certainly), it's reasonable that he did not intend to kill Martin. This sounds like an open and shut manslaughter conviction- though if testimony had uncovered intent, it could have been murder.
You can get convicted of manslaughter for building a house incautiously if it results in the house falling and killing someone inside. No matter how little you wanted that person to die or how indirectly your actions led to their death, if you kill someone, you at LEAST get manslaughter.
I don't understand how Zimmerman could possibly walk completely free from this. It does not seem consistent with justice as I understand it.
if you assume its not self defense then of course you cant understand it. the jury found it was self defense.
I don't understand how he says "was in self defense (almost certainly)" then goes onto imply that it wasn't self defense :s.
dAPhREAk, thank you for a brilliantly well-maintained thread that served as a vehicle of discussion for such an important topic. Major feels for having to read every single post in here, I'm surprised your brain hasn't melted honestly.

sarcasm if you didn't catch it.
Without the spoiler tag that's not really how you do sarcasm on the internet We can't see your face or tone, this could have been taken at face value without a hint (other than checking your position from previous post). Another poster was banned at one point for a probable sarcastic comment.
I know many people disagree with the verdict. I personally think it is weird how a person can get away with murder. But, due to Floridas' laws, Zimmerman acted within his legal boundaries during the altercation--even if he may have started it.
Overall, I think this case shows that Stand Your Ground may need to be changed or repealed in order to prevent atrocities like this from happening again.
Would it change your opinion if you were, at some point, educated to the fact that Stand Your Ground had not a fucking thing to do with this case ?
The funniest part was that everyone who was with the protest for "Justice for Trayvon" kept complaining about Stand Your Ground. It's like they just ignored and tuned out the entire case

Can I ask you to elaborate and provide a source? Because I do believe that Zimmerman was acquitted because he acted in self-defense in accordance to Stand Your Ground. I also believe that the law should be modified in order to prevent possible abuses of Stand Your Ground such as potentially provoking an altercation and then killing the other individual in "self-defense."

I happen to think it had to do with Trayvon matching the description of the suspects in the burglaries that had been reported in the neighborhood.
I would really love for someone to define "profiling" because I see it thrown around EVERYWHERE. Incidentally, I see a BIG difference between thinking someone is suspicious because they match a description of specific wanted perpetrators of crime in the immediate area as opposed to hearing news stories across the country that black people commit crime and therefore thinking the next black guy you see is suspicious. I would agree that the latter would be profiling, but definitely not the former.

Stand your ground defense was waived way back. Just google "zimmerman stand your ground waived."

I know O'Mara was pretty confident in his post-verdict press conference that civil trials would end abruptly. That might be the basis for his confidence.
Heard the news on TV several hours ago. I was honestly surprised, mostly because I figured that he wouldn't get 2nd degree but the jurors might consider that someone lost his life thus Zimmerman needs some punishment and would go with manslaughter. I have to say that I'm still rather sad that Trayvon lost his life and when I consider it from that perspective, it disappoints me that Zimmerman is walking free with no punishment however since they went to court and he was found not guilty, that that's the way it should be. Wonder if we'll see riots over the next couple of days.
PS those tweets from celebrities are really sad, same with the people that don't know much about the case and still repeat the same stuff over and over(stalked, stand your ground law, etc...)
I do want to thank dAPhREAk for maintaing such a good thread. My #1 source for information and to keep up to date and thanks to everyone else for the good discussion. I feel like I've learned a lot about this case
